Patent number: 4529910Abstract: A high-performance electron gun is disclosed capable of forming an ultra-small beam spot. The gun has a series of apertured electrodes of various dimension for receiving a range of electrical potentials for forming the beam spot on a cathodoluminescent screen located a predetermined throw distance from the end of the gun. Because of its capability in forming relatively small spot sizes of the order of ten mils or less, the gun finds application in high-resolution monitors, projection television tubes and in cathode ray tubes operating on the beam index principle.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 1982Date of Patent: July 16, 1985Assignee: Zenith Electronics CorporationInventors: Khem K. Patent number: 4498028Abstract: An ultra-short high-performance LoBi electron gun is disclosed for use in very short cathode ray tubes. The gun comprises lower end means having a cathode for developing an electron beam, at least one apertured plate grid electrode for forming the beam in conjunction with the cathode, and at least one apertured plate prefocusing electrode for developing a crossover in the beam in conjunction with the grid electrode. The gun also comprises a main focus lens means for receiving, focusing and accelerating the beam. The lens means includes cylindrical focusing electrode means for focusing a beam spot of minimum size on the screen. The spacing between the focusing electrode and the prefocusing electrode, and the relative difference in potential therebetween, is effective to develop a weak electrostatic field for forming a steeply expanding beam, while cylindrical accelerating electrode means provides for accelerating the beam.Type: GrantFiled: September 28, 1981Date of Patent: February 5, 1985Assignee: Zenith Electronics CorporationInventor: Richard M. Patent number: 4475057Abstract: An article of manufacture is disclosed comprising a cathode ray tube having a glass face panel with a cathodoluminescent screen on the inner surface thereof. The screen has a phosphor constituent vulnerable to patterned discoloring known as character burn. Character burn is caused by static area electron bombardment of such time and intensity as to discolor the phosphor, but not appreciably degrade phosphor efficiency. The tube according to the invention is characterized by having a conditioned screen uniformly burn-discolored throughout at least in the visible portion of the screen to render substantially imperceptible patterned character burn resulting from use. A process is also disclosed for use in the manufacture of cathode ray tubes and display monitors, and the reclamation of character-burned cathode ray tubes to render character burn substantially imperceptible.Type: GrantFiled: December 28, 1981Date of Patent: October 2, 1984Assignee: Zenith Electronics CorporationInventor: Thomas J. Patent number: 4471389Abstract: A pulse interference detector is disclosed for use in a capacitance electronic disc player (CED). A relatively short-duration, high-amplitude periodic interference pulse, such as a radar pulse, is detected. The video carrier signal of the CED has a first envelope aberration in the form of a relatively long peak-to-peak duration amplitude modulation component, and a second envelope aberration in the form of the interference pulse. The CED incudes a defect corrector for inserting, when triggered, preceding unblemished display line information into a current display line void. The pulse interference detector receives and processes the video carrier signal and also detects the interfering radar pulse. The detector comprises a first signal path responsive only to the amplitude modulation component, and includes a resistor-capacitor network for producing a reference component substantially representing an average of the envelope excursion of the component.Type: GrantFiled: March 1, 1982Date of Patent: September 11, 1984Assignee: Zenith Electronics CorporationInventor: Michael Tentler

Patent number: 4469987Abstract: A high-resolution color television electron gun is disclosed for use in a high-brightness cathode ray tube having an unsegmented cathodoluminescent screen for producing a monochromatic image. The electron gun provides three horizontally oriented in-line beams lying in the deflection plane of the tube and converged into substantial coincidence on the screen. The diameters of the beams and hence resolution of the monochromatic image is inversely related to the magnitude of the beam currents. The gun includes associated cathode means and grid electrode means for forming each of the beams. A main focus lens for each of the beams includes at least a focusing electrode and an accelerating electrode for receiving a predetermined pattern of applied voltages for establishing beam-forming and accelerating electrostatic fields. The magnitude of the applied voltages are such that the beam currents are relatively low providing for small beam diameters and consequent high resolution.Type: GrantFiled: October 23, 1981Date of Patent: September 4, 1984Assignee: Zenith Electronics CorporationInventors: Allen P. Blacker, Khem K. S. Garewal

Patent number: 4193120Abstract: An addressable event display and control system for use with a clock controlled programmable memory employs an array of LED's as event designators each of which signifies, when energized, a programmed event in the memory. A bank of seven dual LED's, which is coupled to the memory, is selectively energizable to visually indicate a particular day of the week. When a particular day is selected, the array of designators for that day can be interrogated to determine which of the designators have been programmed for the particular day. Thereafter, a desired one of the designators can be selected to afford review of the program content of the event associated with that designator. The selected event designator is identified by a blinking visual signal. The time of day, a channel and a recording duration time are selectable to identify a particular event and that information is programmable into the memory for subsequent retrieval to control a video frequency recorder in accordance with such information.Type: GrantFiled: September 13, 1978Date of Patent: March 11, 1980Assignee: Zenith Radio CorporationInventor: Joseph F. Patent number: 4193090Abstract: The present invention relates in general to an optical video detection system for retrieving recorded information. More particularly, the invention relates to an optical detection system whereby optical means focus a laser beam into a reading spot of an area sufficient to interrogate, simultaneously, a plurality of the light scattering elements in at least two adjacent segments of the spiral track. The reading spot further has a dimension in the longitudinal direction of the track such that the spot is incapable of resolving the recorded carrier. Since the information content of adjacent tracks is substantially the same, averaging of the nonscattered light by a photodetector will provide a useful replica of the baseband signal, that is the video signal, modulated upon the carrier.Type: GrantFiled: August 15, 1977Date of Patent: March 11, 1980Assignee: Zenith Radio CorporationInventor: Adrianus Korpel

Patent number: 4142098Abstract: The invention concerns an optical detection system for retrieving information stored in a record track which effectively constitutes a sequence of light scattering or light deflecting elements. An objective lens, disposed above the record track, forms a reading spot for interrogating the track as it is moved past the spot. A photodetector, also disposed above the track, is located in the far field of the reading spot and outside the cone of focused light established by the lens in forming that spot to monitor the time-varying diffraction pattern of the spot reflected from the interrogated portion of the track. Upon receipt of scattered or reflected light rays, the photodetector derives an electrical signal representative of the stored information.Type: GrantFiled: July 5, 1977Date of Patent: February 27, 1979Assignee: Zenith Radio CorporationInventor: Adrianus Korpel

Patent number: 4100576Abstract: An optical beam controller for use in an image reproducing system, in which information is stored in the spiral track of a disc record and retrieved by scanning the track with a light beam, comprises first and second ring-shaped axially poled magnets. The second magnet has a pivot bearing and is supported upon a pin coaxially with and in such proximity to the first magnet as to be mechanically captivated upon the pin by that magnet while remaining free for tilting displacement with respect to a pair of orthogonal axes. A mirror is coupled to the second magnet for concurrent displacement therewith when an energized electromagnet, which reacts with the field of the second magnet, effects a desired displacement of that magnet and the mirror about one or both axes.Type: GrantFiled: April 28, 1976Date of Patent: July 11, 1978Assignee: Zenith Radio CorporationInventor: Alfred R.
