  • Patent number: 8343231
Abstract: A surgical mesh for repair of incisional and or ventral hernia with a fixation fin extending from one of the surfaces of the mesh usually along the midline of the surface. The closure of the hernia defect edges involves suturing to the fin to avoid the possibility of damage to internal organs during laparoscopic suturing. An alternate embodiment involves a flexible rod mounted in a tubular structure on the mesh axis. The tubular structure includes a central opening with an attached thread that permits removal of the flexible rod, which spreads the mesh open to facilitate fixation of the mesh onto the abdominal wall surface.

  • Patent number: 8221028
Abstract: A boat lift includes a lift frame rotatably mounted to a boat dock. A lower trolley with a buoyant body slides on the frame. An upper trolley slides on the frame and is engaged by the boat as it propels itself forward onto the frame when the latter is in a boat receiving position. A linkage connected between the trolleys causes the lower trolley and the buoyant body to slide rearwardly underneath the boat to rotate the lift frame into a final docking position in which the boat is out of the water. The upper trolley is locked into position, thus holding the lower trolley in position through the linkage. The boat is launched by releasing the upper trolley lock, which permits the upper trolley to slide rearwardly, with concomitant forward sliding movement of the lower trolley that permits the frame to rotate and launch the boat from the frame.

  • Patent number: 8206340
Abstract: A portable insulin injection pen and blood glucose monitoring device is integrated into a single unit for testing and treating diabetes symptoms. The device has a housing of a size suitable for transport in a user's clothing pocket or handbag. Within the housing is a blood glucose monitoring system for receiving a sample of the user's blood and detecting its glucose level, an insulin injection mechanism for administering an insulin injection, and a microprocessor that calculates an insulin dosage appropriate to the detected blood glucose level and sets the insulin injection mechanism to administer the calculated insulin dosage. A communication device automatically informs a remote emergency service provider, such as 911 or an emergency service to which the user has subscribed, if the microprocessor determines that the detected blood glucose level presents a potential danger to the user.

  • Patent number: 8137268
Abstract: A method for holding a hollow internal organ in a desired location during a medical procedure uses a retractor device and a gripper element, each of which includes a magnetic member, one being a first magnet and the other being either a second magnet or a non-magnetized magnetically permeable member. The retractor device is placed into the lumen of the organ and the gripper element is located outside the body cavity of the patient. The magnetic members of the gripper element and the retractor device are brought into proximity with each other to capture a wall of the hollow organ and a body wall of the patient between them, with the gripper element being held at a location that secures the organ at the desired location. In another embodiment, the gripper element is placed inside the body cavity of the patient and outside the organ, with the magnetic members of the gripper element and the retractor device in proximity with each other to capture a wall of the hollow organ between them.

  • Patent number: 7848475
Abstract: A strainer for an emergency core cooling system (ECCS) in a nuclear power plant comprises a perforated strainer element that is immersed in a reservoir of cooling water, which is drawn through the strainer element into the emergency core cooling system. The side of the strainer element in contact with the cooling water has a contoured configuration for disrupting the formation of a flat bed of fibrous material that can trap small particulate material intended to pass through the strainer element. Incorporating this strainer element into an ECCS strainer enables the strainer to be made more compact, because the debris bed need not be spread over an unduly large area to prevent excessive head loss from the debris load in the event of a reactor loss of coolant accident. The strainer also incorporates a modular construction that uses individual strainer disc modules. Each disc module includes a perforated first disc part having a central opening and a perforated second disc part also having a central opening.

  • Patent number: 7798448
Abstract: An apparatus for attenuating acoustic resonance generated by flow over a cavity in a surface comprises a plurality of flat flaps proximate to an upstream edge of the cavity. The flaps are disposed in an array spaced in a width direction of the cavity edge, and are oscillated by the flow in two degrees of freedom solely by the flow, independent of an actuation mechanism. Each flap includes a first hinge generally coextensive with the surface for enabling oscillation in a first degree of freedom and a second hinge orthogonal to the first hinge and forming a tab for enabling oscillation in a second degree of freedom. The hinges are constructed with torsional spring constants that provide predetermined oscillation frequencies and magnitudes. The apparatus can include a deployment mechanism for moving each flap between a stowed position wherein it is generally flush with the surface and a deployed position wherein the flap can be oscillated by the flow.

  • Patent number: 7780639
Abstract: One embodiment of the invention comprises a trocar and a reducer cap that magnetically attaches to the trocar. The trocar and the cap each include a magnetic member, at least one of which is a first magnet, and the other of which is either a second magnet or a non-magnetized magnetically permeable member. Including a magnet of sufficient strength in the trocar and/or the cap will create a magnetic field that automatically holds a surgical instrument having a magnetically permeable member at its tip in axial alignment with the cap or trocar lumen. Introduction of the surgical instrument into the lumen can be further facilitated by providing the trocar or cap lumen with a funnel-shaped opening. A lumen seal can be provided by one or more compliant toroidal seal members that expand radially inwardly when compressed axially by the magnetic attraction between the cap and trocar. The alignment feature is particularly advantageous when incorporated in a mini-trocar having a lumen on the order of 1-3 mm in diameter.

  • Patent number: 7444246
Abstract: A system and method for accurately estimating the fluctuating pressure loads on components, such as steam dryers, within a BWR steam dome using pressure time history measurements made on components of the BWR facility external to the steam dome. The method uses existing sensors to obtain the pressure time histories. An accurate determination of the fluctuating pressure loads within the steam dome may be obtained by modeling and analyzing the steam delivery system external to the steam dome, including all possible acoustic sources, using acoustic circuit methodology and pressure time histories, and then coupling these results, essentially as part of the boundary conditions, to the solutions for Helmholtz equation within the steam dome.

  • Patent number: 7234914
Abstract: A compressor or pump employs principles of unsteady delayed stall to enhance the head increase produced by the compressor or pump. Plural airfoil-shaped lifting elements are spaced from each other in a cascade and the fluid is directed into the cascade by a device that varies a parameter of the flow relative to each lifting element in repeating cycles to cause the flow relative to each lifting element to begin to separate from the lifting element and then reattach thereto during each cycle. The cascade can comprise an axial flow impeller with plural impeller blades arranged around a hub capable of rotating on an axis. The device for varying the flow parameter can be a stator with a plurality of stator blades upstream of the impeller, or a second, counter-rotating axial flow impeller. In either case, the parameter is a flow angle at which the flow is directed to the downstream impeller.
