  • Patent number: 4990136
Abstract: A suppository applicator for inserting suppositories into body cavities comprises a tubular body having an open end and a closed end. A plunger is slidably disposed in the tubular body for reciprocal movement between a withdrawn position and an extended position and a combined spring is situated between the plunger and the closed end of the applicator to urge the plunger toward its extended position. The tubular body is formed with a longitudinal slot along its side which has a notch that extends from the slot to engage a latch on the plunger and hold the plunger in its withdrawn position. The open end of the tubular body is shaped to stationarily hold a suppository against the withdrawn plunger until the suppository is to be inserted into the body cavity. When the latch is released, the spring pushes the plunger against the suppository to insert the suppository into its desired placement in the body cavity.

  • Patent number: 4937061
Abstract: Continuous production of aluminum hydroxycarbonate gel by continuous reaction of aluminum salt solution with mixed alkaline carbonate and bicarbonate solution under homogeneous conditions in a relatively small reaction vessel, and continuing the reaction in a subsequent reaction vessel under controlled pH. The product gel is separated from the non-aluminum cation containing reaction mixture within less than about 6 hours, whereby formation of poorly soluble addition reaction products such as dihydroxy aluminium sodium carbonate, which contribute undesired non-aluminum cations to the gel product, is reduced. The aluminum salt solution is adjusted in pH by adding to it a portion of the mixed carbonate and bicarbonate solution to obtain a clear solution of pH 3.5 to 4.0. This results in a smooth, creamy gel with less objectionable chalky mouth feel.

  • Patent number: 4929447
Abstract: The present invention is method and composition for protecting an active ingredient and providing controlled release therefor, especially in a chewing gum composition, which includes a high molecular weight polyvinyl acetate blended with a hydrophobic plasticizer which forms a film with the high molecular weight polyvinyl acetate in the absence of an added solvent therefor. The active ingredient, such as the artificial sweetener aspartame, is blended into the encapsulating composition as, for example, by melt blend which can then be cooled to a solid and ground into particulate. The encapsulated active ingredient can then be used in a composition for ingestion by a human in the form of, for example, a chewing gum with extended shelf life and highly controlled release of the active ingredient.
