  • Patent number: 8068524
Abstract: A submount for a semiconductor laser. The submount has a layer of silicon carbide (SiC) and a layer of aluminum nitride (AlN) deposited on the layer of SiC. The submount is bonded to the InP-based laser by a hard solder applied to the AlN layer. Preferably, the thickness of the AlN layer is ten to twenty microns, the thickness of the SiC layer is two hundred fifty microns, and the solder is a gold-tin (AuSn) eutectic. The semiconductor laser may be a quantum cascade laser (QCL). Similar combinations of submount materials can be found for other semiconductor laser material systems and types.

  • Patent number: 8066411
Abstract: An LED lighting tube having a first segment, a second segment, and a rotating connector between the segments. Each segment has an elongated cylindrical housing, an aperture in the sidewall of the cylindrical housing, a reflector centered within the aperture, a circuit board within the cylindrical housing, and a rotatable electrical coupling connected to an outer end of the cylindrical housing. The circuit board has an LED that aligns with the aperture. The rotatable electrical coupling has a limiter insert that provides a rotative stop, a collet that at least partially surrounds the limiter insert and is rotatable about the limiter insert, and an interface connector secured to the limiter insert and in electrical communication with the circuit board. The rotatable electrical coupling permits the LED lighting tube to connect to a light fixture while also permitting the cylindrical housing to rotate relative to the light fixture.

  • Patent number: 8061236
Abstract: A bicycle pedal apparatus is provided formed from two identical halves comprising a plurality of holes. A bolt secures the two halves through the holes and projects out beyond the surface of the pedal, thereby performing a dual role of securing the two halves together and serving as a traction mechanism. The pedal bodies rotate about a pedal axle either directly on the axle or on bearings. In embodiments utilizing bearings, two different bearings are used, roller bearings to bear the rotational load and thrust bearings to bear any axial load. The pedal axle can be tapered with a flanged head and resides in a cavity in the pedal body that substantially conforms to the shape of the pedal axle so as to minimize movement of the pedal axle within the pedal body.

  • Patent number: 8034057
Abstract: A cup for a hip replacement is disposed in a first relationship in an operating room with an object providing a sighting for the cup rotation in a first plane. The cup is thereafter rotated in the first plane through a first angle (e.g., 20°-30°). The cup is then disposed in a planar relationship in the operating room with another object providing a sighting for the cup rotation in a second plane transverse (e.g. perpendicular) to the first plane. The cup is subsequently rotated through a second angle (e.g. 40°-45°) in the second plane. In this way, the cup is properly positioned in the acetabulum socket. The length of the leg receiving the hip rotation is then adjusted so that the leg length matches the length of the patient's other leg. This adjustment is provided without affecting the offset position of the center of the ball on the femur.

  • Patent number: 8028536
Abstract: A portable, combination dehydrator, dry return air and condensed water generator/dispenser configured to alternately provide water from a reservoir of condensed water or from an alternative source of water. In one embodiment, the alternative source comprises a five-gallon bottle of water and the mounting for the bottle includes a removable cover for preventing contamination of the system when the bottle is not in place. In one embodiment, the system provides purified dry make-up air to a home or office air conditioning system and dehydration cabinet, while producing pure atmospheric condensation from humidity found in the air and purifying the air and water for breathing, dispensing and drinking purposes.

  • Patent number: 8025669
Abstract: A portable microderm abrasion device is comprised of a hollow housing containing an electric motor that operates an air pump having air suction and air exhaust ports. A hollow, disposable exfoliation grit supply cartridge is removably located within an upper bay, while a separate hollow, disposable waste collection cartridge is also located within a lower bay in the housing directly beneath the grit supply cartridge. The two cartridges are separately removable from the housing. Grit from the supply cartridge is mixed with air drawn by a vacuum created by the air pump into a grit entrainment duct located within the waste collection cartridge and carried to a movable wand. A particulate filter located in the waste collection cartridge allows air, but prevents solid waste material, from being discharged to ambient atmosphere.
