  • Patent number: 4637842
Abstract: A process for producing Al-Mg-Si alloy sheet in T8 temper, including the steps of providing a sheet article of an intermediate gauge, solution heat treating the article, naturally aging the article for at least one day, cold rolling the article to final gauge, and artificially aging it, wherein the artificial aging step is performed by heating the cold rolled sheet at final gauge to a predetermined temperature for a time shorter than that at which maximum yield strength would be achieved. The intermediate gauge is selected such that a reduction between about 25% and about 71% therefrom is required to achieve the final gauge. The T8 sheet is characterized by strength and formability properties suitable for production of one piece drawn and ironed can bodies and lids therefor, and for other purposes.

  • Patent number: 4635488
Abstract: A body fluid sampling device including a hollow tube with a solid, porous, water-wettable nonfibrous nib mounted in and protruding from one end of the tube for collecting, by absorption, a sample of a body fluid such as sweat, tears, or saliva. The sample may be extracted from the nib for analysis by supplying an extraction fluid to the interior of the tube for gravity or vacuum-assisted flow out through the nib. Alternatively, an elongated analysis element such as a strip of paper or a packed column, e.g. containing an agent that changes appearance to indicate the presence of a substance to be detected, may be disposed in the tube for endwise contact with the nib to receive the sample (or components thereof) by absorption.

  • Patent number: 4636625
Abstract: Less than half of a laser beam reflected from an optical information storage medium through an objective lens is detected by a detector having two light detecting areas. The sum of output signals from the light detecting areas of the detector is employed to detect when the objective lenas enters a focusing range. The difference between the output signals is employed to detect when the laser beam is focused on the optical information storage medium.

  • Patent number: 4635178
Abstract: Disclosed is a system of paralleled switching power supplies designed and controlled to have substantially identical output voltages and impedances so as to share the load equally. The output voltage of each supply is controlled to decrease linearly with increased output current, and the individual power supplies and their control circuits are designed and controlled to behave as identically as possible under the expected service conditions such that, under any given set of conditions, the output voltages and impedances of the several individual power supplies can be expected to be substantially identical and therefore they can be expected to share the load substantially equally. Provisions are made to make the control of the individual power supplies substantially independent of variations in the resistance of the power cables connecting them to the common load.

  • Patent number: 4634966
Abstract: A frequency spectral distribution of sound signal has a plurality of discrete data at respective channels where sampling takes place. Such a spectral distribution, defining a parallel signal, is converted into a time series signal which is used to produce a peak-detected signal and a zero-cross signal. Then, based on the timing of the zero-cross signal, the peak-detected signal is compared with the original parallel signal to process the original parallel signal to be binary-valued. The present invention provides a simple hardware structure having the above-described function.

  • Patent number: 4632292
Abstract: A method is described for joining an inner metal pipe with an outer surrounding metal tubular portion by means of explosive welding in which a contact anvil is placed inside the inner pipe to support it during welding. With the anvil in place, the pipes are subjected to explosive welding such that the outer surface of the inner pipe is joined metallurgically to the inner surface of the outer tubular portion. According to the novel feature, the anvil is made from hydrated aluminum sulphate, preferably a water soluble commercial alum, which not only disintegrates during welding but is also water soluble.
