  • Patent number: 8260652
Abstract: A method, apparatus and computer program for determining and utilizing a time-expanded decision network is presented. A set of potential system configurations is defined. Next, switching costs are quantified to create a “static network” that captures the difficulty of switching among these configurations. A time-expanded decision network is provided by expanding the static network in time, including chance and decision nodes. Minimum cost paths through the network are evaluated under plausible operating scenarios. The set of initial design configurations are iteratively modified to exploit high-leverage switches and the process is repeated to convergence. Time-expanded decision networks are applicable, but not limited to, the design of systems, products, services and contracts.

  • Patent number: 8249239
Abstract: Request information received by a call handler system specifies multiple acceptable call connection encoding options or formats for communicating with a caller. The call handler system forwards the multiple acceptable call connection encoding options to a called destination. The called destination responds with a selection of a first call connection option from the multiple call connection options. The call handler system selects a second call connection option for providing a ring-back tone to the caller while waiting for the called destination to answer his phone. During the wait, the call handler system provides a ring-back tone to the caller via the second call connection encoding option. Upon detection of the called destination answering his phone, the call handler system discontinues playback of the ring-back tone and notifies the caller to communicate with the called destination via the first call connection encoding option as selected by the called destination.

  • Patent number: 8242759
Abstract: According to one configuration, a multi-phase power supply adjusts a number of active phases based at least in part on a peak current supplied to a dynamic load. For example, a controller associated with the multi-phase power supply can monitor or receive a value indicative of a peak magnitude of current delivered by the multi-phase power supply to a dynamic load. The controller initiates comparison of the value to threshold information. Based at least in part on the comparison, the controller adjusts how many phases of the multi-phase power supply are activated to deliver the current delivered to the dynamic load. Thus, one embodiment herein is directed to controlling a multi-phase power supply based at least in part on a measured parameter such as peak current magnitude.

  • Patent number: 8223637
Abstract: An apparatus and methods are disclosed for enabling quality-of-service and call admission control for wireless telecommunications terminals without first submitting a traffic specification. The illustrative embodiment of the present invention is particularly advantageous for IEEE 802.11e networks because the 802.11e standard, which in its currently-drafted form contains provisions for terminals to submit traffic specifications, might not require 802.11e terminals to submit traffic specifications in the finalized 802.11e standard. Proper call admission control and, consequently, quality-of-service for wireless applications therefore might not be universally available to future 802.11e-compliant terminals unless one or more embodiments of the present invention are deployed.
