Abstract: A torque sensing system, a torque sensor, a method for determining an amount of torque, and a steering system are provided. The method includes generating a first output signal utilizing a first plurality of piezo-electric transducers disposed between a first plurality of tooth portions of a first hub portion and a second plurality of tooth portions of a second hub portion when the first hub portion is rotated in a first direction relative to the second hub portion. The transducers are electrically coupled in series with one another. The method further includes filtering the first output signal to obtain a first filtered signal and amplifying the first filtered signal to obtain a first amplified signal. The method further includes determining a first torque value indicative of a first amount of torque applied to an input shaft based on the first amplified signal.

  • Patent number: 8348608
Abstract: A rotor of a turbomachine includes a rotor drum located at a central axis and a plurality of buckets secured to the rotor drum. A rotor shell extends between axially adjacent buckets of the plurality of buckets and is secured to and supported by the plurality of buckets defining a cooling passage between the rotor drum and the rotor shell. A low pressure sink is located at an upstream end of the rotor receptive of a coolant flow through the cooling passage. A method of cooling a rotor of a steam turbine includes locating a rotor shell radially outboard of a rotor drum defining a cooling passage therebetween. A flow of steam is urged from a downstream portion of the steam turbine through the cooling passage toward a low pressure sink located at an upstream end of the steam turbine thereby cooling the rotor.

  • Patent number: 8352448
Abstract: A process is disclosed by which data is securely deleted in a transactionally consistent manner. This may be accomplished by committing a preparation transaction for a data object within a system managing the data object in order to return the system to an initial condition if necessary, attempting to commit an execution transaction with the data object only after committing the preparation transaction, and securely deleting any portion of the data object necessary to return the system to the initial condition if committing the execution transaction fails and to change the system to a completed condition only if committing the execution transaction succeeds. In a delete or move transaction an existing backup object may be assigned a new logically deleted state such that if the delete or move transaction fails, the data will be made accessible again.

  • Patent number: 8349422
Abstract: The invention relates to a Flexible Intermediate Bulk Container (FIBC) having a body made of flexible woven fabric, and integral handling devices, wherein the fabric is woven from opaque oriented polyethylene terephthalate (PET) strips having a density of from 500 to 1300 kg/m3 and a tensile strength of at least 250 MPa. Advantages of said FIBC include directly printability with the usual type of inks, giving excellent contrast and good adhesion, without pre-treatment like a corona- or flame-treatment. The FIBC based on the PET fabric also shows higher gloss; better UV resistance; better mechanical properties, like high tensile strength and creep resistance; favorable abrasion resistance; and higher temperature resistance than a conventional big bag based on polypropylene strips. The invention further relates to such a FIBC based on stress-whitened PET tapes obtained by a special drawing process.

  • Patent number: 8352372
Abstract: A software conditional access system (CAS) for media services provided to a Media Distribution Device, such as a set top box (STB), is disclosed. The STB may be connected to a Media Delivery Service Provider via a broadband connection. Over the broadband connection, a CAS application may be downloaded to the STB, maintained and dynamically updated. Because the CAS is implemented by software on the STB, it is inexpensive to install, maintain and update. When a user desires to purchase media services through the STB, a request, with identifying information, is sent to the Media Delivery Service Provider via the broadband connection. The service provider cross-references the identifying information with a user's account to determine whether to allow the user to view the media service requested. If the service provider determines to allow the user to view the media service, the user's account (typically maintained by the service provider) is charged and a key is downloaded via the broadband connection to the STB.
