Abstract: Two- and three-terminal ternary III-V two-color and three-color solar cells which incorporate GaAs.sub.1-x-y P.sub.x Sb.sub.y transparent window layers are described. The window layers lower the surface recombination of the incident homojunction layer.
Abstract: Paraffins having a carbon number in excess of 10 are converted to aromatics, such as n-alkylbenzenes, over a dehydrocyclization catalyst comprising a large-pore zeolite containing at least one Group VIII metal. This process is carried out at a pressure of less than 100 psig. The dehydrocyclization catalyst can contain an alkaline earth metal selected from the group consisting of barium, strontium, and calcium. Preferably, the dehydrocyclization catalyst has from 8 to 10 percent by weight barium and from 0.2 to 1.0 percent by weight platinum, and the large-pore zeolite is a type L zeolite.
Abstract: Method and means are provided for determining the position of a submerged marine streamer towed behind an exploration vessel. An array of at least three transponders secured to the ocean floor generate distinguishable acoustic pulses upon a command signal from the ship. These signals are received by hydrophones housed in the streamer and by the ship. The distance to each hydrophone may be triangulated from the data generated including accounting for changes in velocity between the vessel and the seismic streamer and the bottom transponders during the taking of such data.
Abstract: A weir-type skimmer employing a wave diffuser for efficiently collecting an immiscible liquid from the surface of a body of higher density liquid in turbulent waters, including in combination: a floating containment boom having a wave diffuser disposed therein and a catch basin coupled therewith; a catch basin having a self-adjusting weir for regulating the flow of liquid therein; a water pump for removing and discharging water from the catch basin to the interior of the floating containment boom, forward of the wave diffuser; and an oil pump coupled with a skimming head for removing oil from the catch basin.
Abstract: A stable hydrocarbyl-substituted succinic anhydride/polyethyleneoxy-containing ether-ester emulsifier composition. There is also disclosed a method for imparting water repellency to surfaces containing groups reactive to anhydrides and a method for the sizing of paper using said composition.
Abstract: A stable composition comprising a hydrocarbyl-substituted succinic anhydride and a polyethylene glycol diester emulsifier. There is also disclosed a method for imparting water repellency to surfaces containing groups reactive to anhydrides and a method for the sizing of paper using said composition.
Abstract: Compounds of the formula: ##STR1## wherein X is oxygen or sulfur;R is pyridyl optionally substituted with 1 to 3 substituents independently selected from halogen, lower alkyl or lower alkoxy optionally substituted with 1 to 3 of the same or different halogen atoms or nitro, R.sup.1 is lower alkyl; and R.sup.2 is a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic ring containing 1- to 3-ring nitrogens and the remainder of the ring atoms carbon atoms, a quinoline ring or a phenyl ring, all optionally substituted with 1 to 3 substituents independently selected from halogen, trihalomethyl, lower alkyl or lower alkoxy, provided that R.sup.2 is not bonded to the --CH.sub.2 -- group by a ring nitrogen and compatible salts thereof, are fungicidal.
Abstract: A process for purifying predominantly straight chain olefins having from 5 to 50 carbon atoms which comprises contacting the olefins with a liquid solution of boron trifluoride in an alcohol or mixture of alcohols.
Abstract: The anti-wear properties of lubricating oil compositions containing overbased calcium sulfonate are improved when a metal diisopropyl dithiophosphate-succinimide complex is added to the oil. Oil compositions containing this combination are useful as crankcase lubricants.
Abstract: A method is disclosed for solvent-extracting an extractable component from a mixture including the extractable component and subdivided solids, comprising:(a) maintaining a vertically extending bed comprising said solids in a vertically extending extraction zone and introducing said mixture into an upper portion of said bed;(b) providing a substantially continuous gaseous phase in contact with a lower portion of said bed;(c) maintaining a substantially continuous liquid phase comprising a vaporizable liquid solvent in contact with at least a lower part of an upper portion of said bed;(d) introducing said solvent into said liquid phase at at least two vertically spaced levels of said liquid phase;(e) extracting said extractable component from said mixture with said solvent;(f) withdrawing said solvent and said extractable component from said liquid phase between said two vertically spaced levels;(g) preventing said liquid phase from flowing downwardly through said lower portion of said bed by maintaining said
Abstract: Disclosed is a lubricant composition containing an oil of lubricating viscosity having dispersed therein a particulate hydrated alkali-metal borate and an effective amount oil soluble phosphate and/or monothiophosphate compound which stabilizes the composition against the adverse effects of water contamination. The weight ratio of phosphorus from phosphates and monothiophosphates to boron in the lubricant must be greater than 0.014.
Abstract: A method is disclosed for altering the permeability of a gravity override path through a subsurface earth formation resulting from hot fluid (steam) injection into the subsurface formation. The method includes adding selected sized particulate material to a foam and injecting the foam into the gravity override path to deposit the particulate material thus altering the permeability in the path. The method may include the use of a noncondensible gas in the foam as well as a variety of combinations of the hot fluid injection and foam plus particulate material injection to maximize the sweep efficiency of the hot fluid injection into the subsurface formation.
