  • Patent number: 5417252
Abstract: Tool for binding an object (19) by means of a strip which consists of a strip tongue (7) and a lock which is connected to one end of the strip tongue and has a strip opening for retaining the other end of the strip tongue. The tool, which is of elongated construction, has a loop guide (15, 16), which can be opened and closed, on the end of the tool for guiding the strip around the object (19). Provided within the loop guide on the end of the tool is a lock holder (34, 35) from which the loop guide (15, 16) originates and to which it returns. Provided in the tool body is a guide channel (5), which runs approximately parallel to its longitudinal direction, for guiding the strip in its longitudinal direction from an original position into the looping-round and binding position. According to the invention, it is provided that the lock holder (34, 35) is arranged on the end surface of the tool on the circumference of the largest circular cross-section which can be retained by the loop guide ( 15, 16).

  • Patent number: 5417254
Abstract: Tool for binding an object by means of a strip, which has a strip tongue and a strip lock with a strip opening which receives the free end of the strip tongue. The tool comprises a lock holder and a loop guide, which originates from the lock holder, returns thereto and can be opened and closed, for guiding the strip around the object to be bound. Furthermore, the tool comprises a slide for feeding the strip into a position in which the strip tongue is located in the loop guide, and the lock is located in the lock holder. According to the invention, the lock holder is at least partially formed by the slide. In consequence, other holding parts having associated drive and control means are superfluous for fixed enclosure of the lock in the holder. The part of the lock holder which is arranged on the slide may have a guide for the free strip end which enters into the lock holder region from the loop guide.

  • Patent number: 5417253
Abstract: Tool for binding an object by means of a strip which, consists of a strip tongue and a lock which is firmly connected to one end of the strip tongue and has a strip opening for retaining the other end of the strip tongue. The tool comprises a binding device and a retaining device and, for guiding the strip from the strip retaining device to the binding device, a guide channel with which an elongated, flexible slide interacts which is guided via a drive roller which is provided at the end of the guide channel remote from the binding device. According to the invention, the elongated, flexible slide, or a part of the same, is formed by a flat slide strip, consisting especially of metal, which is broader than the guide channel at least in parts of its length, guide grooves being provided in the side walls of the guide channel for receiving the edges of the slide strip.

  • Patent number: 5416879
Abstract: Water or some other aqueous fluid is employed as the light transmitting medium of a liquid-core fiber-optic wave guide employed as a spectrophotometer cell by employing, to define the core region, a polymer having a refractive index of less than 1.33. The light conducting channel defined by the aqueous fluid filled core may be a capillary or other suitably shaped vessel. The analysis of samples is accomplished by drawing a sample into the wave guide core region throughout the use of a fiber optic piston and thereafter delivering measurement light to the sample via the piston.

  • Patent number: 5413447
Abstract: In a book binding operation, opened covers are brought into alignment with moving book blocks by a feed system which applies a pneumatic hold-down force to the moving covers. This hold-down force provides for a braking effect which varies as a function of the characteristics of the cover, the braking effect minimizing the chances of overshoot. The hold-down force also provides a stiffening effect, in the direction of cover movement, which varies as a function of cover thickness and minimizes the possibility of crushing.

  • Patent number: 5409340
Abstract: Spine strip stock material, being withdrawn from a supply reel, is cut into pieces of the desired length and the pieces are subsequently fed into positionally accurate contact with cover boards which are moving on a conveying system. High cutting and feeding accuracy are achieved by a servomotor control system which, in response to sensing the motion of the cover boards, stops the infeed of the stock material, clamps and cuts the stationary stock material, feeds the cut spine strip pieces to a waiting position and then moves the pieces from the waiting position into contact with the cover boards.

  • Patent number: 5409341
Abstract: A book cover assembly apparatus includes a cover table and a transport arm. The transport arm has a vertically moveable suction head which carries cover boards to the cover table which is initially in an inclined acquiring position. The transport arm establishes an initial line of contact between an adhesively coated cover cloth disposed on the cover table and the cover boards. The cover table is pivoted to a horizontal position in synchronization with movement of the transport arm thereby progressively diminishing the angle included by the cover cloth and cover boards. Such combined movement causes the contact line to move across the cover cloth, rolling the cover cloth into contact with the cover boards.

  • Patent number: 5406714
Abstract: A level vial assembly for use in a carpenter's or mason's level. The assembly includes a vial mounting subassembly to be mounted in a level body, consisting of at least a vial holding plate and one or more vials which are mountable therein, and one, or preferably two, bezel-lens subassemblies for protecting the vial. The vial is positioned in the mounting plate between a pair of oppositely directed notches, and is held in position by a tab which extends outwardly from the side of the vial and bears against the holding plate. The tab limits lateral movement of the vial in one direction. The holding plate is mountable within an aperture in the level body. The bezel-lens subassemblies are mountable in the level body aperture on opposite sides of the vials. One of the bezel-lens subassemblies includes a vial support portion adapted to bear against the vial to prevent lateral movement in another lateral direction.

  • Patent number: 5405215
Abstract: A mobile paving machine which may, with minor modification, be employed either to distribute material along the path of movement of the machine or in a region which is laterally offset to one side of the motion path. In order to spread material in a laterally offset region, which may correspond to a break-down lane being formed along the side of a travel lane, a tiltable secondary skip is installed above the primary skip to which paving material is normally supplied. A scraper is mounted from an extension of the distribution beam of the machine to controllably disperse material discharged through an end of the secondary skip when the loaded secondary skip is angularly inclined to cause gravity induced flow of material into the lateral region.

  • Patent number: 5403914
Abstract: A chemotactic factor released from tissue in response to injury represents the initial signal that recruits neutrophils to the tissue. As released, the factor exists as a positively charged protein complex consisting of a low molecular weight active peptide factor that carries a neutral to negative charge and a weakly associated high molecular weight protein. The tissue derived complex exhibits a molecular weight of about 100,000-300,000 daltons and the factor is obtained therefrom and purified. The peptide factor is non-immune cell derived and non-serum derived and exhibits a molecular weight of approximately 3,000 daltons.

  • Patent number: 5404391
Abstract: Each of the cellular telephones is adapted to receive a paging signal and to transmit a voice channel signal on a voice channel frequency in response to the paging signal. The alert system includes a receiver tuned to receive the voice channel frequency. A trigger circuit is connected to the output of the receiver to be activated by the receiver when the receiver receives a voice channel signal on the voice channel frequency. An alert is produced by either an audio signal generator, a vibratory generator or a radio mute, and each of the latter is connected to the ouput of the trigger. Thus, an alert is provided on receipt of an incoming telephone call.

  • Patent number: 5401269
Abstract: Intervertebral disc endoprosthesis with two prosthesis plates which are to be connected to the end plates of the relevant vertebrae, and with a prosthesis core which cooperates with at least one prosthesis plate via an articular surface permitting a rotational movement around the vertical axis, In order indeed to make possible a rotational movement around the vertical axis but to oppose this movement by a resistance, the articular surface forms curved arches of different average radius in the median section and in the frontal section. The radius of curvature in the sagittal section is expediently less than in the frontal section. To avoid excessive twisting it is possible to provide stops on the prosthesis plates and on the prosthesis core. These are designed, for example, as ribs and grooves which run in the median plane.
