Abstract: A method for treating the disease state in mammals caused by mammalian cells involved in the inflammatory response is disclosed. Mammalian cells participating in the inflammatory response are contacted with an inflammatory response mediator which reduces the undesired inflammatory response and is an antioxidant. The inflammatory response mediator may further provide a cellular energy source and be a building block in the cellular synthesis of other cellular components. Compositions for reducing and treating undesired inflammatory response are also disclosed.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to printed substrates having a metallic finish and methods for producing such printed substrates, preferably using an offset lithographic press. The method comprises coating a printing substrate with three coats of ink applied successively as follows: (1) a first coat comprising a solid color corresponding to the final color of the desired printing substrate; (2) a second coat comprising a moire pattern color; and (3) a third coat comprising water pearl.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to a method for removing ink from a substrate containing at least one synthetic polymeric resin which comprises contacting the substrate with an aqueous solution of a glycol ether for a time sufficient, and under conditions effective, to remove the ink, wherein the glycol ether may be represented by Formula (I)R.sub.1 --O--R.sub.2 --OH (I)wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are independently selected from the group consisting of alkyl groups having from 1 to about 8 carbon atoms. This invention also pertains to improved methods for preparing de-inked recycled substrates employing the aqueous solution of glycol ether.

Abstract: Hot melt adhesive compositions containing amine and acid terminated polyamide resins, optionally curable when combined with epoxy resins, wherein the amine component of the polyamide resin contains (i) 1,2-diaminopropane, (ii) a piperazine-containing diamine, and optionally, (iii) polyetherdiamines; the polyamide resins may be acid or amine terminated, and are characterized by having an acid plus amine number of up to 40, preferably up to 30, and more preferably up to 20; the adhesive compositions are useful in a number of applications and have good strength while exhibiting flexibility and low tackiness.

Abstract: A flavor enhancing composition including benzyl benzoate and neryl acetate is provided in accordance with the invention. The flavor enhancing composition can be provided in either solid, i.e. powder, or liquid form and is used to enhance the flavor of mints, gums, candy, oral hygiene products and the like.

Abstract: A method for suspending inclusions in an acidic or alcoholic liquid composition is provided. The method includes the steps of preparing a pre-gel solution including gellan gum in water, providing a liquid composition having inclusions, and incorporating the pre-gel solution into the liquid composition. Alternatively, the liquid composition can be provided without inclusions and the inclusions may be added after the pre-gel solution is incorporated into the liquid composition. Upon standing, the pre-gel solution will cause the inclusions to suspend in the liquid composition. Acidic or alcoholic liquid compositions having suspended particulates or inclusions are also provided.

Abstract: Flavor emulsions prepared by encapsulating a flavoring agent in leucaena gum are disclosed. The flavor emulsions can be used to prepare beverages in accordance with the invention.

Abstract: The invention provides an anti-bacterial oral composition such as mouthrinse which includes a bis-biguanido hexane compound such as chlorhexidine and compounds thereof, certain non-ionic surfactants which are poly(oxyethylene)-poly(oxypropylene) block copolymers having an HLB of between 10 and 30 or an ethoxylated hydrogenated caster oil containing from about 10 to 200 moles of added ethylene oxide and sorbitol in high concentrations. The oral composition is found to increase the activity of the bis-biguanido compound from 25% to 150%.

Abstract: A denture adhesive base composition comprises a substantially anhydrous mixture of a cationic derivatives of guar gum, a mixed Na/Ca salt of methyl vinyl ether-maleic anhydride and sodium carboxymethylcellulose. A denture adhesive composition including this base composition is provided, as well as a method for formulating the novel adhesives of the invention. Upon hydration, the denture adhesives of the invention form denture adhesive compositions exhibiting improved denture holding and adhesive duration properties.

Abstract: An orally administrable sustained-release pharmaceutical tablet having at least two layers, which are directly compressible, is disclosed. The first layer, an immediate-release layer, contains an orally active analgesic and is readily susceptible to disintegration in the stomach. The second layer, a sustained-release layer which is directly compressed onto the first layer, comprises an orally active decongestant admixed with a major amount of a sustained-release agent so as to display increased resistance to disintegration and erosion in the gastro-intestinal tract relative to the first layer.

Abstract: A structure for supporting a product label in connection with a product rack comprised of tubular support members. The present invention provides a planar face which is configured to fit between and among the tubular members which form the rack. This generally rectangular face is used as a backing for labels, such as product labels. The present invention also discloses side walls which extend generally downwardly over a generally concave curve from the rectangular face. The curve of the generally downwardly extending side walls is such that it can snappingly engage the tubular members of the rack. In certain rectangular, square and other similar configurations of the planar face, additional downwardly extending side walls may also be included within the structure. These side walls may or may not engage the tubular members of the rack. A lip structure extending generally perpendicularly outwardly from the lower edges of the side walls is also provided.

Abstract: A method for preparing an edible anion exchange resin delivery system which comprises the steps of coating granules of resin with lecithin. A gelatin frappe is separately prepared and placed into a mixing chamber. The lecithin-coated resin granules are then added to the chamber and mixed together with the frappe. Flavorings can also be added to the mixture and the final blend is then allowed to set-up in a controlled environment for a predetermined period of time.

Abstract: A disposable hollow bulb-shaped applicator has an ointment-permeable soft mesh membrane which covers the bulbous end of the applicator. Resilient walls surround and interconnect both ends of the applicator, and form a chamber for holding ointment therebetween. The applicator has a necked end opposite to the bulbous end which may be attached to a container of ointment. The ointment chamber of the applicator may be filled with ointment by pressurizing the container (e.g. by squeezing) to force ointment from the container into the applicator. A plug is inserted into the necked end of the applicator to prevent the flow of ointment out of the applicator through the necked end. The filled applicator is squeezed to force ointment through the soft mesh membrane and onto the surface which is to be treated by the ointment. The applicator may be discarded after use.

Abstract: The present invention pertains to spray dried spheroidal microcapsules under about 150 microns in diameter which comprise in percentages by weight of the microcapsule composition (a) sucralfate present in an amount from about 1% to about 70%, and (b) a polymer soluble in the gastric fluids present in an amount from about 30% to about 99%. In another embodiment, the invention is directed at a taste masking composition which comprises a therapeutically effective amount of a spray dried spheroidal microcapsule core under about 150 microns in diameter and a matrix over the core wherein the taste masking composition comprises (A) a microcapsule core comprising in percentages by weight of the core composition (a) sucralfate present in an amount from about 1% to about 70%, and (b) a polymer soluble in the gastric fluids present in an amount from about 30% to about 99%; and (B) a matrix over the core comprising in percentages by weight of the matrix composition (a) a bulking agent present in an amount up to about 99.
