  • Patent number: 6474303
Abstract: A method for selecting which intake valves are operated in an internal combustion with intake valves operated by more than one type of actuation device is disclosed. A criterion for selecting which valves to operate is energy consumed in operating the valvetrain.

  • Patent number: 6471133
Abstract: A thermostat cartridge assembly 14 for a cooling system 10 of an automotive vehicle 12 including a housing 50. The housing 50 includes a first opening 62, a second opening 68, and a direct-flow opening 72. A thermostat mechanism 80 located at least partially within the housing 50 adjusts the amount of coolant flowing between the first opening 62, the second opening 68, and the direct-flow opening 72. An attachment mechanism 52 attaches the thermostat cartridge assembly 14 to the cooling system 10. A releasing mechanism 54 engages and disengages the thermostat cartridge assembly 14 to and from the cooling system 10.

  • Patent number: 6470853
Abstract: A method and system for controlling intake valves in an internal combustion with intake valves operated by more than one type of actuation device includes defining operating modes of the intake valve and mapping these onto engine torque and engine speed operating regions. Torque control within regions and steps to accomplish smooth transitions among regions are defined.

  • Patent number: 6467258
Abstract: A method and arrangement for control of a combustion engine (11) having control elements (4, 5, 17) for generation of an air/fuel mixture to each cylinder (3) of the engine (1), an exhaust system (7, 8) which is connected to the engine (1), an exhaust catalyst (10) and a NOx absorbent (11) which are provided in the exhaust system (7, 8), which method comprises: control of the control elements (4, 5, 17) in a first operating condition for generation of a comparatively lean exhaust gas mixture to the NOx adsorbent (11) for adsorption of NOx compounds in the exhaust gas mixture, and control of the control elements (4, 5, 17) in a second operating condition for generation of a comparatively rich exhaust gas mixture to the NOx absorbent (11) for desorption of NOx compounds in the exhaust gas mixture.

  • Patent number: 6443108
Abstract: A system and a method for operating an internal combustion engine at a six-stroke, eight-stroke, or greater number of strokes cycle is disclosed. The combustion of the fuel and air is accomplished in two combustion steps with at least one expansion and compression process in between the two combustions, with the second combustion occurring at a stoichiometric air-fuel ratio. The first combustion at lean air-fuel ratio provides high efficiency. The products of the first combustion are subjected to a second combustion event at stoichiometric air-fuel ratio. Consequently, high conversion efficiency of nitrogen oxides in the exhaust aftertreatment device, available at stoichiometric conditions, can be achieved.
