  • Patent number: 4421266
Abstract: Bodies (22) containing bonding material are applied in a substantially simultaneous manner to each of an array of bonding sites (18). A member (50) holds the bodies (22) in an array corresponding to the array of bonding sites (18). A pickup head (40) holds an array of pickup pins (42) such that pickup ends thereof correspond to the array of bodies (22) and sites (18). A mechanism (31) manipulates the head (40) and the array of pins (42) in steps, to substantially simultaneously engage each of the bodies (22) in the member (50) with a corresponding pickup end of a pin (42), to substantially simultaneously contact each of the bodies (22) to a corresponding bonding site (18) and to substantially simultaneously disengage the pins (42) from the bodies (22). In a preferred embodiment, the bodies (22) contain solder which is readily conductive and frictionally engageable by pressure of the pins (42) upon the bodies (22).

  • Patent number: 4395219
Abstract: In the growth of gadolinium gallium garnet monocrystals, a crucible is charged with a preformed body (65) of oxide powders to form a melt. In preparation therefor, the oxide powders are formulated into a typical particulate material (16) which is compacted into a body (65) having a desired size and shape. For holding material (16), there is provided a pouch (38) of a first size having elastic walls expandable to a second size, larger than body (65). The pouch (38) is disposed within a chamber (36) having inside walls conforming to the desired shape of the body (65) but of the second size. An open neck (42) of the pouch (38) extends through and is sealed to an opening (60) in chamber (36). Then a vacuum is drawn between the pouch (38) and chamber (36) to expand pouch (38) to said shape and second size formed by the chamber walls. As the particulate material (16) is introduced into the expanded pouch (38), such material conforms to the shape and second size of such expanded pouch.

  • Patent number: 4394602
Abstract: An enclosed electrical device (42) includes an electrical circuit (50) having elements (48-68) which lie substantially in and along a plane (115). A member (70) is applied to a one side and a member (85) is applied to another side of the circuit (50) for at least partially enclosing the same. Conductors (48) and (49) of circuit (50) are fixedly penetrated, preferably by pins (74) which are fixedly engaged to enclosure members (70) and (85). Such engagement is advantageously provided by making the pins (74) an integral part of member (70), for example by including pins (74) in a premolded member (70). Such engagement is also advantageously provided by making pin-engaging sockets (94) an integral part of member (85), also for example by including the sockets (94) in a premolded member (85). By a preferred friction fit of pins (74) and sockets (94), the enclosure members (70) and (85 ) and circuit elements (48-68) are sufficiently fixed relative to one another to resist forces applied thereto in service.

  • Patent number: 4384658
Abstract: Magnetic articles (10) are advanced in single file within a tube (14) for dispensing therefrom. A first magnetic device (20) establishes a magnetic field to releasably seize the leading article (10) such that trailing articles (10) are stopped in the tube (14). A second magnetic device (22) operates at a fixed location along the tube (14) and establishes a magnetic field to releasably seize the next trailing article (10) in the tube (14). A mechanism (40) then indexes the device (20) with the seized, leading article (10) a sufficient distance away from attraction of the second device (20) such that, when the leading article (10) is released by device (20), it is also released from tube (14).

  • Patent number: 4380734
Abstract: The magnetic intensity in a succession of strips (12) in an article (10) is measured by producing relative motion between the article (10) and a magnetic sensing head (23) to produce a succession of first voltage waveforms. Each such waveform has a shape substantially characterized by the positions of the poles (13 and 14) in a respective strip (12). Each incremental portion of the shape has an amplitude proportional to the magnetic intensity sensed along the surface of the strip (12) and to the instantaneous speed of the relative motion between the sensing head (23) and such surface. By coupling a generator (31) to the article (10), a second voltage waveform is produced having a shape for each strip, wherein each incremental portion has an amplitude proportional to an instantaneous speed equivalent to the speed producing the first voltage waveform for the respective strip (12).
