Abstract: An apparatus and method of predicting vehicle breakdown and operability includes monitoring at a monitoring station on-board systems parameter data transmitted from a vehicle from a remote location; determining whether any of the monitored data is out of a predetermined range; calculating trends for monitored data determined to be out of range; identifying any system fault; and predicting what vehicle system(s) must be corrected to avoid vehicle failure and when such system(s) are likely to fail unless corrected.

Abstract: An apparatus (11) for controlling the peak pressure in the combustion chamber (46) of a turbo-charged diesel locomotive engine (12). A pressure relief valve (56) is disposed in the compressor discharge downstream of the turbo-charger (18). The relief valve (56) is operable to release a selected amount (58) of the compressed air (24) produced by the compressor section (20) of turbo-charger (18). The actuation of valve (56) may be a function of the pressure of the compressed air (24), and/or a manifold air temperature signal (52) and a fuel injection timing signal (40). An actuator (60) attached to valve (56) is responsive to a valve position signal (62) generated by a controller (38) having the appropriate inputs and programmed logic capability.

Abstract: A system and method for controlling operation of an engine during a bog condition is provided. The method allows for monitoring values of a commanded engine RPM signal and of an actual engine RPM signal. The method further allows for determining whether the difference between respective values of the commanded engine RPM signal and the actual engine RPM signal exceeds a predetermined threshold RPM value. An inflection determining step allows for continuing to monitor values of the actual engine RPM signal to determine an inflection RPM point. A varying step allows for controllably varying the commanded engine RPM signal from a predetermined point about the inflection RPM point towards a desired commanded speed value.
Abstract: A method and system for predicting malfunctions in a power inverter having one or more legs connected between first and second voltage buses is provided. Each leg has respective first and second controllable switches coupled in series to one another. The method allows for applying predetermined respective voltages at the first and second buses. The method further allows for selectively actuating the first and second switches between respective conductive or non-conductive states.

Abstract: A method and system for determining degradation of fuel pump performance in a locomotive having an internal combustion engine is provided. The method allows for monitoring a signal indicative of a fuel value delivered by the fuel pump and for adjusting the value of the monitored signal for deviations from an estimated nominal fuel value due to external variables to generate an adjusted fuel value. The method further allows for comparing the value of the adjusted fuel value against the nominal fuel value to determine the performance of the pump.

Abstract: A start assist device for an engine having a means for supplying fuel to fewer than all of the cylinders of the engine at engine cranking speeds that are less than the speed wherein the fuel injection system provides fuel to all of the cylinders. In one embodiment for a diesel locomotive engine, fuel is supplied to two cylinders beginning at 45 RPM to assist the engine starter in achieving an engine cranking speed of 90 RPM wherein the fuel injection system begins to provide fuel to all of the cylinders.
Abstract: A system and method for controlling a turbocharged compression-ignition engine having an intercooling system that uses a predetermined coolant fluid is provided. The engine is configured to receive a predetermined combustion-supporting fluid into a plurality of cylinders through a respective intake manifold. The method allows for detecting a full or high load engine condition using the amount of fuel injected into a cylinder per cylinder cycle and/or throttle notch position. The method also allows for sensing a predetermined parameter indicative of a respective ambient condition. The method further allows for selecting a desired value of a predetermined operational parameter that influences peak pressures developed within the cylinders. The desired value being selected based on the value of the parameter indicative of the ambient condition. A comparing step allows for comparing an actual value of the operational parameter against the desired value of that operational parameter.
Abstract: A fuel injection timing control system for diesel engines operating at high altitude includes a barometric sensor coupled to an altitude timing controller, and a throttle position sensor coupled to the engine and the altitude timing controller. The altitude timing controller adjusts fuel injection timing in response to the sensed pressure and sensed throttle position by advancing or retarding fuel injection timing by predetermined values as barometric pressure and/or throttle position changes. The predetermined values are selected to reduce exhaust emissions and/or increase engine efficiency and performance under various barometric pressure conditions so that the engine may be operated continually and optimally under various barometric conditions.
Abstract: A method and system for controlling a compression ignition engine in railroad locomotives and other land or marine-based large propulsion or power generation equipment operable in a selected one of a plurality of engine throttle notches is provided. Each throttle notch is indicative of a respective load condition of the engine. The engine has an intercooling system using a predetermined cooling fluid and the engine is configured to receive a predetermined combustion-supporting fluid (e.g., air) into a plurality of cylinders through respective intake manifolds. The method allows for sensing the selected throttle notch, and for selectively actuating the intercooling system to adjust a predetermined operational parameter (e.g., intake manifold air temperature) based on the sensed throttle notch and/or environmental conditions.

Abstract: A method for extending the interval between lubricant changes in an internal combustion engine. A small volume of lubricant is removed from the engine at periodic intervals and combusted within the engine. Clean replacement lubricant is provided to replace the portion of the lubricant removed from the engine. A connection is provided between the lubricating circuit and the fuel supply system. The flow of lubricant through the connection may be controlled in response to the measurement of a quality perimeter of the lubricant. Replacement lubricant may be provided to the engine from an onboard storage tank.
Abstract: An apparatus and method for clearing a railroad track of contaminants, such as snow, including a control system for providing control signals to a compressed air system mounted on a locomotive based on a plurality of predetermined conditions. A learning system evaluates the effects of railroad track clearing and provides input for activating the railroad track clearing system.

Abstract: A sanitary system for a locomotive wherein the treatment tank is protected from freezing by the use of the heat available in the exhaust air removed from the toilet compartment. A sealed and insulated compartment is formed around the treatment tank, and a vent is connected between the toilet room and the insulated compartment. A suction line located at an opposed position in the insulated compartment is used to direct the flow of air from the toilet room, through the insulated compartment around the treatment tank, to the locomotive exterior. By eliminating the need for heat tracing of the treatment tank, this invention reduces the cost and energy usage of the locomotive sanitary system.

Abstract: A computer-based method and system for predicting impending failures in a system, such as a locomotive, aircraft, power plant, etc., having a plurality of subsystems is provided. The method allows for storing log data indicative of respective incidents or events that may occur as each of the subsystems is operative. A detecting step allows for detecting predetermined trend patterns in the log incident data. A mapping step allows for mapping each detected trend pattern into a respective prediction of an impending failure of a respective one of the subsystems of the locomotive, and an informing or outputting step allows for informing a respective user of the failure prediction so as to allow the user to take corrective action before the predicted failure occurs.
