Medical items are enabled to be taken from a plurality of storage cabinets (878). Storage cabinets are operative so that users may be guided to find a selected medical item for which corresponding information is input at an associated display terminal. Alternatively, users are enabled to gain access to the interior of the cabinet and indicate through appropriate inputs, the types and quantities of items that are being taken.

The process of qualifying the merchant and configuring the machine may be automated to facilitate installation and operation of the machine by the machine provider for the merchant.

    Abstract: A dual machining clutch apparatus (10) for a multiple spindle machine has at least two stations (20) for holding work pieces (22, 23). A first machining tool (24) is guided on a first slide (26). A controller (34) is notified that the earlier of the first or second machining tool has reached its selected position for completion of its machining operation. The respective machining clutch is de-energized, allowing its shaft to free-wheel. The later machining tool continues to perform its machining operation. As the later machining tool reaches its selected position for completion, the threading clutch for the earlier machining tool is engaged and the high speed clutch is engaged. The machining tools are then backed off the work piece to return to their original positions. The machining operation is complete and the main drum may index.

The monitor apparatus is operative to identify seam fault conditions and to store data concerning seamer conditions. The monitor apparatus also operates a can ejector (26) to divert cans identified as having defective seams.

The machine can then selectively recover documents from storage and dispense them to other users. Identification devices can identify the type and character of a document, and distinguish genuine documents, such as genuine currency bills, from unidentifiable or suspect documents. Each received document can be judged as either acceptable or unacceptable. Output related to the judging can be presented to the user prior to a document leaving the machine. Subsequently, responsive to receiving user authorization to deposit the acceptable documents, the acceptable documents can be stored in the machine and the unacceptable documents returned to the user.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method for determining a type and/or a condition of a note passing through the apparatus includes a note transport (12) which moves the note past sensing assemblies (18). Each sensing assembly includes emitters (32). Each of the emitters produces radiation at a different wavelength. The sensing assemblies include a reflectance detector (20) and a transmission detector (22) which are disposed on opposed sides of the passing note. The emitters direct radiation onto test spots (34) on the passing note. Reflectance values are generated from radiation reflected from each type of emitter to the reflectance detector. Transmission values are generated from radiation transmitted from an emitter through each test spot to the transmission detector. A control circuit produces a sensed value set including the reflectance and transmission values from each of the emitters in each of the sensing assemblies. The control circuit also determines an angle of skew of the passing note.

The thickness detector includes a radiation source (822). Radiation from the radiation source is directed by radiation guide (824) to a generally linear elongated radiation outlet (826) which extends transversely to the sheet path. A receiver (814) includes a radiation sensitive element (830) which is also transversely elongated relative to the sheet path. Sheets passing between the emitter and the receiver cause variations in the amount of radiation reaching the receiver. The transversely elongated surface of the sheet through which the transmission of radiation is sensed enables accurately distinguishing single sheets from double sheets.

A paper drive (36) moves a paper web (44) from a paper roll (42) through a printer (40). After indicia is printed on the paper, the paper is cut by a cutter (37) into sheets and delivered to a user by a presenter drive (30). After paper cutting, the paper is moved a short distance in a direction opposed to the direction that the paper normally moves during printing. A paper control device (49) operates to maintain a relatively constant resistance force to movement of the web in the printing direction after the paper has been retracted. The paper control device limits application of resistance forces to below a threshold as well as sudden fluctuation of resistance forces on the paper web which may otherwise cause the paper to slip relative to the drive and cause distortion of printed indicia or damage to the web.
