  • Patent number: 5715241
Abstract: The inability of an ISDN equipment user to properly configure ISDN terminal equipment, even when provided with correctly assigned switch protocol, SPID and LDN parameters by a telephone service provider, is successfully remedied by a SPID/switch protocol detector. Upon being invoked by the user, the routine proceeds to conduct an iterative search of stored SPID formats associated with different central office switch protocols. SPIDs are assembled in accordance with the iteratively accessed SPID formats and directory number information that has been entered by the user. If an attempt to register a SPID is successful, the routine places a test call. If the test call is successful, the SPID and its associated switch protocol will have been identified, and the terminal equipment may place a call.

  • Patent number: 5712898
Abstract: A performance monitoring arrangement conducts auxiliary in-band communications between a line interface unit and one or more channel units of a D4 channel bank without interrupting transmission of digital data to and from a customer premises. During a first, initialization mode of operation, and a second, smart performance-monitoring mode, the data communication format of a channel bank RNPCM bus is modified to allow insertion of an auxiliary line interface unit-sourced command bit between selected bits of the data. During the second mode of operation, the communication format of the channel bank link is further modified to provide for the transmission of the data at an increased data rate. This increased data rate permits a response message bit from the channel unit to be asserted on the RNPCM bus during a first time interval separate from that occupied by the increased rate data.

  • Patent number: 5710519
Abstract: A circuit arrangement automatically sets quiescent collector current conditions for a class A/B RF power transistor, which is configured of a plurality of parallel-connected transistors formed in a common semiconductor die. The biasing circuit arrangement includes a temperature-sensing transistor having its collector-emitter current flow path coupled with a programmable constant current source. A differential amplifier circuit is coupled to the base and emitter electrodes of the temperature sensing transistor, and generates a bias voltage for biasing each of the transistors of the RF power device. This bias voltage is combined with a programmable D.C. offset voltage. The values of the constant current and D.C. offset voltage are programmed such that the average of the quiescent collector currents of the parallel-connected transistors of the RF power transistor corresponds to the quiescent collector current through the temperature-sensing transistor.

  • Patent number: 5696452
Abstract: Room temperature-testing of an MOS field effect transistor architecture, whose parameters have been optimized for operation at cryogenic temperatures, is facilitated by applying a prescribed reverse body-to-source voltage bias, that modifies the variation of the drain-to-source current vs. gate-to-source voltage characteristic, so as to shift the gate threshold voltage to a value corresponding to the device operating at its optimally designed cryogenic temperature. The magnitude of this back bias voltage is set at a value which adds to the number of charges required to balance the gate voltage before an inversion condition is achieved. In effect, the back bias causes the depletion layer beneath the gate to be expanded into the body beneath the gate, thereby compensating for what would otherwise be depletion mode operation, if the cryogenically designed MOS device were placed at room temperature.

  • Patent number: 5686322
Abstract: A reduced mask set, implant complexity process for manufacturing a (high frequency application) complementary bipolar transistor structure uses the fast lateral diffusion characteristic of a layer of material, that is at least an order of magnitude higher for emitter dopants than in single crystal semiconductor material. Separate base and emitter poly layers are formed undoped. Then, the emitter poly of one device and the edges of the base poly of the other device are exposed through a dopant mask and simultaneously doped. The emitter dopant goes directly into the surface of the emitter poly where it lies over and is in contact with the base. The base contact dopant goes into the edges of the base poly, including the layer of material having the high diffusion coefficient, rapidly diffuses laterally throughout that layer, and then diffuses down into the collector material (e.g. island) surface, to form the extrinsic base.

  • Patent number: 5684894
Abstract: Prescribed attributes such as lines and edges are detected in an image wherein the image is digitized to a prescribed spatial and a digital encoding resolution. Directional energy and positions of linear structures in the image are then estimated, and global and local normalization of the linear structures are performed. Spatial and directional competition is conducted among the linear structures and winners of this competition are determined. The winners are encoded into strings of digital data words, with the encoded winners forming a structural description of the original image. The encoded structural description of the original image can be stored and used in other image processing algorithms, such as those used for pattern recognition.

  • Patent number: 5682336
Abstract: The noise performance of a non-linear circuit design is measured prior to circuit fabrication by a circuit modelling and analysis mechanism, which simulates each noise source as a reduced complexity continuous Gaussian noise waveform. A respective noise source (e.g. thermal or shot) is modelled as a time domain sequence of continuously connected third order polynomial signal waveforms, forming a cubic spline that interconnects successively occurring Gaussian signal amplitude values. For each type of noise source, its associated Gaussian function is determined by the product of the constant multipliers associated with that type of source. The number of points processed for each noise source depends upon the time width of a noise analysis window.

  • Patent number: 5680391
Abstract: A subscriber line circuit test and conditioning arrangement for use with a non-metallic (fiber optic) digital communication path-based digital communication network employs a single (basic rate ISDN) metallic channel unit (BMCU) installed at a site terminating the fiber optic communication path. A BMCU communicates with a central office test system using an auxiliary B-ISDN communication `test` channel portion (2B+D) channels of the time division multiplexed digital communication DS0 channels. Digital command and response signals are transported by the two ISDN bearer (B) channels and are coupled directly to tip and ring digital signal processors in the central office test system, without the need for intermediate digital-to-analog and analog-to-digital conversion by a metallic channel unit at a central office terminal, and that additionally performed by a central office terminal and central office switch.

  • Patent number: 5678563
Abstract: Whether a (stroke) patient is at risk for oral or pharyngeal dysphagia is determined by conducting a cough-based screening process for clinically evaluating the patient's swallow. The cough-based screening methodology is able to identify those patients who require a modified barium swallow test in order to rule out aspiration, and which patients do not need a modified barium swallow test. In accordance with the process the patient attempts to cough voluntarily. If the patient is unable to cough voluntarily, the patient is required to inhale an aerosol that stimulates a sensory innervation of the patient's larynx, thereby causing the patient to cough. The resulting cough is graded to determine whether the patient is at risk to a prescribed physiological condition, in particular pneumonia. The cough tests are supplemented by monitoring the ability of the patient to hold water in the patient's mouth for a prescribed period of time.

  • Patent number: 5680422
Abstract: A wander reduction mechanism in an HDSL pulse-stuffing synchronization system provides a more precise measure of the phase of the incoming asynchronous signal than is obtained in conventional schemes, in which the only information available is the presence or absence of stuffing pulses. An auxiliary phase comparator and phase adjuster are incorporated into the synchronizer-multiplexer to generate a reference data clock (derived from the synchronized data clock), so that the incoming unsynchronized data clock can be tracked. As the clock is iteratively phase-adjusted, the respective changes are accumulated. At the end of a prescribed measurement interval, the net contents of the accumulator are encoded and transported over the synchronous digital data communication channel to the receiver.
