  • Patent number: 4445061
Abstract: A rotating electric machine with a permanent magnet rotor, provided with a stator composed of a winding and a ferrite structure to provide low power losses and improved efficiency particularly at high rotor revolution rates, is constructed so as to optimize the performance of the permanent magnets on the rotor. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the ferrite being selected for its low hysteresis and eddy current power losses, generically referred to as core loss and its low loss factor which are frequency dependent, replaces laminated electrical iron. Additionally the permanent magnets selected to exhibit high intrinsic magnetic intensity and low remanent magnetic flux density, are arranged in conjunction with the ferrite to maximize the magnet's energy product as well as the magnetic circuit gap length, which in combination provides a radical improvement in machine energy density.

  • Patent number: 4444571
Abstract: A process is disclosed for the recovery and reuse of the heat contained in the gas/vapor overhead mixture from a stripping column in which a noncondensable gas is stripped from a liquid solution by contacting the solution with a hot vapor such as steam. The steam or other vapor in the overhead mixture is separated from the non-condensable gas or gases by preferentially passing the vapor through a semipermeable membrane. The water or other condensable vapor is then compressed and either reinjected at the bottom of the stripping column or condensed in the column reboiler, thus permitting its reuse in the stripping process. If the compressed vapor is reinjected into the stripping column, it serves as the stripping medium itself. If the compessed vapor is condensed in the column reboiler, its latent heat of vaporization is thereby recovered and used to generate the required stripping vapor by boiling the solution being stripped.

  • Patent number: 4439086
Abstract: A loader permitting a boat to be conveniently lifted from an upright position alongside a vehicle to an inverted position atop the vehicle includes a pair of tracks extending transversely across the top of the vehicle and downwardly along the side of the vehicle, and a carriage mounted for travel along the tracks between a raised transport position and a lowered loading and unloading position. A cable is connected with a winch and extends around a pair of sheaves located on opposite sides of the carriage to extend from the winch to a lower or far side sheave, then to an upper or near side sheave, and then to the boat. In loading a boat, retracting the cable first tilts the boat sideways into contact with the carriage and then raises both the carriage and the boat to the transport position. The apparatus permits a boat to be loaded onto or unloaded from the top of a vehicle used to tow another vehicle such as a camping trailer without the need to first unhitch the trailer.

  • Patent number: 4439323
Abstract: A method for filtering and discharging waste water from a septic tank in predetermined increments and preventing passage of suspended solids from the tank while resisting blockage of the fluid discharge apparatus by such solids. A removable fluid discharge device, such as a submersible pump or dosing siphon with a trigger trap, is enclosed within an encircling filter element which is similarly encircled by a protective housing, and the entire assembly is located within a septic tank immersed in waste water. The protective housing is impervious to the passage of waste water into its interior except through apertures located in the vertical sidewalls so situated as to allow water from only the clearest layer within the tank to enter into the housing and contact the filter. Functionally, the housing protects the filter from blockage by the high concentration of solids present in the layers above and below the clearest layer.

  • Patent number: 4435117
Abstract: A lift truck load clamp, for handling cylindrical loads such as paper rolls, having an automatically adjustable load positioner extending between the clamp arms which moves forwardly in response to closure of the clamp arms and rearwardly in response to opening thereof to assist the lift truck operator in positioning the clamp arms with respect to rolls of different diameters such that the contact pads of the clamp arms automatically grip such differently-sized rolls in diametrically-opposed relation. The load positioner is particularly adapted for use with clamps wherein both clamp arms are movable with respect to a clamp frame, because each end of the positioner is separately movable forwardly or rearwardly with respect to the frame in response to movement of the respective adjacent clamp arm.

  • Patent number: 4432375
Abstract: A method and apparatus for analyzing cardiac electrical activity and other life signs, and triggering a therapeutic current. A signal representative of cardiac electrical activity is analyzed by two distinct analog circuits and a logic protocol is provided to indentify cardiac arrhythmia based on the outputs of the circuits and the presence or absence of respiration. One circuit employs comparison of the electrical signal with a previous peak value thereof, and is characterized by its tendency to double-count some QRS complexes. The other circuit compares the sum of the rectified and low-pass filtered signal plus the derivative of the signal to a reference level, and compares the rectified and filtered signal to a threshold level, to identify QRS complexes while largely ignoring ventricular fibrillation.

  • Patent number: 4414683
Abstract: An apparatus for placing film in the proper position for taking an x-ray or similar image of a patient lying on a bed having a compressible mattress is comprised of a base which supports the apparatus and is arranged for fitting between the bed and the mattress. A film holder, which is arranged for removably receiving and carrying a film cassette is adjustably positioned above the mattress adjacent to the patient by a positioning apparatus which is interconnected to both the base and the film holder. A locking device associated with the positioning apparatus locks the film holder relative to the base when it is in its desired location. Accordingly, the film holder support apparatus can be used to compress the mattress alongside of the patient thereby permitting the film to be placed in a location adjacent to the patient which would otherwise be occupied by the mattress.

  • Patent number: 4406676
Abstract: A method for using comminuted lignocellulosic waste material such as flake-like wood and bark chips which have been stored outside includes placing the material in a filter bed by movement in a first direction, and thereafter passing polluted effluent gas from a boiler furnace, for example through said filter bed in a direction generally perpendicular to said first direction to filter pollutants from said effluent gas and simultaneously dry the comminuted lignocellulosic waste material. During drying of the material a portion of the material on the gas outlet side of the filter bed, toward which the effluent gas proceeds, is maintained at a moisture content which is greater than the average moisture content of the lignocellulosic material at the time it is placed into the filter bed. The lignocellulosic waste material is thereafter used as furnace fuel or as a furnace for an industrial process.
