Abstract: Support systems for vessels such as above-ground swimming pools are disclosed. Each system may include one or more buttresses adapted to support substantially the entire vertical height of the side wall or each of a series of side walls of the pool. A strapless support system to provide a pool having a deep end is also disclosed. The buttresses, which flare along their lengths, closely match the support they provide each side wall to the outward water pressure present along its height for enhanced reliability. The diminished space required for installation of the disclosed buttresses reduces the surface area required for their associated pool.

Abstract: The invention provides a helical device and method of producing same for engagement with a cable, the helical device comprising a single length of metal strip comprising a first helical section, a second non-helical section, and a third helical section, the end of either or both the first and third helical sections remote the second helical section being flared away from the longitudinal axis of the helix, the flaring being in the form of a section of spiral helix form.

Abstract: Alternative collar assemblies for use with watercraft including rigid-hulled boats are described. The collars may include both foam materials and one or more inflatable compartments, thereby offering multiple advantages over existing foam or inflatable collars. Optionally included in or on the collars are reinforcing material (such as but not limited to Kevlar) and an abrasion-resistant coating surrounding the foam and inflatable compartments.

Abstract: Collar assemblies for use with watercraft including rigid-hulled boats are disclosed. Collars of the assemblies may surround or envelope all or most of the perimeters of boats and provide increased buoyancy at least at their sterns. The collars typically are split, rather than continuous, both to facilitate installation and to reduce risk of damage during the installation process.

Abstract: A system consisting of an accelerometer sensor attached to a centrifuge enclosure for sensing vibrations and outputting a signal in the form of a sine wave with an amplitude and frequency that is passed through a pre-amp to convert it to a voltage signal, a low pass filter for removing extraneous noise, an A/D converter and a processor and algorithm for operating on the signal, whereby the algorithm interprets the amplitude and frequency associated with the signal and once an amplitude threshold has been exceeded the algorithm begins to count cycles during a predetermined time period and if a given number of complete cycles exceeds the frequency threshold during the predetermined time period, the system shuts down the centrifuge.

Abstract: An illumination system for illuminating a spatial light modulator. An integrator rod is positioned in the light path between an arc lamp and the spatial light modulator. At the input surface of the integrated rod, there is positioned a field lens for defocusing areas of turbulence within the arc lamp. In the output surface of the integrated rod there is positioned a plate effective to prevent dust from being attracted to the output surface of the integrator rod. The integrator rod is effective to combine light from two separate light sources.

Abstract: A cradle 13 for a handset for a telephone or other electronic apparatus is dimensioned to fit within a chair arm, for example an aircraft seat arm. The cradle includes an integral cord spool 16 having a rewind bias spring 34, and a catch (not shown) for maintaining the handset in the cradle. The cord is locked in an extended condition by a braking cam 53, releasable for rewinding the cord by a pushbutton 36. Latching means 54 are provided for maintaining the pushbutton depressed until the cord is rewound. Other brake and latching means, including a ratchet and pawl arrangement, are disclosed.

Abstract: Reformation techniques and apparatus. Typically employed to permit separate printing and finishing of multiple webs of paper, these techniques and apparatus utilize or provide heat and, in some cases, initial tension, to change dimensions (including repeat length) of the paper of one or more webs. Webs dimensionally-reformed in accordance with the techniques typically do not require subsequent variation of tension to maintain appropriate dimension, permitting any such tension variation to occur solely to enhance other aspects of the finishing processes.

Abstract: Deflectors for inflatable watercraft or other objects are disclosed. The deflectors themselves may be inflatable and distinct from the crafts to which they are attached. They thus may be used to increase the height of the crafts without changing the dimensions of the tubes from which the crafts are formed or diminishing the cockpit space available within the crafts.

Abstract: The present invention relates to compositions and methods for treating water to reduce the phosphate level thereof and control the growth therein of algae and other microorganisms by treating the water with an effective amount of a composition containing a lanthanide halide.

Abstract: Techniques and equipment for evaluating structural integrity of buried anchor rods in situ are disclosed. The techniques avoid excavation of soil and avoid, or at least reduce, the possibility of damage to the rods or the concrete in which they may be embedded when evaluations are conducted. Instead, ultrasonic energy is transmitted through the rod from a portable transducer, and returned energy (in either or both of direct and mode-converted states) may be analyzed to assist in detecting flaws, corrosion, wastage, or other degradation of the rod. Data from a field evaluation may be compared with baseline data maintained either for a specific rod or for rods of similar composition and length (or both), and periodic field evaluations of a rod may be used to analyze trends in its structure over time.

Abstract: Support structures, systems, and methods are disclosed. Among the support structures are pallets designed especially, although not necessarily exclusively, for cold-weather environments such as commercial refrigerators and freezers and refrigerated transport carriers. Such pallets may include non-skid materials and optionally are recyclable, have improved stacking and load-bearing attributes, and incorporate recycled materials.

Abstract: A damping roller for printing presses and a method for the production thereof, wherein a heat injected microporous special steel coating is applied to a cylindrical base body, is described. The average pore body of said coating is approximately 5 &mgr;m. A thicker moistening agent film is obtained by capillary force thereby enabling a higher moistening agent flow rate in the damping system of an off-set printing press.

Abstract: A method for detecting the presence of a target nucleic acid sequence in a sample is provided. The method comprises subjecting the sample to an amplification reaction to obtain an amplification product where the target nucleic acid sequence is present using a set of nucleotides, at least one of which is fluorescently labelled. The amplification product is contacted with a probe under conditions in which the probe will hybridise to the target sequence. The probe comprises a reactive molecule which is capable of absorbing fluorescence energy from or donating fluorescent energy to the fluorescent labelled nucleotide. The fluorescence of the sample is monitored and related to the presence of the target nucleic acid sequence. The method can be used to quantitate the amount of target nucleic acid in the sample as well as to determine sequence characteristics. Kits for effecting the method are also provided.

At least one pair of slots near a floor of the hollow central region receives at least one printed card, with a magnifying lens mounted in an upper region of the hollow central region. A separate enclosure having an illumination bulb mounted therein is provided in one of the hollow sides, with batteries mounted in another hollow side. An opening in the enclosure passes light across the central region, providing indirect illumination of the card.

Abstract: A multi-ply promotional label having a detachable game piece according to the present invention includes peripheral and perforation geometry that reduces the likelihood of intentional or inadvertent premature viewing of game indicia on the detachable piece. The label, moreover, may include multiple detachable game pieces. Deleterious effects of increased tensile stress along perforations due to the presence of multiple detachable game pieces or other factors are overcome by applying an adhesive to removably couple a preselected region of a downwardly facing aspect of a detachable game piece to an underlying base ply. The upward face of the same base ply may be printed to increase the available printable area in order, for example, to further instruct players on game procedures.

Abstract: A method and system for remotely accessing a multi-point cross-platform telephone conferencing system for the purpose of coordinating and initiating multi-point telephone conference meetings utilizing intelligent agents and network based software application modules (i.e., contact lists, email, calendars, etc.) to facilitate the setup and initiation of telephone conference calls from locations remote to the cross-platform teleconferencing system. A coordinator, with the assistance of software agents resident on a coordinating server device and menu screens resident on the networked terminal device selects subscribers for inclusion in the telephone conference (with or without information modification), inputs attribute data and contact information for non-subscribers to be included in the telephone conference and inputs descriptive information including an identifier, proposed times and duration for the proposed telephone conference.
