  • Patent number: 4204413
Abstract: The disclosure pertains to a drive shaft for machines such as roller levellers for processing steel strip. The shaft is made up of outer and inner members, the latter driving the former. Between the members is provided a frictional driving surface such as can be provided by brake lining. The inner member has an opening into which is introduced a pressure medium such as solution of soluble oil which in a controllable and predictable manner expands the inner member thereby allowing the establishment of a driving relationship between the members up to a given torque and on the experience of excessive and objectionable torques allowing relative movement between the members.

  • Patent number: 4187707
Abstract: This disclosure relates to a process for the regulation of the thickness of a flat product such as a strip, sheet or plate, being rolled in a hot tandem rolling mill, and the corresponding regulation device for carrying out the process. Regarding each stand of the rolling mill on which the adjustment is being performed, a constant rolling pressure is maintained, the gap is measured, the deviation between the measured gap and a set value corresponding to a desired thickness of the product is determined, and the necessary correction of the value of the tensile force applied on the product between the stand under consideration and the upstream stand in order to bring the gap back to its set value is determined. Finally, this correction of the tensile force between the stand under consideration and the upstream stand is performed.

  • Patent number: 4176540
Abstract: An articulated spindle as used for example in a rolling mill drive has a shank the ends of which are connected to sleeves through gear-type couplings. Liquid is continually passed through each gear-type coupling for cooling and lubrication. The liquid is supplied under pressure through the shank to the couplings, passes through the couplings, and is withdrawn under suction through return conduits which rotate with the shank. The liquid is supplied by a delivery pump through a rotating joint to the shank and is withdrawn from the return conduits through the rotating joint by a suction pump.

  • Patent number: 4164858
Abstract: A rolling mill includes an assembly which can be withdrawn from the two housings. The assembly has two rolls with each roll having a pair of bearing chocks on the roll necks and a pair of further chocks positioned outwardly of the bearing chocks one on each of a pair of extensions of the roll necks. Fluid operable means positioned between the corresponding further chocks permit bending forces in one direction to be applied to the rolls and bending forces in the opposite direction are applied to the rolls by fluid operable means acting between the further chocks of one roll and a reaction member fixed relative to the further chocks of the other roll.

  • Patent number: 4154081
Abstract: This disclosure pertains to a method and device for changing a die ring to and from a die in an indirect extrusion press. Once the die-die ring assembly is exposed from the container of the press, the changing device consisting of a rotating arm having opposed relatively movable jaws is caused to engage the die ring and remove it from the extrusion axis of the press, and after treatment, if necessary, to return it to the extrusion axis and place it on the die.In the operation of indirect extrusion presses it has been the normal practice to employ a composite die assembly consisting of a die and outer encircling die ring. After completion of the extrusion operation the die ring is removed from the back of the container and either the same die ring or a second one is placed back on the die after the die or the container has been moved to position the die at the front of the container.

  • Patent number: 4149396
Abstract: An arrangement for securing and easily releasing a mandrel from a mandrel rod upon their advancement and return movements during the piercing operation of a seamless tube. Between the mandrel and rod is an intermediate piece having one or more openings for receiving a hook with a nose extending into an opening of the mandrel. The hook is biased into position by a spring mounted around its one end and at its other end beneath a nose is a tapered surface for contacting a corresponding surface of the mandrel to pivot the hook away from the interior of the mandrel to release the mandrel from the intermediate piece and mandrel rod.

  • Patent number: 4127997
Abstract: A universal cassette type stand for a continuous rolling line which can be converted from a universal beam stand having two horizontal rolls and two vertical rolls into a stand having two horizontal rolls for rolling structural shapes. Each horizontal and vertical roll includes two hydraulic tightening jacks each associated with a different chock. Each jack is provided with a servo-valve, a position sensor, and a pressure probe. The supply of each jack is servo-controlled by a regulation loop where the measurement of the tightening is transformed into a position reference depending on the modulus of either the lower or upper part or sides of the stand. The regulation or control loop is such that one of several alternatives for rolling the beam to a desired mode can be accomplished.

  • Patent number: 4127026
Abstract: An arrangement in a testhead of an hydrostatic pipe testing apparatus for tripping a limit switch, which is connected to a control for a main hydraulic piston cylinder assembly for the testhead, upon the pipe's contact with the arrangement thereby interrupting the travel of the testhead. This tripping action is indicative that an end of the pipe is in proper engagement with a seal in the testhead prior to the introduction of the pressurized testing fluid into the interior of the pipe.

  • Patent number: 4119256
Abstract: This disclosure relates to a pinch roll unit for feeding hot rolled strip to a down coiler employed in a hot strip mill. The upper roll of the pinch roll unit is mounted on a beam which is adjustable by a jack screw against the pressure of a piston cylinder assembly to set the gap between the pinch rolls. The upper roll of the pinch roll unit in addition is further loaded by a double-acting regulatable auxiliary piston cylinder assembly carried by the beam for controlling the gap pressure between the pinch rolls and hence the tension on the strip.

  • Patent number: 4114413
Abstract: This disclosure pertains to a broken wire switch for use in conjunction with a wire drawing machine. It includes a light source and a light detector, both mounted on the common side of the path of travel of the wire. The light source and detector are arranged so that the radiation pattern of the light source and the field of view of the light detector intersect at a point in the normal path of travel of the wire. An electric switch associated with the light detector interrupts the operation of a windup block that advances the wire.

  • Patent number: 4094619
Abstract: This disclosure includes entry and delivery clamps arranged on opposite sides of a multiplaten press for clamping belting in order to apply a tension to the belting prior to pressing. The tension is applied by moving the entry clamp in a direction away from the press. The belting is fed over support rollers on opposite sides of the press which receive the belting from different openings of the press. These rollers are caused to move before the press is closed to maintain the belting away from the hot platens of the press, then moved in concert with and in the direction of the platens during pressing and then, if required, they may be moved independent of the platens when the press has been opened after pressing to effect a stripping of the belting from the platens.

  • Patent number: 4065953
Abstract: A mechanical pipe expander for a step-by-step expanding of steel pipes formed with a spiral welded seam. The expander includes an expander head that performs the expanding made up of circumferentially arranged segments over which the pipe assumes a circumjacent position and after which the segments move radially outward to forcibly engage the inside of the pipe. In order to avoid the segments contacting the inside welded seams of the pipe, the segments are formed with one or more complementary spiral slots and if the pipe has cross welded seams with one or more corresponding cross spiral slots.

  • Patent number: 4056957
Abstract: In a rolling mill it is desirable that the torques delivered by the two driven rolls should be the same or at least there should be some predetermined torque differential between them. The torque transmitted by each of the driven rolls is measured and a measure of the difference between the torques is obtained. Said measure is then used to adjust the angular length of that part of the periphery of at least one roll where it is in contact with the workpiece being rolled in the sense to bring about the required torque distribution. The angular length may be adjusted by varying the angle of approach or exit of the workpiece relative to the mill rolls.
