  • Patent number: 7109822
Abstract: A system is provided for rapidly prototyping monolithic microwave integrated circuit modules to provide an experimental structure that can be physically made to operate by stereolithographically rendering an SLA part directly from the designer's drawings and by coating the part with a conductive layer, with the smoothness being better than 0.001 inch and with the dimensional accuracy being better than 3 mils for some applications. In one embodiment, the coating for the SLA model is made from either rhodium or gold having a thickness of less than 1/10,000th of an inch, with a nickel barrier being first deposited followed by the gold. The particular SLA plastic is a high temperature plastic to prevent bubbling during the metal deposition step which in one embodiment involves sputtering. The coated model has a microfinish of Ra<0.001 inch, with active devices being electrically attached to the coating through the use of conductive adhesives or eutectic solder.

  • Patent number: 7110439
Abstract: A system is provided for use with a multi-user detector MUD, which dramatically decreases the processing time for separating out interfering transmissions from a number of users by eliminating from each processing iteration consideration of those bit estimates for which the probability or estimate of their value exceeds a predetermined threshold and can therefore be declared “certain”. In a Turbo MUD environment in which the output of the MUD is coupled back to the MUD through an error correction system, the output of the error correction is thresholded such that those bit estimates having probabilities or estimates greater than a predetermined threshold are assigned a quantized value and are eliminated from further processing by the MUD. For certain low-complexity processing Turbo MUDs there can be as much of a reduction as one-third in processing time, whereas for full MUD processing, the reduction in processing time can be as much as 1/30th.

  • Patent number: 7104178
Abstract: An active armor system, which includes a first armor layer and a second armor layer. An interior space is interposed between the first and second armor layer. A third layer is also positioned preferably adjacent to and on the inner side of the first layer. This third layer is comprised of a material selected from a piezoelectric material, and electrostrictive material, and a magnetostrictive material. The third layer may also be characterized as any material capable of producing an electrical or magnetic field within the space in response to the application of mechanical force on this third layer. The application of force on the third layer as a result of the impacting of a shaped charge projectile on the first armor layer will result in the production of an electric or magnetic charge in the interior space which will disrupt the formation of the shaped charge gas jet so as to prevent the penetration of the second armor layer.

  • Patent number: 7079716
Abstract: An integrated photonic device having a vertical optical connection between vertically oriented waveguides and a process for making the same is disclosed. A first waveguide is patterned and etched onto an underlying substrate. A cladding layer is placed over the waveguide and substrate. The cladding layer is coated with a photoresist, and then patterned with holes that are slightly offset from the underlying waveguide. The holes are implanted with nitrogen doses at an angle. The nitrogen doses form an angled implantation of SiON. The material change and accompanying index of refraction change due to the angled implantation optically couples the underlying waveguide with an outside surface of the cladding layer. A second waveguide or circuit can then be patterned on the outer surface of the cladding and connected to the angled implantation and underlying waveguide. Multiple layers of waveguides or circuitry can be connected to each other in this manner.

  • Patent number: 7058422
Abstract: A system is provided for increasing the number of users capable of communicating over a wireless network to permit multiple users to transmit information simultaneously on the same channel or frequency in which a Viterbi decoder-based signal separation system is used to pull apart or uncorrupt the otherwise interfering signals on the channel. In one embodiment, two users are assigned to the same channel, with a joint parameter estimation pre-processor being utilized to provide an estimation of the power, time and frequency offsets and phase of the incoming signals. The joint parameters estimated by the parameter estimation unit are applied to a signal separator which recovers and pulls apart the two signals.

  • Patent number: 7006047
Abstract: A low radar cross-section monocone antenna is provided with an ultra-wide bandwidth in the microwave region of the electromagnetic spectrum running from 1 gigahertz to 18 gigahertz by decreasing the low frequency cutoff through enlarging the overall dimensions of the cone while at the same time maintaining the base diameter of the apex of the cone to the initially-set dimension that establishes the high frequency cutoff of the antenna. The apex of this cone that serves as its feed point has a base diameter that results in the wide bandwidth, with the monocone antenna having a 5 dBi gain and omnidirectional coverage.

  • Patent number: 6996443
Abstract: A reconfigurable digital processing system for space includes the utilization of field programmable gate arrays utilizing a hardware centric approach to reconfigure software processors in a space vehicle through the reprogramming of multiple FPGAs such that one obtains a power/performance characteristic for signal processing tasks that cannot be achieved simply through the use of off-the-shelf processors. In one embodiment, for damaged or otherwise inoperable signal processors located on a spacecraft, the remaining processors which are undamaged can be reconfigured through changing the machine language and binary to the field programmable gate arrays to change the core processor while at the same time maintaining undamaged components so that the signal processing functions can be restored utilizing a RAM-based FPGA as a signal processor.

  • Patent number: 6967626
Abstract: A collapsible discone antenna is provided with an ultra wide band width by providing a collapsible conical skeleton cone, with the rods of the skeleton being provided with meander lines so as to effectively reduce the overall dimensions of the antenna by a factor of 2, with the antenna rods being electrically interconnected at their distal ends so as to eliminate performance degradation due to varying ground conductivities. A specialized feed configuration is used in one embodiment to feed multiple antennas stacked above a low band disc through the utilization of one or more coaxial lines which are wrapped around a ferrite toroid so that they may be passed up through the low-band disc without detuning the low band discone antenna. The use of the toroid inductor between the low-band cone and the low-band disc further reduces the low frequency cutoff of the antenna by markedly decreasing the VSWR at frequencies as low as 20 megahertz.

  • Patent number: 6956792
Abstract: A honeycomb-like shell is provided for an acoustic projector used in sonar applications to increase the bandwidth of the projector, reduce its weight, and to provide increased power density and reduced shell costs. The shell has outer and inner layers, with the honeycomb structure therebetween. The honeycomb shells have application in slotted cylindrical projectors, flextensional projectors, inverse flex tensional projectors, and oval-shaped projectors in which the honeycomb structure replaces the solid shells, with the honeycomb providing the relatively high specific stiffness required for the acoustic properties of the projector. The honeycomb shell achieves the same bending stiffness of the solid shells with less weight through the utilization of radial stiffeners between the inner and outer layers.

  • Patent number: 6926227
Abstract: Pulse integration is utilized on board an optically guided missile or other ordinance device used as a part of a target designation system for extending the lock-on range of the missile by approximately 18%, when a double pulse laser is utilized to illuminate and designate the target. Pulse integration is accomplished with a recirculating delay unit which superimposes the first pulse on the second pulse, such that while the pulses add coherently, noise does not add in phase. The pulse integration technique therefore enhances the signal-to-noise ratio when the missile is at the outer limits of its operating range. When the missile is sufficiently close to the target, doublet decoding is actuated to offer countermeasure resistance. At this point, pulse integration may proceed in lieu of doublet decoding or may be dispensed with in view of the increased signal-to-noise ratio due to the close range of the missile to the target.

  • Patent number: 6903689
Abstract: A hemispherical meander line loaded antenna is provided which can fit within a hemispherical radome as to minimize real estate on an aircraft such as an unmanned airborne vehicle. In one embodiment, a double monopole is recreated in a hemispherical form, thus to make what was originally a rectilinear package into a hemispherical package without materially affecting VSWR or ultra-wideband and antenna pattern characteristics. The wideband double monopole hemispherical meander line loaded antenna is provided with a single feed, with the delay associated with the meander lines equalize the reactance of the antenna, thereby to enable proper impedance matching.

  • Patent number: 6900770
Abstract: The combination of a Vivaldi slot and a meander line loaded antenna is provided which exhibits an ultra wideband characteristic with the Vivaldi notch expanding the high end and with the meander line loaded antenna portion reducing the low frequency cut-off. When these antennas are arrayed, this array exhibits a single lobe and an ultra wide 100:1 bandwidth. The Vivaldi notch portion of the antenna accommodates the higher frequencies, whereas the meander line loaded antenna portion of the antenna accommodates the lower frequencies, there being a smooth transition region between the Vivaldi and meander line portions of the antenna and no discontinuity. In one embodiment, the antenna is made to work between 50 MHz and 1500 MHz with a VSWR less than 3:1. The Vivaldi notch meander line combination assures that for an array one does not have a separation of the elements more than a 0.5 wavelength at the highest frequency, thus to eliminate the possibility of creating grating lobes.

  • Patent number: 6894656
Abstract: A standard slow wave meander line having sections of alternating impedance relative to a conductor plate is provided with a top shield connected to the conductor plane for the purpose of lowering the resonant frequency of narrow band antennas and lowering the low frequency cutoff limit of wide band antennas due to a higher delay per unit length occasioned by the use of the top shield. The shielded meander line may be utilized as a coupling device to truncated antennas such as a whip antenna or grounded loop antenna for the purposes of loading the antenna so as to provide lower frequency performance. Since the propagation constant of the meander line structure depends upon the number of high impedance/low impedance transitions per unit length, the utilization of the top shield results in more phase shifts per unit length and thus more delay per unit length, with the symmetric double sided version having double the number of transitions per unit length.
