  • Patent number: 5440564
Abstract: Capability is provided to dynamically reallocate the multiplex data stream from one communication channel to a plurality of communication channels. This allows increased flexibility in responding to degradation of the main communication channel and in accommodating increased user demand exceeding the capacity of the main channel. A table is generated to control the DTE PORTs accessed during each slot of a multiplexer frame. A separate table is generated to control the allocation of multiplex data between communication channels. Both tables are generated based upon a common Hash table. A plurality of Hash tables correspond to different output data rates and permit the output rate of the multiplexer to coincide with the maximum output rate capacity of an associated transmission device such as a modem.

  • Patent number: 5425029
Abstract: The present invention provides for fast packet information transfer from a first type switching system to a diverse, i.e., different, type switching system by adaptation of a format of each fast packet from the first type switching system to a format that is portable across the second type switching system. For example, the present invention enables transport of fast packets from a fast packet switching system across a cell relay system and vice versa, from a fast packet switching system across an asynchronous transfer mode system and vice versa, and so on.

  • Patent number: 5408475
Abstract: A frame code word (FCW) is inserted in a time division multiplexed slot in a modem data stream preferably using an embedded secondary channel. A receiving modem demultiplexes the FCW and compares it against the known transmitted FCW. Based upon the number of incorrect FCW's received, a reinitialization command is generated causing the modems to begin a retraining sequence-in view of the detected error condition.

  • Patent number: 5406552
Abstract: A device and method utilize a linear feedback/feedforward configuration to estimate and cancel a listener echo wherein equalizer (202) and listener echo cancellation (204 and 208) units are jointly updated, allowing determination of an error signal (204 and 208), in place of the former method of separate error signal determination for each of an equalizer and a listener echo canceller. An improved phase-correction scheme is utilized to compensate the frequency offset in the listener echo. The relationship between the listener echo and talker far echo is utilized to facilitate the listener echo cancellation.

  • Patent number: 5406281
Abstract: A method (100) and device (200) increase efficiency of a data compression encoder or decoder by testing whether an input string is a maximum length string upon successful match of the input string in a dictionary. Where the length of the input string is equal to a predetermined maximum string length, the string matching process is terminated without processing an additional input character that would cause an unsuccessful string match. The maximum length string test is accomplished by testing a string length counter for the value zero, where the string length counter is set to the maximum string length value when the input string is NULL or alternatively is set to the maximum string length minus one when the input string is a one character string, and the string length counter is decremented for each input character that extends the matched input string.

  • Patent number: 5396643
Abstract: The present invention includes a low-earth satellite-based paging broadcast system (100) and method (200, 300) that maximizes spectral efficiency and minimizes power expenditure for the broadcast of paging messages by broadcasting the messages to terminator- or originator-selectable portions of the total system coverage area. The terminator selects a long-term preferred geographic area (LTPGA), and optionally, a short-term preferred geographic area (STPGA). The originator provides the terminator ID, the message, and optionally provides a customized preferred geographic area (CPGA). Terminators and originators can easily modify the selectable geographic areas (SGA(s)): LTPGA(s), STPGA(s), and CPGA(s). The gateway converts the SGA(s) to addressable coverage areas (ACA(s)), and transmits a signal including the paging information, and ACA(s) to at least a first communication satellite (COM SAT).

  • Patent number: 5384780
Abstract: The present invention provides a novel scheme for automatically increasing data throughput in a communication system by having data compression with delay minimization done within a modem. A high speed modem includes a logical link negotiation unit for probing and determining data compression parameters (DCPs) for a synchronous data compression link with a remote modem and for inserting the DCPs and codeword combinations into compressed data. The modem also includes a physical layer connection unit coupled to synchronous data terminal equipment to provide a delay minimizing scheme that adjustably accommodates data delivery delay to the receiving modem. A method and system incorporate the functions of the high speed modem.
