    Abstract: An apparatus comprises a duct having a fluid outlet for fluid propelled through the duct and a container positions a substance for diffusion into the fluid through an opening. A movable valve selectively places the opening in fluid communication with the fluid in the duct and seals the opening to prevent introduction of the substance into the fluid. In a particularly advantageous embodiment the apparatus is a blow dryer in which a heating element disposed in the duct heats air flowing therethrough. The substance can be a fragrance or a conditioner introduced into the air stream. According to other aspects of the invention, the container is interchangeable with containers containing other substances, such as different fragrances, and is completely sealed when the blow dryer is not in use. In another embodiment, a container attached to the duct ejects the substance in a spray external of the duct proximate to the duct outlet.

    Abstract: An article that is particularly well suited for use as a gas turbine engine component has a metallic substrate and a ceramic thermal barrier layer including a mixed metal oxide system comprising a compound selected from the group consisting of (i) a lanthanum aluminate and (ii) a calcium zirconate, the calcium in which is partially replaced by at least one calcium-substitute element, such as strontium (Sr) or barium (Ba). In addition, the lanthanum in the lanthanum aluminate can be partially replaced by a lanthanum-substitute element from the lanthanide group, particularly gadolinium (Gd). A process for producing such an article comprises providing a pre-reacted mixed metal oxide system as described above and applying it to the substrate by plasma spraying or an evaporation coating process.

    Abstract: A pump or compressor for transporting a fluid comprises an impeller includes a plurality of impeller elements disposed for rotation to impart kinetic energy to the fluid. The impeller, which in one embodiment is an axial flow compressor, has an electrically conductive ring or other conductive members disposed along a rotary path of the impeller. An impeller driver includes a ring of magnetically permeable material extending in an arc proximate to the rotary path of the conductive portion of the impeller. The impeller driver acts as a motor stator with two core portions wound with electrically conductive coils for inducing a magnetic field in the ring and two electrically conductive pole portions spaced from the core portions. Alternating electrical current introduced to the coils imparts a rotary force to the electrically conductive ring of the impeller, causing it to transport the compressor working fluid.

    Abstract: A mechanical actuating device for moving an aerodynamic or hydrodynamic surface includes plural flexure members confined in an elastically deformed condition. The flexure members are movable against the force generated by their elastic deformation to move the device into one of at least three stable positions, in which the device, and therefore the aerodynamic or hydrodynamic surface, are held by the force generated by elastic deformation of the flexure members. Since the flexure members are always elastically deformed, the device “snaps” between discrete, stable positions and is held firmly in each. In another embodiment more flexure members can be used to provide additional stable positions. In one application, the actuating device is used as a trailing edge tab for a helicopter or tiltrotor blade to reduce 1/rev vibrations. The device can be actuated manually or electrically using shape-memory alloy wires to snap the flexure members into their various stable positions.

    Abstract: A combustion chamber has an outer wall for mechanically supporting the combustion chamber and an inner wall forming an internal space through which combustion gases flow from a chamber inlet to a chamber outlet. An envelope is defined between the inner and outer walls and an intermediate wall divides the envelope into inner and outer cooling spaces. The cooling steam enters the outer space and exits the inner space, and the intermediate wall has a plurality of orifices through which cooling steam passes for impact cooling the inside of the inner wall. The inner wall is imperforate so that the cooling steam does not enter the internal combustion chamber space. The cooling steam flow in accordance with the invention increases cooling efficiency.

Each coating has an inner contact area facing the supporting body and an outer contact area facing away from the supporting body. Each of the two coatings and the supporting body are electrically connected to a plug-in contact that includes an electrically conductive elastomer in a cavity in the connecting body. The elastomer is partially elastically deformed by a contact pin inserted thereinto. As a result of the ease with which electrical connections can thus be made to the transducers, this arrangement is particulary adapted for incorporation into a transducer module with plural transducers secured adjacent to each other in a common connector base.

    Abstract: A fire fighting system uses a bucket suspended from a helicopter to deposit fire retardant onto a fire from an opening in the bottom of the bucket. The bucket has a predetermined configuration and a valve for controlling the area of an opening through which the retardant is deposited when the bucket is suspended from the helicopter. A suitable mechanism, such as an electrically driven valve actuator, varies the area of the opening to deposit the retardant at a volume flow rate as a desired function of time while the helicopter flies along a drop line. The mechanism varies the area of the opening in accordance with a schedule determined before discharge is begun according to the configuration of the bucket, the flow characteristics of the opening as the valve changes the area thereof, and the initial amount of the retardant material in the bucket.
