Patent number: 5944278Abstract: A method and apparatus for reducing, capturing and disposing of the waste start up web of paper in high-speed manufacturing procedures which involve a converting step, e.g. laser perforation or the like. Specifically, the converting apparatus and the web speed are carefully and precisely controlled by a programmable logic controller to result in a rapid production of converted web with a minimum of waste. The apparatus and method are tuned by sampling the waste and web for conversion quality, and using that information to adjust the converting apparatus and bias that adjustment for maximum reduction in waste.Type: GrantFiled: October 16, 1997Date of Patent: August 31, 1999Assignee: Philip Morris IncorporatedInventors: William H. Patent number: 5878752Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for cleaning an electrical lighter are provided. A sleeve, e.g., ceramic or metal, surrounds the heater fixture, and a resistive heating element is in thermal proximity with the sleeve. The resistive heating element is either a dedicated element or the cigarette heating elements. The sleeve serves as a aerosol barrier and condensate accumulator to protect other components. Periodically, e.g., substantially contemporaneously with a battery recharge, the heating element is activated to thermally liberate condensates deposited on the sleeve during smoking and also heats, and thereby cleans, other components. Also, a cleaning element is optionally inserted into the cigarette receptacle of the electrical lighter or placed at the exit thereof to absorb, attract and/or catalytically break down the thermally liberated condensates. The sleeve also directs a desired flow path for drawn air within an electrical lighter toward the cigarette.Type: GrantFiled: November 25, 1996Date of Patent: March 9, 1999Assignee: Philip Morris IncorporatedInventors: John M. Patent number: 5876317Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for preparing discrete blanks from a wound strip comprising a plurality of connected blanks. Each blank has a determined separation point and a marker at a determined distance from the determined separation point for making soft-type wrappers. First, the wound strip is unwound under tension. Next, at least a section of a particular blank of the unwound strip is cut and any other milling and preparatory steps are performed by appropriate rollers and mechanisms. The tension of the unwound strip is slackened periodically, e.g., via chocking these rollers, and the unwound strip is realigned relative to the marker of the particular blank during this slackening, e.g, by identifying the marker via a sensor and driving the strip via rollers. The particular blank of the realigned strip is separated at the determined separation point of the particular blank to separate the particular blank from the realigned strip.Type: GrantFiled: July 17, 1995Date of Patent: March 2, 1999Assignee: Philip Morris IncorporatedInventors: Albert Sigrist, Roberto Rizzolo

Patent number: 5865185Abstract: A smoking article is provided in which a replaceable tobacco flavor unit containing tobacco flavor material is electrically heated by a set of permanent reusable heaters to evolve flavors or other components in vapor or aerosol form for delivery to a smoker. Each heater heats only a portion of the available tobacco flavor material so that a plurality of individual puffs of tobacco flavor substance can be delivered sequentially to the smoker. The replaceable tobacco flavor unit can also include a filter to reduce the effect of residual aerosol which settles or condenses on the permanent portions of the article and which can result in undesirable flavor generation when reheated. A method and apparatus for manufacturing the replaceable tobacco flavor unit is also provided.Type: GrantFiled: May 24, 1995Date of Patent: February 2, 1999Assignee: Philip Morris IncorporatedInventors: Alfred L. Patent number: 5827166Abstract: A device is provided to join the lower end of a strip of paper coming from a nearly-empty reel to the upper end of another strip of paper coming from a full reel. The joining device comprises a rotating striking arm equipped with a hammer on one of its ends and with a cam on the other end. When the join between two strips is to be made, a jack actuates a castor which butts against the cam, thus bringing a striking surface of the hammer closer to the strips to compress and join the strips. The device further comprises a front and a rear cutting fixture permitting the remaining ends of the strips of paper to be cut on either side of the join. Air bearings are provided to guide one or both strips.Type: GrantFiled: December 14, 1994Date of Patent: October 27, 1998Assignee: Philip Morris IncorporatedInventors: Jean Cestonaro, Jean-Luc Mathon

Patent number: 5799665Abstract: A process for expanding tobacco is provided which employs carbon dioxide gas. Tobacco temperature and OV content are adjusted prior to contacting the tobacco with carbon dioxide gas. The disclosed process is suitable for impregnating and expanding tobacco having a high bulk density. In order to achieve a high bulk density, the tobacco may be compacted or compressed to achieve an increased and more uniform bulk density prior to its impregnation with carbon dioxide. The process may be carried out with a short cycle impregnation in an apparatus according to the invention. A thermodynamic path is followed during impregnation which allows a controlled amount of the carbon dioxide gas to condense on the tobacco. This liquid carbon dioxide evaporates during depressurization helping to cool the tobacco bed uniformly. After impregnation, the tobacco may be expanded immediately or kept at or below its post-vent temperature in a dry atmosphere for subsequent expansion.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 1996Date of Patent: September 1, 1998Inventors: Kwang H. Cho, Thomas J. Clarke, Joseph M. Dobbs, Eugene B. Fischer, Diane L. Leister, Jose M. G. Nepomuceno, Walter A. Nichols, Ravi Prasad

Patent number: 5750964Abstract: A smoking system is provided in which a replaceable cigarette containing tobacco flavor material is electrically heated by a set of electrical heater elements contained within a lighter to evolve tobacco flavors or other components in vapor or aerosol form for delivery to a smoker. The cigarette and lighter are adapted to provide air flow patterns through the smoking system such that air flows transversely into the cigarette. Such patterns improve aerosol and flavor delivery to the smoker and reduce the condensation of residual heater-region vapor/aerosol in the smoking system.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 1997Date of Patent: May 12, 1998Assignee: Philip Morris IncorporatedInventors: Mary E. Patent number: 5724998Abstract: Reconstituted tobacco sheets manufactured from tobacco dust and binder are described herein. More particularly, the tobacco dust has a mean particle size in the range of from about 60 mesh to about 400 mesh to afford reconstituted tobacco sheets having about 80% to about 90% tobacco content with improved quality and survivability. The reduced particle size of the tobacco dust allows an increase in the solids content of the slurry without an increase in slurry viscosity. The increased solids content reduces the drying load of the cast sheet thereby allowing an increased production rate. The reconstituted tobacco sheets may be prepared from a slurry comprising tobacco dust and binder that may be subjected to a means for removing air trapped within the slurry before casting the slurry into sheets. An apparatus for determining the amount of air trapped within the slurry prepared according to the process of the present invention is also described herein.Type: GrantFiled: August 20, 1996Date of Patent: March 10, 1998Assignee: Philip Morris IncorporatedInventors: Grant Gellatly, Gus Keritsis, Susan E.
