  • Patent number: 6651431
Abstract: An inlet air compressor for an internal combustion engine is provided which has one inlet and a plurality of outlets. Within the compressor are disposed a plurality of diffusers coupled to the plurality of outlets. The flow is divided among the plurality of outlets so that at conditions of low overall flow rate through the engine, which would, in a compressor according to the prior art, ordinarily surge, allow the flow to be substantially discontinued through one or more diffusers and continue at through the remaining diffusers. In this way, the diffusers with flow operate within an acceptable operating range and avoid a surging condition. The present invention is directed to engines having a wide range of flow rates. A couple of examples are gasoline engines and variable displacement engines.

  • Patent number: 6644020
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for regenerating a particulate filter in the exhaust system of a diesel engine, an increase in the temperature of the exhaust gases being brought about by post-injection of fuel. The intake pressure (MAP) and/or the air mass flow rate (MAF) are reduced as a function of the ambient temperature of the engine and preferably also when the engine load is low by throttling the engine. In this way, the proportions of burned or unburned post-injected fuel can be stabilized.

  • Patent number: 6589034
Abstract: The invention relates to the design of backflow orifices for a rotary compressor serving as a compressor for an engine. One example of such a rotary compressor is a roots blower. The fluid conveyed by two oppositely rotating rotors from an inlet to an outlet of the compressor flows back partially via the backflow orifices. The edges of the backflow orifices are at a varying height from an inner surface contour of the pump casing. The height variation contributes to a reduction in the noise generated by the compressor.

  • Patent number: 6574956
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for interrupting the regeneration of a particulate filter in the exhaust gas system of a diesel engine to protect the filter against destructive overheating. In this case, an electronic control unit calculates a desired mass air mass flow rate (MAFdes) based on engine speed (n), fuel supply (Fq) to the engine, and air/fuel ratio (A/Fdes). A mass air flow rate regulator controls the position of an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve as a function of the difference between the desired mass air mass flow rate (MAFdes) and the measured mass air flow rate (MAFmes). An intake manifold absolute pressure controller adjusts the position of an intake throttle valve as a function of the difference between the measured intake manifold absolute pressure (MAPmes) and the modified intake manifold absolute pressure (MAPmod). MAPmod is determined by a coordination module, based on the mass air flow rate error and other parameters.

  • Patent number: 6571760
Abstract: An air inlet manifold for a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine having a distribution chamber restricted by at least a first internal wall and a plurality of pipe channels each restricted by at least a second internal wall, which pipe inlet is described by a first surface with a first area restricted by a first line in the boundary between the pipe inlet and the first internal wall The pipe channel is described by a second surface with a second area restricted by a second line along the perimeter of the pipe channel, the second surface is generally perpendicular to the extension direction of the pipe channel. A profile between the first line and the second line in a pipe located proximate to the air inlet has a different curvature than a profile between the first line and the second line in a pipe located distant from the air inlet.

  • Patent number: 6532944
Abstract: A fuel vapor recovery method and system are disclosed for an engine with a hybrid valvetrain, in which the intake valves are actuated by more than one type of device. Normal fuel vapor recovery purging relies on a depression in intake manifold pressure to cause the flow of purge gases through the fuel vapor recovery system and into the intake manifold. As the hybrid valvetrain engine is unthrottled over much of the engine operating map, purging the fuel vapor recovery system requires decreasing the intake manifold pressure to allow a purge condition. Making a transition to a condition with a depressed manifold pressure is the subject herein.
