Abstract: According to this invention a flexible razor head is provided which features a flexible cap and blade support portion with the blade support portion featuring a segmented guard bar with the spaces separating the segment correlating to the spaces or areas of reduced thickness in the cap. Corrugations present in the blade support portions enable the blade support portion to lengthen in response to shaving forces.

Abstract: According to this invention a medicament containing gum having improved delivery properties is produced by utilizing a chewing gum composition having a moisture content not greater than 0.3% by weight which softens at 40.degree. C. to 60.degree. C. and has an equilibrium relative humidity lower than the ambient relative humidity as produced and combined with a powdered, insoluble medicament which has been co-spray dried with sugar.

Abstract: A multi-layered chewing gum composition is disclosed. The composition has a moisture content of less than about 1% by weight of the composition and contains at least two layers each comprising a chewing gum composition. The chewing gum compositions of each layer comprise gum base in an amount of about 15 to about 60% by weight of the layer such that the difference in gum base content between the layers is about 3 to about 15% by weight. The chewing gum compositions of each layer also comprise sweeteners, flavors, and optionally, at least one other conventional chewing gum additive.

Abstract: The chlorosucrose sweetener known as sucralose is prepared in a thermally stable composition by co-crystallization with a cyclodextrin. The resulting crystalline product may be comminuted to form particles of desired size for use as a sweetener component in place of or in addition to known sweeteners such as sucrose, saccharin and the like, in a variety of foods, comestibles, and oral medications. The preparation of the stabilized sucralose compositions of the present invention constitutes a molecular encapsulation of the sucralose within the cyclodextrin thereby protecting the sucralose from discoloration caused by heat. Numerous applications for this stabilized complex are suggested and disclosed.

Abstract: The present invention pertains to a sugarless, substantially anhydrous chewing gum composition which comprises a gum base, a non-hygroscopic bulking agent comprising a racemic mixture of alpha-D-glucopyranosyl-1,6-mannitol and alpha-D-glucopyranosyl-1,6-sorbitol, a softening agent, and a sweetening agent. The gum composition preferably contains no more than about 2.5% water, by weight of the total chewing gum composition. The sugarless, substantially anhydrous chewing gum compositions may be used in a variety of chewing gum products. The present invention also pertains to methods for preparing the sugarless, substantially anhydrous chewing gum compositions and the chewing gum products in which they may be used.

Abstract: The present invention pertains to a synergistic sweetening composition having a delayed and enhanced sweetness effect which comprises an intense sweetening agent such as a chlorodeoxysugar derivative and a bulking agent comprising at least about 50% maltitol. The synergistic sweetening composition may be used in a wide variety of ingestible products such as hard and soft confections, chewing gum compositions and the like. The present invention also pertains to methods for preparing the synergistic sweetening compositions and the ingestible products in which they may be used.

Abstract: Chewing gum compositions resistant to moisture pickup and hardening and having a moisture content less than about 1.0% and preferably less than about 0.3% by weight of the final composition, including a hard or a soft gum base, flavoring agent, sweetening agent, and a hydrophobic softening agent. The present composition may be formed without cooling and does not require conditioning prior to wrapping. Prior to wrapping the gum pieces may be coated with a sweetening agent in the known manner at ambient temperatures and up to 80% relative humidity.

Abstract: According to this invention a composite razor handle having a rigid inner core of thermoplastic material and a moldable flexible resilient covering layer is provided. This flexible convering layer because of its flexibility, compressibility and initial deformability provides a comfortable secure surface for the razor user. The handle of this invention, due to its bicomponent nature, provides a limit for compressibility as well as the compressive resilience desirable by many users.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming a center-filled confectionary rope having a soft candy center. The apparatus of the invention includes a forming nose over which a rectangular sheet of candy is passed to form a continuous, hollow, substantially cylindrical outer layer of candy. A frustoconical extruder attached to the lower surface of the forming nose is provided for extruding a soft candy. A frustoconical extruder attached to the lower surface of the forming nose is provided for extruding a soft candy into the hollow portion of the cylindrical outer layer of candy as it is being formed by the forming nose. The combination of candy exterior and soft candy center is then passed through a forming chute which imparts to the confectionary a desired cross-sectional geometry.

Abstract: An ingestible gel confectionary delivery system which includes a pectin gel component in an amount sufficient to form a gel confectionary unit, and an edible insoluble solid in an amount sufficient to strengthen the internal pectin gel network and to bind internal moisture sufficiently to enhance mold removal capabilities. Preferably the delivery system also includes a further active ingredient such as a drug, medicament, or nutritional supplement. The product and method of the present invention also includes a composition in which the gel delivery system can be molded directly in the receptacle which is used to dispense the confectionary unit to the consumer. This significantly enhances the manufacture of product prepared in accordance with the invention.

Abstract: A process for purifying polydextrose to remove contaminants remaining from manufacturing sufficient to provide an organoleptically-acceptable polydextrose ingredient for foodstuffs which includes intimately contacting an aqueous solution of polydextrose having a concentration of from about 10% to about 50% with a polar organic solvent in a ratio of polydextgrose solvent of from about 5-15 of polydextrose to about 45-75 by weight of solvent. Furthermore, the mixture is allowed to equilibrate to form a substantially contaminant-containing fraction and a substantially polydextrose-containing fraction, followed by separating the fractions for use of the polydextrose-containing fraction. The present invention further includes compositions of foodstuffs including the purified polydextrose.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for sealing gelatin capsules having cylindrical cap and body portions arranged in telescoping relationship to contain a medicament therein comprising a capsule-sealing machine for continuously conveying capsules from a supply hopper to a capsule-rectification station wherein the capsules are reoriented and delivered in endwise, cap-down abutment to capsule-wetting stations where a suitable sealing liquid is applied to the capsules at the seams of their cap and body portions to be located between the overlapping side walls of the cap and body portions of the capsules, and wherein the capsules are conveyed from their wetting stations in peripheral pockets of a rotating drum dryer to a capsule heating and sealing section where the capsules are heated by convection and conduction to seal the cap and body portions.

Abstract: An apparatus and process for forming a center-filled confectionary rope in which the center candy is a candy which, during the forming process, is too viscous to be pumped. A center candy is obtained and formed into a continuous cylindrical shape. This is done by using a feeding miller which extracts from the viscous center candy mass a continuous flow of candy. This continuous flow of candy is introduced into a batch roller which forms the continuous flow of candy into a continuous cylindrical shape. An exterior candy mass is obtained and formed into a continuous rectangular shape. This is accomplished by placing the exterior candy mass in a feeding miller which extracts a continuous flow of the exterior candy mass in the form of a rectangular cross section. The continuous rectangularly shaped exterior candy mass is then attached to the continuous cylindrically shaped viscous candy mass and wrapped around the cylindrical center candy in a helical fashion.

The coating comprises an emulsifier, an edible fatty acid or wax and a glyceride. The resulting delivery system provides improved up front sweetness delivery combined with improved thermal stability and corresponding versatility of end use.

Abstract: Methods are disclosed for the sealing of gelatin capsules having hard shell coaxial cap and body parts which overlap when telescopically joined. Also described are apparatus and sealing fluids to seal the capsules.
