  • Patent number: 8331582
Abstract: The invention relates to adaptive directional systems, and more particularly to a method and apparatus for producing adaptive directional signals. The invention may be applied to the provision of audio frequency adaptive directional microphone systems for devices such as hearing aids and mobile telephones. The method involves constructing the adaptive directional signal (46) from a weighted sum of a first signal (42A) having an omni-directional polar pattern and a second signal (42B) having a bi-directional polar pattern, wherein the weights are calculated to give the combined signal a constant gain in a predetermined direction and to minimize the power of the combined signal. The method has particular application in producing signals in digital hearing aids, the predetermined direction being in the forward direction with respect to the wearer.

  • Patent number: 8325082
Abstract: A device and method for wide area surveillance of a geographic region includes identifying a search space associated with a geographic region having a plurality of sub-regions. The search space is divided into a plurality of search cells and observation data is collected for each of the plurality of search cells based on a scan of the geographic region. An event generation rate is calculated for each of the search cells based on the collected observation data. One or more of the sub-regions are identified as a region(s) of interest based on the calculated event generation rates. A coverage pattern is estimated for each of the sub-regions and a desired revisit rate is calculated for the region of interest based on the estimated coverage pattern. The desired revisit rate is then output for scanning the region of interest.

  • Patent number: 8324505
Abstract: The present invention relates to flex cables, and more particularly to a temperature tolerant cover layer construction for a flex cable. In one embodiment, a flex cable designed to be bent to a particular curved shape includes one or more slits formed in the inner cover layer, to reduce the amount of material in the cover layer on the inside radius of the curve. By reducing the amount of cover layer material on the inside of the curve, the slits reduce the compressive stress in the cover layer. The slits are formed prior to laminating the flex cable so that upon lamination the flexible filler material below the cover layer fills the slits, providing a compliant, protective layer that bends into the desired curve and protects the active components inside the cable. The slits reduce the compressive stress along the inside cover layer and thereby prevent the cover layer from separating from the rest of the cable when the flex cable is subjected to high temperature conditions.
