  • Patent number: 4909308
Abstract: A valve is provided with one inlet and two outlets with one of the outlets being normally closed by a valve in the form of a film disc carried by a flexible blade. A magnetic pad secured to the blade is attracted by the proximity of an actuator carrier magnetic element to cause the flexing of the blade to open the normally closed outlet and to close the normally open outlet. The actuator may be either thermally or electrically actuated and is suitable to override a bleed thermostat to permit warm-up of an overcooled area or to cause a switchover in operation between a heating and cooling mode by connecting the appropriate bleed thermostat so as to control the inflation of the bellows.

  • Patent number: 4907414
Abstract: In a low side hermetic compressor, a small portion of the compressed refrigerant gas is diverted and discharged into the oil sump through an orifice into the upper level of the oil in the sump. This results in a supersaturated solution of refrigerant in oil in the upper level which drives the refrigerant out of the oil, thereby creating froth which provides sound reduction without disturbing the lower level which remains stratified.

  • Patent number: 4899550
Abstract: A transport refrigeration system is connected to a hydraulic system including a pump, control valves, a reservoir and a hydraulic device. When the refrigeration system is running, the hydraulic system is disabled and the diesel and compressor are run responsive to cargo refrigeration requirements. When the hydraulic system is activated, the diesel is caused to operate at a preselected speed for maximum hydraulic flow and the refrigeration electrical, if necessary, system unloads the compressor to divert more engine power to the hydraulic pump.

  • Patent number: 4900237
Abstract: A rolling rotor motor/compressor has a stator/cylinder with an internal rotor/piston. The stator/cylinder and rotor/piston together define a chamber and a vane extends into this chamber when the device is compressor. The rotor/piston has a pair of axially extending shafts and a pair of counterweights coact with the shafts for balancing while permitting radial movement of the rotor/piston within the stator/cylinder. This permits unloading of the compressor such as when there is a liquid slug.

  • Patent number: 4899555
Abstract: Gaseous refrigerant is supplied from a flash tank economizer to cool the motor of a hermetic or semi-hermetic compressor when there is a sufficient flow available. When the flow becomes too small, liquid refrigerant is supplied to the shell of the compressor for cooling the motor.

  • Patent number: 4892467
Abstract: A rolling rotor motor/compressor is provided with counterweights for mechanical balancing while permitting radial movement of the rotor/piston. This permits unloading of the compressor such as when there is a liquid slug. The rotor/piston and the counterweights are driven by diametrically opposed windings so that the rotor/piston does not drive the counterweights with attendant power/capacity reductions.

  • Patent number: 4890666
Abstract: The difference between the zone temperature and the scheduled setpoint, or .DELTA.t, is the basic data from each zone. Communication between the air handler control and the air terminal control is provided via the air system control so that the system is temperature, rather than pressure, responsive. The same temperature air is supplied to each zone in amounts sufficient for ventilation requirements independent of temperature requirements. The amount of air supplied beyond the ventilation requirements is controlled to achieve terminal satisfaction. The terminals are sampled to determined their satisfaction and their responses are requested as votes for either heating or cooling. Whether the system supplies heated or cooled air is determined by the voting.

  • Patent number: 4885840
Abstract: A coiled resistance element is connected to an insulator block by sequentially locating and holding the coil in place; camming the coil such that two adjacent coils are forced together and the coils on either side are forced away so as to form two gaps or openings; and, inserting the arms of an insulator block into the two gaps so as to force the two adjacent coils into the cross bar portion of a T-slot formed in the connector block. Upon removing the camming forces from the coil, the two adjacent coils will be separated and located in the cross bar portion of the T-slot to thereby secure the coil and insulator together.

  • Patent number: 4878818
Abstract: In a compressor of the type in which there is a movable trapped volume such as a screw or scroll type of compressor the trapped volume moves into and out of fluid contact with one or more valves. The valve(s) can provide fluid communication between the trapped volume and either suction for unloading or discharge for V.sub.i control.

  • Patent number: 4860231
Abstract: A variable speed motor is regulated responsive to the load torque acting on the blower wheel. The load torque acting on the blower wheel is determined by means of a coast down procedure in which the motor is briefly de-energized and the rate of angular change d.omega./dt is determined. The load torque acting on the blower wheel can be determined knowing the moment of inertia and d.omega./dt. The average motor RPM during the coast down is then related to a torque value where an RPM vs. CFM relationship has been empirically determined for that blower wheel. A microprocessor then computes the final motor RPM necessary to achieve the desired air delivery (CFM) using the fan law equations.

  • Patent number: 4854831
Abstract: A high side hermetic scroll compressor passes the discharge gas along the interior of the shell and is thereby cooled prior to being subjected to a centrifugal separation to remove the oil before being discharged from the compressor. The separated oil is returned to the sump via a fluid path isolated from the discharge gas.

  • Patent number: 4834633
Abstract: A scroll compressor can be provided with different wrap thicknesses to compensate for the different material properties of the orbiting and fixed scroll elements. The concept of different wrap thicknesses also aids in the select-fitting of parts and in the provision of and adjustment of a clearance or spacing between the wrap elements. Additionally, in the manufacture of a scroll compressor, the total wrap thickness of the two wraps is kept constant within narrow tolerances while the individual wrap thicknesses are allowed to vary over a predetermined range. The cutting tools used are sized such that even if they differ in their cutting diameters, the combined cutting diameters, and therefore the total wrap thicknesses, are constant within narrow tolerances. This permits the tools to be used and resharpened until their cutting diameters fall below the minimum acceptable diameter.

  • Patent number: 4834631
Abstract: In a reciprocating compressor, the separator plate separating the suction and discharge plenums acts as a spring relative to the valve plate assembly. Under liquid slugging conditions the valve plate moves against the biasing force of the separator plate to establish a relief passage between the piston cylinder and the suction plenum.

  • Patent number: 4811575
Abstract: A bellows assembly is secured to a retainer by extrusions having a mushroom or arrow shaped cross section. Air flowing through the terminal impinges upon an impervious film covering the central portion of the device and is diverted into two flow paths. Initially the flow paths extend between the film and the cutoff plates which coact to form a tight shut off. Downstream of the cutoff plates, the flow paths are between a porous foam covering the bellows and foam surrounding the cutoff plates to provide a sound reducing effect. If necessary or desirable, the back of the retainer may be covered with foam or other suitable sound insulating material.
