  • Patent number: 6441793
Abstract: An antenna feed system capable of simultaneously transmitting and receiving in multiple frequency bands. In one embodiment, the feed system comprises a non-collimating lens attached to the emitting end of a broad-band antenna feed. The lens is positioned to receive and focus the broad-band wireless signals from any reflector configuration to any antenna feed. It is also positioned to transmit and focus the broad-band wireless signals from any antenna feed to any reflector configuration. A method for illuminating a reflector configuration through an antenna feed with the lens is disclosed. A wireless sensor system is also disclosed. In one embodiment, the non-collimating lens may be used as part of a wireless signal sensor unit used to increase or decrease the angular aperture of the sensor unit.

  • Patent number: 6442067
Abstract: A computer system has a ROM device containing two separately flashed areas. Each area contains a firmware image. From the factory, the two firmware images are identical. Each image also contains the executable code to flash an image area. The ROM also contains a “boot block” sector that makes decisions as to which of the firmware images is the “active” image and which is the “inactive” image. The active image is copied from the ROM to a RAM device and executed from RAM during normal system operation. The inactive image normally is not executed. The boot block sector also contains code that performs a checksum verification on the active image during initialization and, if the checksum fails, switches the active/inactive status of the two firmware images to make the previously inactive image the active image. With two firmware images, the system can recover from a power failure occurring while flashing the ROM because the other firmware image is still available.

  • Patent number: 6442727
Abstract: A method, circuit and apparatus is provided for preserving and/or correcting product engineering information. Non-volatile storage devices reserved for receiving product engineering bits can either be contained in at least three separate storage locations spaced from each other across the integrated circuit or, alternatively, be contained in a single storage location area with error correction bits and/or words added to that location. In the first instance, redundant product engineering bits are written to each storage location. Product engineering bits read from a majority of those locations which have identical values are deemed valid. The addition of extra bits and/or words can be combined with the possibly defective product engineering bits to correct errors in those bits.

  • Patent number: 6437710
Abstract: A communication system is provided for interconnecting a network of digital systems. Each node of the communication system may include a transceiver and an encoder/decoder. The encoder codes an incoming data stream and forwards the encoded data stream across a communication link based on a DC-adaptive encoding mechanism. The encoded data stream is substantially free of a DC value that would skew the detector components at the receiver end of the communication link. Moreover, the encoded signal is forwarded at no greater than the incoming bitstream. Encoding occurs dependent on a digital sum value of the preceding clock cycle (DSVn−1) for the encoded bitstream and the logic values for the incoming bitstream during the current clock cycle n as well as the subsequent clock cycle n+1. Encoding according to normal encoding or multiple-ones encoding is dependent on those values.

  • Patent number: 6434217
Abstract: A system and method are presented for determining the thickness and elemental composition of a layer within a measurement sample in an easy and inexpensive manner. An embodiment of the method includes impinging an incident x-ray beam into an exposed surface of a measurement sample containing one or more layers. The incident x-ray beam passes through the sample and may refract depending on the composition of the layers to produce a transmitted x-ray beam. The intensity and the angle of refraction of the transmitted x-ray beam may then be measured. These measurements may be compared to the results of a calibration sample that has been prepared with a known thickness and composition relative to the layer characteristics of the sample. The intensity of the transmitted x-ray beam is a function of the thickness of the layer; while the angle of refraction is a function of the elemental composition of the layer.

  • Patent number: 6430977
Abstract: An integrated keyslot makes it possible to secure a door key immediately after locking a door. Upon leaving the premises and locking the door, the key is deposited in the keyslot. In an embodiment, a chute connects the keyslot to a receptacle on the interior surface of the door, which retains the key until it can be retrieved by the owner. The method and system described herein are believed to be advantageous in providing greater security to premises. As an example, maintenance personnel could be given a key with which they could visit a home to perform repairs. Immediately upon leaving, they would lock the door and deposit the key in the integrated keyslot, thus protecting the owner against loss or theft of the key.

  • Patent number: 6429762
Abstract: A data communications isolation transformer uses an E—E core structure within an integrated circuit package. Two E-shaped core sections of the transformer fit together to form a core structure having a center portion and two outer portions. The center portion has twice the cross-sectional area of either of the outer portions. About the center portion fits a bobbin upon which a primary winding, a secondary winding and an electromagnetic interference shield are located. The shield lies between the two windings and attenuates common mode noise in the transformer. The shield is grounded to either the “chassis” side or the “logic” side of the apparatus. The shield may be a strip of conductive material, such as copper, or a thin conductive wire wound across the space between the primary winding and the secondary winding.

  • Patent number: 6429783
Abstract: An apparatus and method for indicating the operational status of equipment (“tools”) used in semiconductor fabrication is provided. In one embodiment, the operational status of a tool is indicated by a mechanical sign attached to the tool. The sign contains indications of multiple operational statuses of the tool. The current operational status is indicated by covering the other possible operational statuses. The sign is constructed of materials that are compatible with the semiconductor fabrication environment. In a second embodiment, the operational status of a tool is indicated by illuminating a light. Lights for indicating possible operational statuses of the tool are attached to the tool. The lights may by illuminated by depressing a switch. Alternatively, the illumination of the lights may be controlled by a computer that also controls the operation of the tool. The computer may also cause an indication of the tool's operational status to be indicated on a monitor attached to the tool.

  • Patent number: 6430718
Abstract: Architecture, circuitry, and methods are provided for testing one or more integrated circuits which may be arranged upon a printed circuit board. The integrated circuits include sequential and combinatorial logic used by the integrated circuit during normal functioning thereof. Testing of that logic can occur by sending test vectors in parallel or serial form to input pins of the integrated circuit. The test results can either be read as a serial data stream or as a parallel-delivered data stream. If the test information and results occur in parallel fashion, than automated test equipment can be used which do not require compliance with having a single serial fed test vector input and test result output, normally found in a TAP application. A parallel/serial multiplexer is used to select whether the integrated circuit receives parallel or serial test vectors, and another parallel/serial multiplexer is used to select whether the test results are to be delivered in parallel or serial fashion.

  • Patent number: 6430456
Abstract: A method, system, and storage medium for increasing the efficiency of integrated circuit (IC) manufacture by improvements in manufacturing equipment usage are provided. Process tools are assigned to one of three operating states: up, down, or conditional. In the up state, process tools are available for manufacturing. After certain manufacturing steps, the quality of the ICs being made upon wafers is evaluated. If potentially defective ICs are found, process tools that have processed the wafer may be placed in the conditional state. In this state, process tools are allowed to continue manufacturing, albeit only for a limited period. The conditional state gives personnel time to determine which process tool is responsible for the defective product. The responsible process tool is then placed in the down state while all others are placed back in the up state. Once the problem with the process tool in the down state is presumably repaired, it is placed in the conditional state.
