  • Patent number: 6424639
Abstract: A mobile packet network call is established over a transmission link, extending between a mobile terminal device and a given interworking function. The transmission link connects the mobile terminal device to a wireless communication device over a first interface and further connects the wireless communication device to the given interworking function over a second interface via a wireless link to a base station. The transmission link further comprises a packet mode in which the traffic channel is up and a dormant mode in which the traffic channel is down while the data link layer link and the network layer link are maintained. Network region identifier information is provided to the wireless communication device. The wireless communication device determines when the given interworking function has changed from a first interworking function to a second interworking function by determining when there is a corresponding change in the network region identifier information.

  • Patent number: 6425070
Abstract: The present invention is a novel and improved method and circuit for digital signal processing. One aspect of the invention calls for the use of a variable length instruction set. A portion of the variable length instructions may be stored in adjacent locations within memory space with the beginning and ending of instructions occurring across memory word boundaries. Furthermore, additional aspects of the invention are realized by having instructions contain variable numbers of instruction fragments. Each instruction fragment causes a particular operation, or operations, to be performed allowing multiple operations during each clock cycle. Thus, multiple operations are performed during each clock cycle, reducing the total number of clock cycles necessary to perform a task. The exemplary DSP includes a set of three data buses over which data may be exchanged with a register bank and three data memories.

  • Patent number: 6420999
Abstract: A method and apparatus that allows correlations between a selected parameter and the error in a pseudo range measurement to be exploited. A database is established in which the amount of error estimated for particular pseudo range measurements to a beacon is maintained. Clusters are defined. Each cluster is associated with a range of values for the selected parameter. Pseudo range measurements are then associated with a particular cluster based upon the value of the selected parameter at the time (or proximate to the time) the pseudo range measurement was taken. As more estimates of the pseudo range measurements are made, the size of the clusters (i.e., the range of values of the selected parameter) can be reduced. Due to the correlation between the selected parameter and the errors in the pseudo range measurements, reducing the size of the clusters reduces the variance of the error estimates. The mean value of the error estimates is used to correct the error in future pseudo range measurements.

  • Patent number: 6415148
Abstract: A wireless communication system attempts to acquire service from one of a plurality of possible service provider systems. If service is acquired by a less desirable service provider system, the wireless communication system of the present invention constructs an alternate list of more desirable service provider systems and periodically attempts to acquire service from a more desirable service provider system. The wireless communication system may include a most recently used (MRU) list of recently acquired service provider systems. The MRU list may be used to sort the list of alternate service provider systems so that the alternate list of service provider systems will first list those service provider systems that are also contained in the MRU list. Data entries that are contained in both the alternate scan list and the MRU list are sorted in accordance with the position of the service provider system within the MRU list.

  • Patent number: 6407689
Abstract: A control mechanism that can be used to control a &Sgr;&Dgr; ADC to provide the required level of performance while reducing power consumption. The &Sgr;&Dgr; ADC is designed with multiple stages (i.e., loops or sections), and provides improved performance (e.g., higher dynamic range) as more stages are enabled. The control mechanism selectively enables a sufficient number of stages to provide the required performance and disables remaining stages to conserve power. The control mechanism achieves this by measuring one or more characteristics (e.g., signal level) of the ADC input signal through a &Sgr;&Dgr; ADC that is similar to the &Sgr;&Dgr; ADC on the signal path, comparing the measured characteristic(s) to particular threshold level(s), and controlling the stages such that the desired objectives are achieved. In one implementation, the control circuit includes one or more detector stages, a conditioning circuit, and a signal processor.

  • Patent number: 6407623
Abstract: A bias circuit is described for use in biasing an operational amplifier to maintain a constant transconductance divided by load capacitance (i.e. a constant gm/CL) despite temperature and process variations and despite body effects. In one example, the bias circuit includes a pair of current source devices and a switched capacitor (SC) equivalent resistor circuit for developing an equivalent resistance between the current source devices. The equivalent resistor circuit includes a sampling capacitor. First and second clock inputs are connected to the capacitor providing non-overlapping clock signals at a predetermined sampling frequency to establish a resistance equivalent. By providing an SC equivalent resistor circuit clocked by non-overlapping fixed clock signals, the gm/CL of the bias circuit is maintained substantially constant. Hence, a fixed bandwidth is maintained within the operational amplifier being biased.

  • Patent number: 6381703
Abstract: A system and method for affecting the behavior of the transmitting UART that, in turn, results in an internal state change in the receiving UART. The present invention, upon detecting a PPP packet, flow controls the line, causing the transmitting UART to force a marking condition (that is, all ones) or idle state. This idle state enables the receiving UART to exit sampling mode and receive the remaining incoming data within the PPP packet in byte mode. The receiving UART, when operating in byte mode, automatically accounts for slew.

  • Patent number: 6373436
Abstract: A dual strip antenna that includes first and second conductive strips, each made from a conductive material. The first and second strips are separated by a dielectric substrate having a predetermined thickness. The first strip is electrically connected to the second strip at one end. A coaxial signal feed is coupled to the dual strip antenna. A dual strip antenna can be reduced in overall size by utilizing a periodic mesh patterned conductive surface in place of a solid continuous conductive surface. The periodic mesh pattern maintains the relative voltage and current relationships across the antenna strip while enabling a reduction in physical size. Any uniform periodic mesh pattern may be used and the periodic mesh pattern may be utilized for both strip elements. A brick-wall mesh pattern results in approximately 10% reduction in size over a solid continuous dual strip antenna.
