Abstract: A method and apparatus for measuring an apparent depth (1) of a section of an eye (30) are disclosed. Light is focused to a measurement location (15) proximate or within the eye. The measurement location is scanned through the section and upon passing through first and second refractive index interfaces defining the section, a respective reflected light signal is detected, from which apparent positions of the first and second interfaces may be derived. Preferably, a confocal scanning arrangement is employed. Preferably, the section is the aqueous humor (34) of the eye (30). From changes in its refractive index (n) corresponding changes in glucose concentration in the aqueous humor and, in turn, in the bloodstream of a patient may be derived, offering a non-invasive monitoring means for diabetic patients. The apparatus may be a hand-held device, employing microelectromechanical systems.

Abstract: A file storage system can include a file manager that adaptively partitions memory to accommodate the storage of fragmented data information. The fragments, potentially of varying size, can be stored in a volume of memory that is partitioned to include a group of storage segments. In the event that a particular fragment is not sized to efficiently fit in a free storage segment, the segment can be further subdivided to accommodate a fragment. In this way, a segment allotted for storage of data information can be adaptively subdivided into a smaller group of storage sub-segments. These sub-segments and yet potentially smaller storage partitions of the sub-segments can then be used to store additional fragments of a related stream of data. Based on this technique, portions of a logical stream of data information can be stored in the segments that vary in size. Meta data associated with the stored fragments can be used to facilitate reconstruction of a file or data stream.

Abstract: A method, apparatus and computer program product for mapping user conversations is presented. Communications and conversations between a user and people across multiple modes of communication are aggregated to provide an aggregated set of user data. The aggregated set of user data is filtered to provide filtered user data. Additionally, the filtered user data is mapped to determine at least one of social rank, relevance and attention for a user's social network.

Abstract: A system for guaranteeing bandwidth for transmitting data in a network. A path generation engine determines a data paths across a network according to preselected criteria. A scheduling engine determines schedule appointments for data packets to traverse each link in the network including compensation for transmission delays and switch latencies. Scheduling data is communicated to schedule-aware switches and endpoints so that appointment times are reserved for transmission of the scheduled data packets. Real-time transmission of data can be guaranteed in both directions along the transmission path.

Abstract: A system produces certified content by receiving original content acquired from a content acquisition device and receiving a device identity associated with the content acquisition device. The system produces a certification value indicating the original content was acquired from the content acquisition device having the device identity. The system associates the certification value to the original content to produce certified content that can be verified to represent the original content that was acquired from a content acquisition device having the associated device identity while preventing modification to the original content by processing not associated with certification processing. This process is performed in an uninterrupted manner to ensure certified content reflects an accurate device identity. The system can be implemented entirely within a content acquisition device itself, or in a computer system coupled to a content acquisition device.

Abstract: Described are a network and method for performing live migration of a virtual machine (VM) executing at a source site to at least one destination site over an optical network. An application program executes on the VM on behalf of a client system. In the event of a VM migration, a virtual machine turntable control agent coordinates the resource allocation with the VM data transfer. One or more lightpaths are dynamically and securely established through the optical network between the source site and the destination site(s). The VM migration from the source site to multiple destination sites occurs simultaneously, while the application program executes on the VM. After the VM migration, the application resumes at the destination site(s).

Abstract: Computer system and method using a Kautz-like digraph to interconnect computer nodes and having control back channel between nodes. A multinode computing system includes a large plurality of computing nodes interconnected via a Kautz topology having order O, diameter n, and degree k. The order equals (k+1)kn?1; The data interconnections from a node x to a node y in the topology satisfy the relationship y=(?x*k?j) mod O, where 1?j?k; and each x,y pair includes a unidirectional control link from node y to node x to convey flow control and error information from a receiving node y to a transmitting node x.

Abstract: A licensing server source distributes a so-called license configuration file to a client for purposes of enabling operation of a software application installed on a computer. When a user initiates execution of the vendor software for the first time, code associated with the software application accesses the license configuration file for purposes of obtaining authorization (e.g., one or more activation certificates) to operate the software application. Depending on the type of license configuration file forwarded to the respective client, the license configuration file can include either a corresponding activation certificate to operate the software or include an address of a remote source (e.g., address) in which to register and obtain authorization to operate the software application.

Abstract: A program specializer employs input specialized data structures by generating an input specialized definition of a set of data elements, and parsing an application program to identify data element references to data elements in the generated input specialized definitions of data elements. The program specializer replaces or rewrites the identified data element references with the corresponding input specialized definition. The input specialized data elements from the input specialized program are employed in a particular view by generating a mapping of source data types to preferred data types, such that the preferred data types have access advantages over the source data types, and receiving a markup application program having source data types operable to be modified in the input specialized program. A view mapper maps, using the generated mapping, a source data type to a preferred data type, and applies the mapped preferred data type to occurrences of the corresponding source data type.

Abstract: A log collection utility (LCU) operable in a storage area network (SAN) to identify the various types of log files generated in the SAN, compute the location of each of the log files, and collect the log files for consolidation and analysis in a common repository. A designator file enumerates log files for collection. The LCU generates a discovery script for each host, and the hosts generate an identity of each of the log files via execution of the discovery script. The LCU generates a collection script operable to gather the each of the log files. The LCU thus gathers a plurality of log files generated by dissimilar applications and nodes in the SAN via a declarative mechanism that specifies the types of log files via a log file designator, and generates executable scripts that collects the log files in a manner that is agnostic to operating systems, platforms, and directory structures.

Abstract: A system displays a set of content slides on a graphical user interface. The system identifies navigation paths between content slides in the set of content slides, each navigation path indicating a destination content slide to be displayed after a source content slide upon user selection of a navigation choice during a presentation sequence of the content slides. For each identified navigation path, the system displays a visualization of that navigation path on the graphical user interface between the source content slide and the destination content slide associated with that navigation path. The system allows a user of the graphical user interface to alter a navigation path between content slides to change the association of that navigation path between at least one of the source content slide and the destination content slide to modify the presentation sequence of the content slides.

Abstract: An improved radiation detection device measures a broad range of dose rate levels. According to one arrangement, the radiation detection device calculates a radiation value based on, gamma count information representing counts for different energy levels of radiation in a radiation field as well as a radiation intensity indicator value (e.g., photomultiplier tube anode DC current, measured directly by conventional Analog to Digital Converters or indirectly by power or current consumption information indicating how much energy is required to maintain a photomultiplier tube at a constant voltage) that is at least proportional to an amount of overall radiation energy detected in the radiation sample. Based on a combination of the gamma count information and the radiation intensity indicator value, a controller associated with a corresponding radiation detection device can calculate a radiation dose rate associated with the received radiation sample.

Abstract: A reaction chamber enables a reaction between received elemental mercury gas and an oxidizing agent gas. The reaction chamber includes a porous (or permeable) medium through which to pass the elemental mercury gas and the oxidizing agent gas. Passing of the elemental mercury gas and the oxidizing agent gas through the porous medium supports a number of useful functions. For example, the porous medium enhances mixing of the elemental mercury gas with the oxidizing agent gas to enhance a reaction. Also, the porous medium increases an amount of surface area in a reaction chamber on which reactions (e.g., heterogeneous surface reactions) can take place between the elemental mercury gas and the oxidizing agent gas to form oxidized mercury gas. Accordingly, the reaction chamber configured to include a porous medium enhances a conversion of elemental mercury gas into oxidized mercury gas.

Abstract: Described are a Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) network device and method for distributing routing information to a plurality of BGP peers over a network. The BGP network device dynamically calculates a number of groups and a number of BGP peers in each group based on routing information to be distributed. A time interval is specified within which to generate an update message for each BGP peer in a select one of the groups. An update message is generated for each BGP peer in the select group during the time interval. Routes included in the update message for each BGP peer are based on an outbound routing policy for that BGP peer. The update messages are forwarded for transmission to the BGP peers in the select group after the time interval expires.

At least one menu element of an application is selected. An alternate style is assigned to the at least one menu element. The at least one menu elements of the application is displayed, wherein the at least one menu element is presented in the alternate style assigned to the element.

Abstract: A resource manager receives selection of a particular icon from an expandable tree of icons displayed in a first region of a display screen. The selected particular icon represents a corresponding group of resources associated with a storage area network. In response to receiving the selection, the resource manager displays a set of selectable view mode icons in a second region of the display screen. The set of selectable view mode icons enable a user to select different subsets of resources from the corresponding group of resources in the first region for viewing in a table. The table is also displayed in the second region of the display screen. After initially populating the table, the resource manager provides the selectable view mode icons in the second region of the display screen along with the table to enable further selection of different subsets of resources for viewing in the table.

Abstract: A system for backing up and restoring data operates by persistently storing or backing up data from a first medium to a second medium for subsequent access by a user. In one configuration, the backup process is performed at no monetary fee or charge to the user for backup, but only charges for restoration of data. The system receives a request to restore the data and obtains or calculates a restore cost to restore the data. The system identifies a set of restoration parameters associated with the data to be restored and computes the restore cost of the data based on the set of restoration parameters. The system receives an indication that payment of a restore cost has been made to restore the data and in response, performs a restoration operation on the data to restore the data for access by a user.

At the service provider, the system associates the recipient information with the client from which the recipient information was received, and stores the recipient information at the client. Abstract: A power supply system includes a first driver circuit to control a corresponding switching of a first switch device and a second switch device in the power supply system via different drive circuits. To reduce losses and thus improve efficiency of the power supply system, a first driver circuit can be configured to initiate a faster rate of transitioning the first switch device between ON and OFF states than a second driver initiates transitioning of the second switch device between ON and OFF states. To reduce the effects of introducing unwanted ripple voltage on an output signal used to drive a dynamic load, a controller in the power supply system can be configured to initiate shedding or adding of multiple voltage converter phases at the same time when load requirements cross a threshold value.
