  • Patent number: 4235387
Abstract: This winding-apparatus comprises a spindle or collet on which strand or roving is wound and an oscillating mechanism carrying a traverse guide and a follower. The follower is in contact with the circumference and activates an excitation element which continuously acts on a hydraulic or an electric motor which operates the oscillating apparatus. In this way, the oscillating apparatus moves progressively away and by a continuous motion from the spindle as the spool grows. The follower 14 is balanced around an oscillation axis Z-Z to exert a minimal force on the spool. The application disclosed is the winding of strand formed of glass filaments coming from a bushing.

  • Patent number: 4227464
Abstract: Leg structure for portable, height-adjustable gantries is disclosed having an upper, single vertical tubular post member telescopingly received within an open-ended sleeve formed by coupled aligned channel members of lower, break-apart sectional supporting framework. The channel members are supported and elevated by diagonal bracing members and struts giving a generally inverted-Y shaped configuration to the leg so that it can straddle objects and permitting the free, unobstructed downward passage of the post through the lower opening of the sleeve. A locking bolt passes through aligned holes in the post and channels to selectively hold their relative positions, with hand-operated winch means aiding the movement of the post. Post extension members are disclosed which can be added to the leg post while the gantry is assembled. The plate connection between the top of the post and a load-supporting I-beam is externally and internally braced by triangles and post weldment or casting insert elements, respectively.

  • Patent number: 4210293
Abstract: A process and apparatus for strand transfer is disclosed. The transfer occurs during the exchange of two winding collets in which the first, full collet, is shifted to the position where it is emptied while the second, empty collet, picks up the strand. According to the disclosure, the linear drive speed of the first collet is reduced; the arc of contact of the strand on the circumference of the second collet is increased as the second collet arrives at the position previously occupied by the first; the portion of the strand travelling from one to the other is engaged between the collets and the engagement of this portion is maintained and progressive breaking of the strand by abrasion is effected until the second collet takes up the strand. A novel device comprising a moveable means capable of introducing and maintaining the strand in position between the two collets and abrading the strand until the transfer has taken place is disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4205800
Abstract: Apparatus and method for winding a continuous strand formed from an attenuable material is disclosed. An end face of a winding collet includes strand-engaging elements spaced about the periphery of the end face of the collet that engage the strand as it is brought against the face of the collet. There are at least three strand-engaging elements on the face of the collet. The strand is conducted from the strand-engaging elements to the starting drum and is wound on the collet until it reaches operating speed. When the winding collet is at its operating speed, the strand is urged onto a winding sleeve to form the winding.

  • Patent number: 4204405
Abstract: A drive system useful for driving reciprocating equipment such as saw mill log carriages or the like is disclosed. The drive system includes a plurality of fixed displacement pumps driven by a prime mover. The pumps in turn drive one or more fixed displacement hydraulic motors which drive the carriage. The pumps are provided with pressure responsive unloading valves which unload at different pressures so that as pressure on the system builds up one or more pumps are sequentially unloaded. An accumulator is charged at low pressures and provides fluid for driving the motors when required at the higher pressures. The inertial forces in the heavy carriage, during the time when the carriage is slowing down, are used to drive the fixed displacement motors as pumps. During this portion of the cycle, the motors are interconnected with the accumulator so that the pumping action of the motors is used to recharge the accumulator.

  • Patent number: 4202448
Abstract: Carriers adapted to support strand spools in wire type pallets are disclosed. Each carrier comprises a tray having gripping devices or claws for centering the carrier at the intersection of the crossed support wires which comprise the pallet. Tubular supports extending upwardly and downwardly from the central tray are adapted to hold the ends of spools in position on stacked pallets. The lower support is slotted so that it can extend beneath the plane of the pallet. A central bore extending through the supports and the spool tray allows for circulation of air and treatment fluid so that the spools may be treated with steam or other treatment gas while on the pallets.

  • Patent number: 4193557
Abstract: Apparatus and method for winding a continuous strand formed from an attenuable material is disclosed. The winding collet has a starting drum mounted on one end. An end face of the starting drum includes diametrically opposed strand engaging members that engage the strand as it is brought against the face of the starting drum. The strand is conducted from the strand engaging means to the starting drum and is wound on the starting drum until the winding collet reaches operating speed. When the winding collet is at its operating speed, the strand is urged away from the starting drum and onto the winding collet to form the winding.

  • Patent number: 4188166
Abstract: A compact telemanipulator arm assembly with a rotatable gripping tool is disclosed that is watertight and has a sleek profile suitable for penetrating into narrow underwater passages of nuclear reactors. The assembly has a plurality of elongated arm elements jointed together end-to-end in series relationship. Bending of adjacent elements is achieved by an axially aligned motor housed within one of the adjacent elements, a screw-nut system that converts the motor shaft rotation to axial movement of a slider, and mechanical linkage that converts the slider movement to relative pivoting of the elements. The gripping tool is mounted on a tool support on an end element. Tool gripping members are operated by a first axially aligned motor housed within the end element and a screw-nut system that converts the first motor shaft rotation to axial movement of a slider.

  • Patent number: 4134541
Abstract: A condensate removal device which includes two parallel paths for removal of condensate and gases from a fluid system is provided with a thermostatically operated valve in one path and a drain orifice of a preselected size in the other path. The combination is disclosed as it is used in drain lines of a steam system. A bellows or other thermostatically operated valve controls one path to the drain and is in the open position during warmup of the system to permit the passage of the large quantities of air, condensate, particulates and other matter which are present in the system during the warmup stage of operation. The thermostatic element is designed to be closed at operating temperatures. The drain orifice in the other path is designed to continuously pass the condensate and the like which will form in the line when the system is at or near operating temperatures while restricting the passage of working vapor.

  • Patent number: 4089166
Abstract: A control system for plural circuits having motor-driven hydraulic pumps. As disclosed, a pair of pumps is connected in a hydraulic actuating circuit individual to that pair and the circuit includes an hydraulically operated actuator to be advanced and retracted by fluid under pressure delivered from the pair of pumps of that circuit. A single prime mover drives the pair of pumps and pumps in other circuits, and each circuit has a pressure-responsive control valve which provides for unloading a pump of the first circuit in response to increases in pressure in the various other circuits to a predetermined value at which, in the absence of such unloading, the input horsepower requirement has risen toward a value which would stall the prime mover.Pumps in several of the circuits may be sequentially and selectively unloaded.

  • Patent number: 4073217
Abstract: A hydraulically or pneumatically controlled device for locking a piston in he bore of its cylinder at any point of its stroke, comprises, mounted on the piston, fluid-tight seals, a series of wedges, and annular jacks incorporated in the piston. The wedges are arranged to move in translation parallel to the axis of the cylinder under the effect of the annular jacks so as to absorb the increase in the radial plays between the piston and the bore of the cylinder on its pressurization. This peripheral extension which is produced between the bottom of the cylinder on its intake side and the fluid-tight end seal of the piston spaced furthest from it, is followed, after the release of the lateral walls of the cylinder, by a retraction of the lateral walls of the cylinder acting on the outer surface of the wedges. The latter exert a grip on the piston thus effecting positive locking by binding of the cylinder and of the piston.
