  • Patent number: 4699314
Abstract: A diffuser is provided with three discharges. Two of the discharges are directed in one direction and, when installed, would be directed towards the outside wall of the conditioned space. The other discharge is directed in the opposite direction and would discharge into the interior of the conditioned space. Responsive to the temperature of the conditioned air being supplied, a thermally responsive actuator of shape memory alloy is in either one of two positions whereby either one of the two discharges in the one direction or the discharge in the opposite direction is blocked. This results in two discharges in one direction or one in each direction with the discharge area being the same in both instances.

  • Patent number: 4688391
Abstract: A transport refrigeration system is connected to a hydraulic system including a pump, control valves, a reservoir and a hydraulic piston. When the refrigeration system is running, the hydraulic system is in a bypassing or idling mode and the diesel and compressor are run responsive to cargo refrigeration requirements. When the hydraulic system is activated, the diesel is caused to operate at a preselected speed for maximum hydraulic flow and the refrigeration electrical system unloads the compressor to divert more engine power to the hydraulic pump.

  • Patent number: 4688472
Abstract: A spoiler is located on the damper blade of a damper assembly such that it serves to divert the flow from the hinge area to avoid air separation. Further, the spoiler does not define the most restricted portion of the flow path and thereby has a minimal effect on the flow resistance.

  • Patent number: 4682488
Abstract: A slit fin heat exchanger is formed by wrapping slit fin tubing into a flat coil having two spaced rows of tubing. The flat coil is located on mandrels which are rotatable about spaced parallel axes with the mandrels and axes initially being in the same plane. The mandrels are rotated about their axes in opposite directions which shifts the plane in which the coil is located. The shifting of the plane of the coil moves a portion of a first row of the coil into contact with a planar portion of a platen and the second row of the coil into a nesting relationship with the portion of the first row which is in contact with the planar portion of the platen. Continued rotation of the mandrels causes folding of the portions of the coil which extends the area of nesting. The folding takes place through up to 120.degree. and the ends of the first row of the coil contacts a portion of the platen causing the formation of a knob at the end of each coil.

  • Patent number: 4660872
Abstract: A cammed latch is provided with two spaced cams each of which has a cam profile made up of two arcuate sections separated by a cusp. The cusp portion constitutes an interference fit during opening end closing. The latch structure is resiliently mounted to flanges which flex to permit the striker rods to pass over the cusps. A torsion spring provides a closing bias in all positions of the latch.

  • Patent number: 4659010
Abstract: A bleed thermostat is provided with structure for determining at least one position of the bleed plate and therefore, the registration of the opening with the bleed port at that point. By selecting the full registration position, a condition indicative of terminal dissatisfaction is sensed. Additionally, in one embodiment, structure is provided for making the thermostat either direct acting or reverse acting to permit its use in either a heating or a cooling mode.

  • Patent number: 4653286
Abstract: A discharge valve and baffle assembly is provided in a refrigeration system having either one or more compressors. The discharge valve and baffle assembly eliminates the effects of an established head upon starting the associated compressor, thereby permitting the compressor to quickly come up to speed for the established head. During compressor operation, the discharge valve and baffle assembly provides a suction force for holding the valve in the open position to prevent bouncing of the valve during part-load conditions and cycling of the valve between the open and closed positions during surge conditions. The assembly prevents backflow of refrigerant through the nonoperating compressor, and also provides a baffle effect to direct the flow of high pressure gaseous refrigerant uniformly into the condenser.

  • Patent number: 4648551
Abstract: An adaptive motor control for a furnace with or without an evaporator coil determines and delivers the desired CFM for each thermostat cycle. Specifically, a circulating air blower driven by an ECM is initially set at a known duty cycle for each thermostat cycle and the delivered CFM is calculated. The RPM necessary to deliver the desired CFM is then determined and the ECM is set accordingly.

  • Patent number: 4646548
Abstract: A method and a tool for expanding the outside diameter and forming grooves on the inside surface of a tube. The tool comprises an axially extending mandrel, a centering portion, and a grooving portion. The centering and grooving portions of the tool are both secured to the mandrel, with the grooving portion located axially rearward of the centering portion. The centering portion radially projects outward of the mandrel, and the grooving portion is coaxial with and radially projects outward of the central portion of the tool. The central portion defines a smooth annular surface to engage and partially expand the tubes, inside and outside diameters, to guide the tube onto the grooving portion, and to maintain the grooving portion centered within the tube. The grooving portion defines an outside surface to expand the tube further, and preferably includes a plurality of external fins to form grooves on the inside surface of the tube.

  • Patent number: 4639594
Abstract: A fiberoptic probe for in situ sensing of liquid level, concentration and/or phase change contains the optical and electrical components as well as a reference fluid so that the components are at the temperature of the fluid to be monitored. A reference fiber is located in the reference fluid which is sealed in the probe so that volatile reference fluids can be used.

  • Patent number: 4637729
Abstract: Light in two different wavelengths, only one of which is attenuated by the presence of a substance to be tested for, is passed through a light path which includes a fluid path. The two wavelengths are equally attenuated by particulate contamination and all other conditions except for the presence of the tested for substance. A light path through a reference cell provides a reference for each wavelength. The presence of the tested for substance provides a differential attenuation which is indicative of the presence of the substance and the degree of differential attenuation is a measure of the concentration of the substance.

  • Patent number: 4633942
Abstract: A slit fin heat exchanger is formed by wrapping slit fin tubing around a pair of mandrels having expanded metal cylinders thereon into a flat coil having two spaced rows of tubing. • Patent number: 4630670
Abstract: A zoned variable volume system is provided with a pair of non-connected dampers in each zone. The first damper controls flow through a cooling coil. The second damper controls flow through a heating coil and provides heated or neutral air depending upon whether or not the heating coil is actuated. The fan speed is adjusted to cause at least one damper to be fully open so that the system operates at a minimum static pressure. The system is adapted to provide tenant metering by determining the amount of conditioned air provided to each zone. Each zone is controlled through a single temperature and flow sensor.

  • Patent number: 4623326
Abstract: Oil is subjected to at least one centrifugal separation to remove contaminants prior to its being supplied to the lubricating system. Additionally, there is at least a portion of the flow that is returned to the sump after separation without its being circulated for lubricating purposes. • Patent number: 4619118
Abstract: A spool valve is located within the shell of a hermetic compressor unit and shifted by a solenoid valve to direct the discharge of the compressor through either of two lines through the shell. Depending upon the line used as the discharge line, the compressor is suitable for either heating or cooling and is the equivalent of a reversible compressor. Alternatively, a spool valve can connect the suction line of a compressor to either of two lines extending through the compressor shell.
