Abstract: A method of and apparatus for treating liquids flowing in a thin film around a source of wave energy to directly expose the liquid to the wave energy, preferably generated in whole or part by an electrical arc between carbon electrodes. In addition to the wave energy generated by the electrical arc, energy generated by cavitation of the flowing liquid may be used in treating the liquid.
Abstract: The invention relates to a light prosthesis as a purely optical substitute for a missing limb, including a shaped body (1) for replacing the missing limb as naturally as possible and a socket (2) for connecting the prosthesis to the stump (3) of the missing limb. In order to provide such a prosthesis for temporary or permanent use without having to fulfill any functionality, thus being suitable also for elderly patients, it is contemplated that the shaped body (1) is made of a light synthetic material, and that the periphery of the socket (2) for connecting the prosthesis to the stump (3) is variable in a manner known per se. The shaped body (1) may, in particular, also be made of an elastic, air-tight synthetic material (9) and include at least one valve (10) for inflating the shaped body (1).

Abstract: The present invention is a natural, cell-free tissue replacement that does not require difficult or extensive preparation made by washing tissue replacement in a solution including one or more sulfobetaines and an anionic surface-active detergent and washing the tissue replacement in serial solutions of the buffered salt to remove excess detergent. The natural, cell-free tissue replacement may be a nerve graft that supports axonal regeneration, guides the axons toward the distal nerve end and/or is immunologically tolerated. Other forms of the invention are a composition and kit prepared by the method of making a native, cell-free tissue replacement. The present invention may be modified for use in diagnostic, therapeutic, and prophylactic applications.

Abstract: A method and system to acquire, digitize, store, and deliver live content, such as music, to an end user via a network. The system can capture live content directly into a portable audio format which can be encoded at various levels of resolution into a file. The encoded file can then be transported over a network to a network distributor who can then sell the encoded file to end users. The system can also insert a digital watermark into each user file which can contain the user information, the copyright information, and a unique serial number for future verification and copy protection. The digital watermark can survive file or format conversion.
Abstract: The present invention includes composition and methods for making and using a combinatorial library having two or more beads, wherein attached to each bead is a unique nucleic acid aptamer that have disposed thereon a unique sequence. The library aptamers may be attached covalently to the one or more beads, which may be polystyrene beads. The aptamers may include phosphorothioate, phosphorodithioate and/or methylphosphonate linkages and may be single or double stranded DNA, RNA or even PNAs.

Abstract: The present invention provides an electrical cable having two or more conductors, one or more multistrip insulators separating the two or more conductors from one another, and a protective cover formed around the two or more conductors and one or more multistrip insulators. The multistrip insulator may include one or more dielectric strips, one or more protective strips or a combination thereof. The present invention also provides a method for manufacturing an electrical cable by providing two or more conductors, separating the two or more conductors from one another using one or more multistrip insulators, and forming a protective cover around the two or more conductors and one or more multistrip insulators.
Abstract: A random combinatorial selection method is disclosed for the construction of oligonucleotide aptamers in which nuclease resistance is conferred by the inclusion of modified nucleotides. The modified nucleotides are incorporated during PCR amplification to form achiral modified oligonucleotides. Thio-substituted aptamers are provided that bind tightly to the nuclear factor for human IL6 (NF-IL6).

Abstract: The present invention provides a system, method and apparatus for a redundant prime mover system to drive a machine having an engine coupled to the machine, and a motor/generator coupled to the machine and an electrical network connection. The controller operates the engine and the motor/generator in three or four operating modes. The first operating mode drives the machine with the engine. The second operating mode drives the machine with the motor/generator. The third operating mode drives the machine and the motor/generator with the engine such that the motor/generator generates electricity for delivery to the electrical network connection. Alternatively, the third operating mode drives the machine with both the engine and the motor/generator. This alternate operating mode can also be included as a fourth operating mode.
Abstract: A method and system is provided for producing an image on one or more surfaces of a wood or wood composite substrate by applying a receptor coat to at least the one or more surfaces of the substrate, transferring the image to the receptor coat using a variety of image transfer processes and applying a topcoat to the image and receptor coat. The system implements the above method using a series of stations and includes a series of platens connected together by a chain and a set of rollers that allow the substrate to travel through the stations on the platens. The resulting wood or wood composite product includes a substrate, a receptor coat disposed on one or more surfaces of the substrate, an image disposed on or within the one or more surfaces of the receptor coat and a top coat disposed on the image and receptor coat.
