  • Patent number: 5809033
Abstract: The range of digital data communication services, such as a basic rate 2B1Q ISDN channel, to customer premises located beyond the industry standard achievable range of a two-wire loop can be extended by increasing the capacity of the ISDN line code from two information bits per symbol to three information bits per symbol, so as to reduce the effective symbol rate, which is error correction encoded to an effective 4B1H line code for defining a sixteen level PAM signal waveform, and employing enhanced low signal-to-noise ratio signal processing techniques in both the transmitter and receiver to accommodate the increased insertion loss of the two-wire line resulting from its extended length. Such enhanced low signal-to-noise ratio signal processing techniques include a Tomlinson precoder in the transmitter, and an adaptive linear equalizer and a module unit in the receiver.

  • Patent number: 5808516
Abstract: A linearized voltage controlled amplifier (VCA) circuit uses the resistance of a gain control MOSFET to control amplifier gain in accordance with a DC gain control voltage. A gain control voltage is applied to the gain control MOSFET's gate through a gate input resistor that forms a voltage divider with a feedback resistor from the output of the amplifier. Since the VCA's output terminal is a low impedance node, the voltage divider network applies most of the gain control voltage to the gate of the gain control MOSFET. Conversely, a small fraction of the amplifier output signal is coupled to the gain control MOSFET's gate, to reduce distortion. The linearized VCA circuit is augmented by a gate drive correction circuit, through which the gain control voltage is coupled to the VCA's gain control MOSFET. The gate drive correction circuit is comprised of a difference amplifier and a compensating MOSFET that is matched with the gain control MOSFET of the VCA circuit for controlling its gate drive voltage.

  • Patent number: 5805600
Abstract: State of the art data compression-protocol engines provide high compression ratios for improving data transport over a high data rate serial communication link. However, a respective data port of data terminal equipment may not be capable of being clocked at a sufficiently high clock rate, which limits the performance of the data compression-protocol engine, and prevents full utilization of the available bandwidth of the serial link. To remedy this problem, data terminal equipment and data compression-protocol engine components that provide auxiliary data communication port connectivity are employed. Data from the data terminal equipment is clocked to the data compression-protocol engine over a plurality of parallel data paths. This increases the effective clock rate and enables the data compression-protocol engine to output a compressed data stream that fully utilizes the bandwidth of the network.

  • Patent number: 5805317
Abstract: An ultra-wideband signal processor, such as that employed for processing narrow time domain radar return pulses, includes a coherent acousto-optic Bragg cell channelizer having a plurality of IF outputs from which a plurality of IF output signals respectively representative of energy content of respectively different frequency portions of the RF input signal are derived. A summing circuit is coupled to sum the IF output signals to produce a summation signal representative of their average energy content. This average energy signal is compared with a threshold to determine if the input signal is a valid RF signal. A delay circuit delays a selected one of the IF output channels by a time sufficient to accommodate summation of the channelizer outputs and determining whether a valid RF signal is present. A digital signal processor processes the delayed selected output signal in response to the summation signal exceeding the threshold.

  • Patent number: 5794325
Abstract: A pistol-configured, electrically operated impact tool for seating and cutting a wire includes a D.C. motor whose output shaft has transversely extending, cam surface-engaging elements that engage a cam-configured impact element. As the output shaft is rotated by the operation of the D.C. motor, the cam surface-engaging elements are rotated to an angle where they begin to engage cam portions of the impact element. As a result of this engagement, the impact element is linearly translated away from the cutting tool holder and toward the electric motor. During this linear translation of the impact element away from the cutting tool holder, a bias spring is compressed, so as to increase the force stored in the spring. Eventually, the output shaft will be rotated to an angle brings the cam surface-engaging elements into alignment with a prescribed feature of the cam portions of the impact element.

  • Patent number: 5776814
Abstract: A reduced mask set, implant complexity process for manufacturing a (high frequency application) complementary bipolar transistor structure uses the fast lateral diffusion characteristic of a layer of material, that is at least an order of magnitude higher for emitter dopants than in single crystal semiconductor material. Separate base and emitter poly layers are formed undoped. Then, the emitter poly of one device and the edges of the base poly of the other device are exposed through a dopant mask and simultaneously doped. The emitter dopant goes directly into the surface of the emitter poly where it lies over and is in contact with the base. The base contact dopant goes into the edges of the base poly, including the layer of material having the high diffusion coefficient, rapidly diffuses laterally throughout that layer, and then diffuses down into the collector material (e.g. island) surface, to form the extrinsic base.
