  • Patent number: 4604177
Abstract: A cell for producing magnesium or other metal by electrolysis of molten chloride or other electrolyte comprises at least one electrode assembly of an anode 24, at least one intermediate bipolar electrode 28, 30, 32, 34 and a cathode 26 defining generally vertical interelectrode spaces between them. To minimize current leakage, the intermediate bipolar electrodes preferably almost completely surround the anode including the edges and the bottom. In operation, a metal/electrolyte mixture is swept up the interelectrode spaces by generated chlorine gas and spills out over the cathode into a duct 20 behind the cathode, the duct including a restricted passage 58 for degassing and an inverted channel 62 to collect product metal and convey it to a metal collection chamber 18.The electrolyte surface is preferably maintained at about the level of the top edges of the intermediate bipolar electrodes by means of a level control device 22 submerged in electrolyte in the metal collection chamber.

  • Patent number: 4598301
Abstract: A thermal printer for printing characters or the like on a recording medium, heat-sensitive paper or plain paper, by a thermal printhead which is mounted on a carriage movable along the recording medium in a reciprocating manner is provided. The printhead is pressed against the recording medium while the carriage is moving in a printing direction and the printhead is kept away from the recording medium while the carriage is moving in a returning direction opposite to the printing direction. A cassette containing therein heat-sensitive ink ribbon is substantially elongated in shape and it bridges between a pair of side plates forming part of a frame of the printer when detachably mounted in position. The cassette is provided with a supply port at one end and a take-up port at the opposite end and thus the ribbon is lead outside through the supply port and lead inside through the take-up port. And the ribbon is taken up in association with the returning motion of the carriage.

  • Patent number: 4594599
Abstract: An image recording method capable of allowing an optical scan type electrophotographic recording apparatus to record images with a high resolution. The pulse width of video data adapted to modulate a light beam is varied. An optimum light beam scanning condition is provided which causes the pulse width of binary video data to be controlled to suitably vary the power of an exposing beam such that a latent image potential difference at a boundary between an image portion and a non-image portion is increased to enhance electrostatic contrast, thereby recording images with a high resolution. In an optical scan type electrophotographic recording apparatus of the type using minute light emitting segments as a light source, a latent image is formed with high electrostatic contrast. A light beam condition and a light beam scanning condition are provided which makes the pixel diameters of an image to be developed in the main scan and subscan directions equal to each other.

  • Patent number: 4594691
Abstract: Disclosed is sonic well logging which gives good results both in open and in cased boreholes. New use is made of the energy content output from a multireceiver tool to find a coherence measure for the received sonic energy and to find the peaks of that coherence measure at each depth level so as to produce a number of new logs of parameters of those peaks. Examples are a slowness/time coherence log for those peaks, as well as new logs related to the arrival times of the coherent energy associated with the peaks and the energy attenuation for those arrival times.

  • Patent number: 4592820
Abstract: In conventional electrolytic cells for aluminium production, heat loss through the side walls is necessary to cause the formation of a protective layer of solid electrolyte. In this invention, the side walls are lined with a ceramic material, e.g. titanium diboride, resistant to the electrolyte and to molten aluminium. Thermal insulation is provided such that a layer of solid electrolyte is not present during normal operation of the cell. A cathode current collection system is provided such that the horizontal lateral currents in the cathode are insignificant compared with the vertical current.

  • Patent number: 4590167
Abstract: Thin-layer chromatography is employed to separate enantiomers of the general formula, ##STR1## in which C* represents an asymmetric center and the substituents R.sup.1, R.sup.2, and R.sup.3 are such that they supply the structural element ##STR2## for .alpha.-amino- or .alpha.-iminocarboxylic acids, particularly the well-known .alpha.-amino- or .alpha.-iminocarboxylic or for derivatives of such carboxylic acids, either of which contains no free thiol groups. In the thin-layer chromatographic separation operation a TLC plate is used which is coated with silica gel hydrophobicized by a silane derivative and which is further impregnated with an ionic compound of a divalent transition metal and a chiral selector. The mobile phase employed is a ternary mixture of a water-miscible alkanol, such as methanol, water, and acetonitrile, or a quaternary mixture of the latter ternary mixture to which a water-miscible cyclic ether, such as tetrahydrofuran, has been added.

  • Patent number: 4586587
Abstract: The present invention controls the braking of an elevator by reversing its driver motor. The real time speed of the elevator is compared with a theoretical value to generate a signal for controlling the braking power of the motor. The theoretical value is determined exclusively from a preset table on the basis of the remaining distance to the floor level. The remaining distance and real time speed data is obtained from a single transducer consisting of a perforated disc coupled to the motor shaft and an optoelectronic circuit which emits a pulse for each certain distance travelled by the elevator.
