  • Patent number: 8315633
Abstract: Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate supporting uplink soft handoff in a UMTS TDD wireless communication environment. A virtual active set (VAS) for each user device can be generated at the network side of the communication environment, and sectors listed in each VAS can be informed of their respective listings. Sectors in a user device's VAS can be provided with a scrambling code and resource assignments from a nominal sector serving the user device, which information can be employed to attempt to receive and demodulate uplink signals from the user device at all base stations in the VAS thereof. Additionally, such resources can be employed to transmit power control and reverse activity commands to the user device on the downlink.

  • Patent number: 8259702
Abstract: Addressing methods and apparatus which use airlink resources in an efficient manner are described. In order to use airlink resources efficiently, a variety of address types are supported. The number of bits in the address may vary depending on the type. In order to support a variety of different address types, of different lengths, in one embodiment, an address used for communications over an airlink is constructed by including in the address an address type field used to communicate an address type indicator and, optionally, an address field used to communicate an address value. The address field is variable in length and may be null, requiring the communication of no bits in this field, for certain types of addresses. Four types of addresses which may be supported include: i) an Access Terminal assisted address, ii) a Network assisted address, 3) a Pilot PN based address; and 4) a reserved address.

  • Patent number: 8254877
Abstract: Apparatus and methods of establishing an emergency voice call include user equipment transmitting, and a first serving core network receiving, a request for an emergency call via a wireless access network. The apparatus and methods further include a determination by the first serving core network of an alternative serving core network. In some aspects, the determination may be made based on a user equipment location from a location retrieval function, which may obtain such information from other network components or from the user equipment. In other aspects, the determination may be based on lack of capability or lack of capacity. Further, the apparatus and methods also include establishment of the emergency call with a second serving core network different from the serving core network based on the determination.

  • Patent number: 8249117
Abstract: Aspects describe dynamically adjusting a reordering release timer to mitigate latency in a MAC-hs queue. Information already available at a mobile device is utilized for current packets and for missing packets to dynamically adjust the value of the T1 timer in an effort to mitigate latency. Further, the network might provide information regarding HARQ attempts, which mobile device can utilize for computing the dynamic value of the T1 timer. The network might signal the amount of time the mobile device should subtract from timer T1 for every HARQ transmission. Further, the T1 timer might only be dynamically adjusted for a subset of radio bearers.

  • Patent number: 8244246
Abstract: Disclosed are systems, methods and computer program products for better system reselection (BSR) in a multi-system wireless communication environment. In one aspect, the BSR procedure provisions a mobile device to determine if a currently-registered wireless communication system is the most-preferred system among systems of a similar technology and among systems of different technologies identified in the device's combined preferred roaming list (PRL). The mobile device then activates an intra-system BSR timer if the currently-registered system is not the most-preferred system among systems of similar technology and an inter-system BSR timer if the currently-registered system is not the most-preferred system among systems of different technologies. Upon expiration of the intra-system BSR timer, the mobile device searches for a more-preferred system among systems of similar technology.

  • Patent number: 8229499
Abstract: A mobile device or access terminal of a wireless wide area network (WWAN) communication system is provisioned for Multi-Mode System Selection (MMSS) wherein an MMSS System Priority List (MSPL) is used with respect to the underlying system selection priority list (e.g., Private Land Mobile Network (PLMN) list). Relating a current location to one or more entries in an MMSS Location Associated Priority List (MLPLs) enables scaling a range of entries in the PLMN list, indicating whether the MSPL apply to the entire list of PLMNs stored in an access terminal or to some subset of the PLMN List. Similarly, the present innovation addresses whether the MSPL applies to the entire Preferred Roaming List (PRL) or some subset of a geo-spatial location (GEO) area.

  • Patent number: 8155711
Abstract: Aspects describe modifying a service search pattern based on whether a device battery is being charged or is not being charged (e.g., is connected to a battery charger or not connected to a battery charger). A power conservative search pattern can be utilized if the battery is not being charges. If the battery is being charged, the search pattern can be an aggressive search pattern. Further, the search pattern can change if there is a change in whether the battery is being charged. The rate of charging the battery, a current battery level, amount of power consumed during the search, and/or the power being input by the battery chargers can be utilized to select and/or modify a network search pattern. Further, a user can select or change a search pattern through interaction with a user interface.

  • Patent number: 8126127
Abstract: A method and apparatus for the provision of broadcast service information is disclosed. In a wireless communication system supporting a broadcast service, a service ID is provided to identify the broadcast service. The service ID is sent to a base station. The base station configures a broadcast service parameters message that includes the service ID. The base station then transmits the broadcast service parameters message to a mobile station. The mobile station receives the broadcast service parameters message and uses the service ID in the broadcast service parameters message to determine availability of the broadcast service in an adjacent sector.

  • Patent number: 8098662
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for communicating between an access terminal (AT) and remote device via an access point (AP) are described. For communications over the air link, between an AP and an AT, a short address corresponding to the remote device is used for routing packets to/from the remote device. This conserves air link resources. However, for communicating between the AP and the remote device a longer address, e.g., a full IP address corresponding to the remote device, is used. The AT converts between the long and short addresses as information, e.g., packets, is communicated between the remote device and the AT. The long address may be, for example, an IP address corresponding to the remote device used to route packets through a Layer 2 tunnel between the remote device and the AP. In some embodiments the remote device is a remote access point.
