  • Patent number: 6557022
Abstract: Two multiply-accumulate units are coupled together so that the computation (B*C)+(D*E) can be completed in one cycle. An adder (216) adds together the products of the two multipliers (206), (208). The sum is applied to the first accumulator (220). Preferably, the second product is also applied to the second accumulator (222), and a multiplexer (218) applies either a zero or the second product to the adder (216). If two unrelated computations are to be executed simultaneously, then the zero is applied, and the output of the second accumulator is fed back to the register file (PI2). If a single (B*C)+(D*E) computation is to be executed, then the second product is applied to the adder, and the output of the second accumulator is disregarded.

  • Patent number: 6553538
Abstract: In a communication system which conforms to the IS-99 standard, a concatenated code is used to provide for error free file transfer over the air. The concatenated code comprises Reed-Solomon coding, CRC block coding, and convolutional coding. The file is partitioned into data frames and Reed-Solomon encoding is performed on the data frames. CRC block encoding is then performed on the Reed-Solomon encoded data. The CRC encoded data is convolutionally encoded. The CRC block encoding and convolutional encoding are performed in accordance with the IS-99 standard. The additional Reed-Solomon encoding step provides improved error correction capability while maintaining compatibility with the IS-99 standard. At the receiver, Reed-Solomon decoding is performed if the number of erasures in a code word is less than or equal to (n−k) or the symbol errors in a code word is less than or equal to (n−k)/2. Otherwise, a request for retransmission is sent.

  • Patent number: 6538588
Abstract: A bandpass &Sgr;&Dgr; ADC utilizing either a single-loop or a MASH architecture wherein the resonators are implemented as either a delay cell resonator, a delay cell based resonator, a Forward-Euler resonator, a two-path interleaved resonator, or a four-path interleaved resonator. The resonator can be synthesized with analog circuit techniques such as active-RC, gm-C, MOSFET-C, switched capacitor, or switched current. The switched capacitor or switched current circuits can be designed using single-sampling, double-sampling, or multi-sampling circuits. The non-stringent requirement of a &Sgr;&Dgr; ADC using switched capacitor circuits allows the ADC to be implemented in a CMOS process to minimize cost and reduce power consumption. Double-sampling circuits provide improved matching and improved tolerance to sampling clock jitter. In particular, a bandpass MASH 4-4 &Sgr;&Dgr; ADC provides a simulated signal-to-noise ratio of 85 dB at an oversampling ratio of 32 for a CDMA application.

  • Patent number: 6539242
Abstract: A method of and an apparatus for reducing the average power consumption in a remote unit in a wireless communication system. When a remote unit in a slotted mode communication system enters an active state, it receives a sequence of messages. One element of this sequence is a general paging message that command the remote unit to return to the inactive state immediately, thus conserving battery power. The general paging message is followed by several additional elements in the sequence. When the remote unit operates in a poor signal-to-noise ratio environment, for example, it may not receive the general paging message and may, thus, unnecessarily remain in the active state until the end of its assigned slot, wasting battery power. The invention determines whether the element received by the remote unit is a general paging message. If so, the remote unit enters the inactive mode. If not, the invention determines whether the element occurs after a general paging message in the sequence of messages.

  • Patent number: 6531924
Abstract: The present invention provides a technique for selective cancellation of the 2nd-order or 3rd-order nonlinearity of a transistor. Any nonlinearity is a function of the bias voltage of a transistor. In many cases, this function is such that, at a particular bias voltage, nonlinearity is zero. The invention provides a bias circuit that generates the optimum bias voltage for a transistor at which its selected nonlinearity is zero. Mathematically, the nonlinearity can be represented by a sum of multiple components where some components have negative sign. The components are proportional to the DC currents of the transistor at bias voltages differing by a small amount. The bias circuit includes bias transistors that are scaled versions of the main transistor. Each bias transistor generates a DC current representing one of the components. The currents are combined according to the signs of the respective components to form a DC signal proportional to the selected nonlinearity.

  • Patent number: 6522871
Abstract: The frequency error of an oscillator is minimized by characterizing the operating environment of the oscillator. An electronic device monitors parameters that are determined to have an effect on the frequency accuracy of the internal frequency source. Temperature is one parameter known to have an effect on the frequency of the internal frequency source and a primary contributor to device temperature is the RF Power Amplifier (PA). The electronic device collects and stores the activity level of the PA. The effective PA duty cycle over a predetermined period of time is calculated. The LO operating environment is stabilized by operating the PA at the calculated duty cycle when the LO is required to operate in a high stability mode.

  • Patent number: RE38010
Abstract: An encoder for encoding data as trellis coded data and a decoder for decoding the trellis coded data. The encoder uses a rate ½ convolutional encoder punctured to a rate k/n to produce n symbols from k input bits. The symbols are converted by a converter to sets of p symbols and provided to an interleaver. In the interleaver certain ones of the symbols are delayed. Symbol sets are output from the interleaver to a 2P-ary modem for modulation and transmission. The decoder uses a modem for providing from the modulated data sets of p symbols. A deinterleaver delays certain ones of the symbols to achieve time alignment of the originally interleaved symbols. The sets of time aligned symbols are provided to metric calculators for computing signal metrics which are provided to a converter for providing n sets of metrics to a metric decoder. The metric decoder computes from the n sets of metrics an estimate of the encoded k data bits.
