  • Patent number: 4216593
Abstract: Apparatus for demonstrating the operation of a closed loop nuclear steam electric generating plant includes a transparent boiler assembly having immersion heating elements, which may be quartz lamps or stainless steel encased resistive immersion heating units with a quartz iodide lamp providing a source of visible radiation when using the encased immersion heating units. A variable voltage autotransformer is geared to a support rod for simulated reactor control rods for controlling the energy delivered to the heating elements and arranged so that when the voltage is high, the rods are withdrawn from the boiler to produce increased heating and illumination proportional to rod position, thereby simulating nuclear reaction. A relief valve, steam outlet pipe and water inlet pipe are connected to the boiler with a small stainless steel resistive heating element in the steam outlet pipe providing superheat.

  • Patent number: 4202107
Abstract: A member having an axis to be positioned in an opening whose axis may be displaced from the member axis is connected by three rods, wires or wire ropes equally spaced about the axis secured to a supporting plate and having a first portion generally perpendicular to the plate and a second portion extending downwardly from the first portion with the lower end closer to the member axis than the upper end with the first portions allowing translation of the member and the second portion allowing rotation of the member to enable the member to be aligned in the opening as the upper support member moves downward toward the opening. The rods, wires or wire ropes may be separated by a spreader and reside within an elastic body with damping and be preloaded in tension or compression.

  • Patent number: 4196368
Abstract: Incandescent light bulb efficiency is improved by: (1) modifying the surface micro-structure of a lamp filament in such a way as to increase the emissivity in the visible region of the spectrum without significantly increasing this quantity outside this spectral region, or suppressing the emission of energy outside the visible portion of the spectrum by modifying the surface structure; (2) application of refractory coatings on the lamp filament that are highly emissive in the visible region of the spectrum; and (3) coating the filament with an "optically thin" refractory material to suppress filament evaporation, permitting higher operating temperature.

  • Patent number: 4194511
Abstract: In an electrocardiographic system there is a multielement electrode at two skin locations for providing an ECG signal of negligible magnitude between elements because of the close spacing while the pair of elements are sufficiently separated so that the motion of one element is at least partially independent of the motion of the other. Parallel ECG signals are obtained from different elements of two multielement electrodes. The difference between the signals is detected by logical circuitry to produce a signal indicating baseline shift. The elements are coaxial with a 250 K resistor in series with each outer element.

  • Patent number: 4191848
Abstract: The first signal transition of a teletypewriter signal triggers a resettable one-shot that activates the motor run switch to turn the teletypewriter motor on for a minimum interval of from two seconds to several minutes and also is applied to the input of a shift register that digitizes and delays the teletypewriter input signal enough to allow the motor to reach operating speed, typically 600 milliseconds, before the delayed signal is applied to the Teletype printer. If no signal is received for a duration that exceeds the shift register delay, logical circuitry increases the shift pulse rate so that the delay shift register furnishes negligible delay. Absence of an input signal for an interval longer than the astable ON interval of the resettable one-shot deactivates the motor run switch.

  • Patent number: 4191421
Abstract: A seat belt structure mountable in a vehicle which provides a delayed release to the seat belt when the attached vehicle is struck from the side adjacent the seat about which the structure is mounted so as to avoid entrapment of a belted occupant of the seat. The inner side of the structure is fitted with a first seat belt, the free end of which is attachable to a second seat belt fastened adjacent an outer side of the vehicle with the fixed end of the first seat belt detachably fastened by a latch pin fixed to a lateral bar extending under the seat and joined at the outer side of the seat to a longitudinal arm. A collision force applied sidewards against the longitudinal arm and lateral bar towards the center of the vehicle moves the latch pin out of engagement with the first seat belt end so as to free the first seat belt end.

  • Patent number: 4186273
Abstract: Left and right stereo power amplifiers receive power from the 12-volt D.C. automobile supply bypassed by a single capacitor for both amplifiers and energize left and right loudspeakers in series with the junction of the series-connected speakers coupled to ground through a capacitor that allows the left and right speakers to be independently driven by the left and right power amplifiers, respectively, by spectral components above the crossover frequency determined by the speaker impedance and the capacitor impedance. Each power amplifier is driven by an equalizing circuit including a photocell illuminated by an LED that is driven by a feedback signal from the power amplifier.

  • Patent number: 4181421
Abstract: Three or more tanks holding photographic processing solutions are arranged in series in a processing machine that transports photographic material sequentially in and out of each tank by turn-around assemblies inside each tank and by crossover assemblies between adjacent tanks. Each assembly includes a driven roller and an endless belt which holds the processed material against the periphery of the driven roller. Similar assemblies feed the first tank at the input end of the machine and deliver the material from the last tank at the exit end of the machine.

  • Patent number: 4180140
Abstract: In a loudspeaker system having eight drivers on a baffle, the baffle has two port openings centered in respective squares embracing respective groups of four drivers. A tubular column extender snaps into each port opening and has a snap cap for detachably securing a polyester disk over the opening. A grill formed with two openings for accomodating the column extenders covers the drivers. A grill retainer formed with openings at each end for accomodating the column extenders abuts the grill, and clinch nuts screws on the threaded end of ach column extender to keep the grill retainer against the grill with the grill against the front baffle.

  • Patent number: RE30154
Abstract: A joint is formed by pushing a grooved tenon into a dovetail-shaped mortise containing a barbed wedge such that the wedge is forced into the tenon groove, thereby spreading the tenon to the dovetail shape of the mortise and anchoring the barbs into the tenon, thus securing the joint and preventing the tenon and mortise from separating.

  • Patent number: RE30253
Abstract: An operative internal combustion engine is transparent for demonstration of internal combustion engine principles. A transparent cylinder houses a noncontacting piston, a combustion chamber being sealed by means such as protruding annular teflon rings seated in an annular groove of the piston or a flexible flap formed integrally with the piston which is pressed firmly to the internal surface of the cylinder wall by pressure developed within the combustion chamber during operation of the engine. Other portions of the engine are transparent to enable their contained parts to be observed during operation. The engine also has an enlarged flywheel to permit operation of the engine at low, observable speeds. The invention burns low carbon fuels such as alcohol to keep the cylinder walls clean and operate without polluting the air.
