  • Patent number: 7567781
Abstract: A method and apparatus for transmitter re-initialization in a wireless communication system (10). When the communication link between a mobile station (38) and a base station (32) is in trouble, the mobile station and the infrastructure prearrange potential rescue base stations (34). The mobile station (38) disables the transmitter during the rescue process. On recovery the transmit power level of the transmitter is incremented for transmission of the pilot strength measurement message until a hand-off direction message is received. The transmit power level is incremented to a maximum value.

  • Patent number: 7564775
Abstract: A spread-spectrum communication system provides an effective signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of received orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM) slots in the presence of timing errors. Effective SNR can serve as a diagnostic tool for determining whether there was a timing error when a measured packet error rate (PER) remains high, and a predicted PER from the effective SNR remains low. A loop can use the effective SNR to control a time reference used by an OFDM decoder.

  • Patent number: 7564794
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for waveform quality measurement are disclosed. An actual signal, representing a waveform channelized both in time and in code is generated by, e.g., an exemplary HDR communication system. Test equipment generates an ideal waveform corresponding to the actual waveform. The test equipment then generates an estimate of offsets between parameters of the actual waveform and the ideal waveform, and the offsets are used to compensate the actual waveform. The test equipment then evaluates various waveform quality measurements utilizing the compensated actual waveform and the corresponding ideal waveform. Definitions of the various waveform quality measurements as well as conceptual and practical examples of processing of the actual waveform and the corresponding ideal waveform by the test equipment are disclosed. The disclosed method and apparatus may be extended to any waveform channelized both in time and in code regardless of the equipment that generated the waveform.

  • Patent number: 7548509
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are presented for acknowledging broadcast transmissions. An acknowledgment channel is designed for acknowledging the success or failure of a transmission on a dedicated channel and on a broadcast channel. Acknowledgments are generated based on whether a new orthogonal space is sent to a remote station or not. Moreover, an acknowledgment to the broadcast transmission is generated when an acknowledgment is needed for a dedicated transmission. The two acknowledgments are combined and sent to a base station.

  • Patent number: 7508778
Abstract: A system and method for adjusting quality of service in a communication system improves an allocation of resources in a communications environment with shared resources among multiple communicating stations by adjusting quality of service levels based on characteristics of the communicating stations. In a disclosed embodiment, a base station (130) communicates with one or more remote stations (110a, 110b). Quality of service levels for communications between the base station and a remote station 110 are adjusted based on a characteristic of the remote station. In this way, a lower quality remote station can be allocated a lower quality of service level than that allocated to a higher quality remote station, thereby preventing an inefficient allocation of shared resources and improving overall system performance.

  • Patent number: 7454174
Abstract: A method for estimating a size of reverse link resources provided by a base-station transceiver system (BTS), including performing respective first, second, and third measurements of first, second, and third signal strengths received at the BTS. The method also includes comparing the first measurement with the second measurement so as to determine an initial minimum signal strength, and adding at a predetermined time an aging value to the initial minimum signal strength so as to from an updated minimum signal strength. The method further includes forming a comparison between the updated minimum signal strength and the third measurement, determining from the comparison a minimum of the updated minimum signal strength and the third measurement to be a minimum received signal strength, and determining the size of the reverse link resources provided by the BTS in response to the minimum received signal strength.

  • Patent number: 7440426
Abstract: A detector is used to sample of set of power measurements of a receive signal. The receive signal may comprise one or more signals from remote users as well as interference. A variance of the set of power measurements is also determined. The variance is compared to an overload threshold value. If the variance exceeds the overload threshold value, for some period of time, the system is declared to be operating at a potentially unstable point. In this state, future connection originations are denied.

  • Patent number: 7411930
Abstract: In a multi-carrier access terminal having a transmitter with a single power amplifier, maximum transmission power available for a multi-carrier signal transmitted by the terminal is apportioned among a plurality of carriers on a priority basis. Following apportionment, the carriers are combined into a multi-carrier signal, amplified by the power amplifier and transmitted.

  • Patent number: 7286830
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for scheduling grant channels to carry grant messages to a plurality of scheduled mobile stations. The scheduling of grant channels involves dynamically assigning to a current mobile station of the plurality of scheduled mobile stations, a previously unassigned grant channel from a list of grant channels monitored by the current mobile station. If there are more mobile stations to be processed in the plurality of scheduled mobile stations, then the scheduling moves to a next mobile station in the plurality of scheduled mobile stations, and the assignment process is repeated. Furthermore, if not every grant channel has been assigned a mobile station, then the order of the plurality of scheduled mobile stations is rearranged, and the assignment and the movement processes are repeated.
