    Abstract: For performing interstand cooling in a tandem rolling mill, at least one of the stands (12, 13) has delivery guides (17, 18) which incorporate equipment for delivering coherent, non-turbulent, curtains of coolant on to the faces of the strip rolled by that stand. The equipment for each guide (17, 18) consists of a coolant manifold (25, 32) formed within the guide structure and a communicating curtain-discharging nozzle (30, 36) which is recessed in the guide plate (21, 22) and which extends over almost the entire length of the guide. The manifold (25, 32) is supplied with coolant through pipes (26).

    Abstract: A sealing assembly for use in a press having one or several openings defined by a number of platens, consisting of a plate to which an inflatable, flexible seal with a protective retainer is attached and is installed in the space in each opening by suspending it to the bottom side of each platen. After closing of the press, positive air pressure is delivered into the sealing element to gradually inflate the sealing element causing a tight sealing of the space between the platens irrespective of the irregularities existing in the contact surface of the sealing element. A vacuum can be applied to remove any contaminants and/or gasses trapped in the space enclosed by the sealing assembly.

    Abstract: An edger mill having a pair of edging rolls mounted for variable positioning apart from each other is powered by a plurality of electric motors driving the rolls from above, having a long shaft extending upwardly from each roll, with a bull wheel connected to each shaft in driving relation, each bull wheel having two or more electric motors connected thereto in driving relation by respective pinions. Synchronization between the edging rolls may be effected by mounting the bull gears in mutual intermeshing relation, or by using synchronous motors so that the common bus supply to the motors constitutes a synchronizing agency to maintain the edging rolls in synchronized relation.

    Abstract: An improved design for a cage mill for disintegrating or reducing materials such as ore, grain, etc., consisting of a movable and a stationary portion for housing two cooperative rotatable cage assemblies mounted on coaxial shafts, and each having two rows of impact members alternating with those of the other cage assembly. The axial length of the impact members increases radially outwardly from the axis of the two shafts, and a disk for each cage assembly has a stepped portion for mounting the longer row of impact members and the ends of the members are protected by impact rings. The stepped portion provides an offset area for nesting the ring of a preceding row to protect the ring against abrasion. For each cage assembly a tapered split ring nut arrangement at the end of the shaft forces the cage against a hub rigidly secured to the shaft, and a locking means secures the nut to the shaft.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for uncoiling material such as wire, from a coil supported about a horizontal axis by a drum, including separating a loop from the coil, and bending the leading end of the material upon its exit from a pinch roll unit so that it takes a path generally parallel to that of a predetermined passline, and straightening the material once the leading end passes through the straightener roll area. An end bender roll and two of the straightener rolls are mounted on a pivotal frame connected to a piston cylinder assembly which causes the frame to be rotated through an arc in a direction to either bring the end bender roll into an operative position while the two straightener rolls are in an inoperative position, or to bring the end bender roll into an inoperative position while the two straightener rolls assume a nested relationship with a fourth roll in an operative position.

    Abstract: It is desirable for a pair of horizontal roll assemblies of a rolling mill to be withdrawn from the mill simultaneously with the longitudinal axes of the rolls parallel and substantially horizontal. If material is present in the mill there can be no connection between the bearing chocks on the drive side of the mill. When the roll assemblies have been withdrawn from the mill, a support vehicle is positioned relative to the roll assemblies so that the rolls can be supported on upper and lower support surfaces provided on the vehicle. The vehicle is the displaced away from the withdrawal position of the rolls so that replacement rolls carried on a similar support vehicle can be moved to a position from which they can be inserted into the mill.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus in a hot multi-stand tube mill for producing a thin metallic tube having end portions which corresponds to the wall thickness and diameter of the rest of the rolled tube or alternately, tapered ends. Each stand is provided with a set of three cooperating rolls arranged to form a roll pass opening. According to the tube's positioning in the mill, an appropriate additional adjustment of the rolls to decrease or enlarge the roll pass diameter is made in one or all of the last three stands. Both an initial roll setting varying means and an additional roll setting varying means cause movement of wedges abutting the roll chocks thereby causing movement of the rolls.

    Abstract: This disclosure relates in part to a hot extrusion press wherein the extrusion is cooled immediately after the extrusion operation by arranging a cooling tube including a cooling nozzle within the platen of the press and a second cooling nozzle between the platen and a water tank to which the extrusion is ultimately transferred for final cooling. The second cooling nozzle is employed to cool the extrusion and on the occasion of a cobbled extrusion, it is employed to drain the cooling tube and at the same time prevents water from flowing from the tank into the tube.
