    Abstract: In an apparatus for applying ink patterns on oriented strand boards, the boards are serially moved closely adjacent to and past ink jets, and ink is deposited on the boards. To deposit the ink accurately on the boards they are advanced by pinch and drive rollers which also ensure that the boards are flat as they move past the jets. Detectors are used to detect boards which cannot be flattened or are irregular in shape and in such a case the ink jets are moved to avoid impact by an irregular board. During printing, the panels and the ink jets are about 0.0625 inches to about 0.125 inches apart, and the panels are moved at a rate of about 150 ft/minute to 600 ft/minute.

Also provided is a method for making a calcium phosphate colorant in which aluminum hydroxide is mixed with a calcium phosphate slurry to deposit aluminum hydroxide onto the calcium phosphate particles contained within the slurry.

The improved binder system used in the production of the board surface layers according to this invention involves contacting wood pieces with a binder composition comprised of a curable powdery aldehyde resin and a curable isocyanate resin in the substantial absence of free water to provide a composite mixture that can be formed into a surface layer for assembly and lamination together with other wood and resin composite layers.

    Abstract: Processes for making high quality PCC compositions, and the resulting PCC products thereof. A precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) composition is prepared by a process comprising the step of wet media mill grinding an aqueous slurry of PCC made by carbonation of lime milk, with the grinding being done at a low solids content in a plurality of separate grinding stages, which can done while essentially free of the presence of organic dispersant. After the multi-stage wet grinding step, the ground PCC slurry is partially dewatered in the presence of an organic dispersant in a solid bowl centrifuge. Then, the partially dewatered PCC slurry is subjected, in the presence of an organic dispersant, to fluid shearing forces created in a rotor/stator type mixer. While these three steps are advantageously used together within a single PCC process flow for optimal effect, the individual steps also can be incorporated singly or in lesser combinations thereof into different PCC manufacturing schemes to beneficial effect.

    Abstract: There is provided a method of adhering dye to a silica. The method comprises providing a silica slurry which includes a plurality of silica particles, depositing alum in the pores of the silica particles, reacting a base with the alum to convert the alum into aluminum hydroxide resulting in treated silica particles. The treated silica particles are then filtered and washed. Thereafter, a dye is mixed with the treated silica particles. The resultant dyed silica product is resistant to dye migration.
