Abstract: A separable fastener for holding two objects together with the use of a bolt threaded into the fastener. The necessary inherent axial tension in the bolt/fastener system is accommodated by a relief element which relieves at least some of the stored tension before the nut separates, thereby reducing the physical shock on the assembly. The energy needed to separate the nut and bolt is entirely contained within the system so that pyrotechnic devices are unnecessary for the purpose.
Abstract: A system to restrict and remove debris and pollutants from runoff water received from surrounding areas. A receptacle receives the runoff water, and a grate detains the heavier part of its solids burden. A first screen within the receptacle detains solids of lesser size. Water passed by the first screen encounters a tubular second screen in the receptacle which passes water that was additionally screened by it and sends it to a downstream system. A weir at a sensitive level in the receptacle can by-pass the second screen. The second screen is preferably rotatable.
Abstract: A raw stream of freshly harvested processor tomatoes which includes desired crop, substandard crop and detritus is subjected to successive scannings and separations to produce an improved collection of tomatoes of increased value to the processor.
Abstract: Adaptive modification of surface properties such as color, temperature and reflective properties by adjustably varying the temperature of a surface perceived by an observer, utilizing Peltier devices at the surface for temperature adjustment.
Abstract: A toilet tank flushing system including a ballcock valve for maintaining a storage level of water in the tank, a tank valve to release stored water on demand, and a linkage system which requires a reduced physical effort to initiate flushing. A hollow, open-ended closure for the tank valve enables a large cross-section area of discharge port to be used, and which can pass bowl refill water during the flushing sequence.
Abstract: A foldable carrier to transport a person in a seated posture. The carrier has a bottom panel, two side panels, and a back panel. On the outside of the two side panels are at least one rank of anchors, preferably two, to which handles can be engaged to assist lifting the person in the carrier.
Abstract: A subgrade vault to provide an enclosed housing for utility connections. The housing is made of a moldable material with a reinforcing skirt at one end and a seat in the other. A lid is received in the seat to close its upper end. A clip is optionally provided for fastening the lid to the housing body that can be clipped on the body and engaged by a fastener carried by the lid.
Abstract: An underground irrigation system which supplies beneath the surface of the soil under or near the roots of a growing crop, water infused with micro bubbles of gas (usually air). A mixer/injector injects and mixes gas into water to form a mixed stream that flows from a header into a plurality of branches. The mixed stream emits from the branches. An air bleed releases gas from the system which has separated from the mixed stream.
Abstract: An axially actuated drain valve for pools and spas mountable in a wall thereof. It includes a tubular body and a coaxial plunger. The body opens into the spa or pool at an inner end. The plunger has a passage opening near the outer end of its passage. A cylindrical seal engages with a seal on the plunger for a substantial range of movement to keep the valve closed. Beyond that, the plunger passage is opened for flow from the body passage opening. The plunger may have threads on its outer end to be coupled to a hose fitting.
Abstract: A shaft coupler to connect two coaxial segments of a drive shaft. Each segment includes a tongue, which tongues complement each other to transmit torque and resist axial separation. A bearing surface on each tongue lies within the locking angle of their material so as to resist lateral separation of the segments.
Abstract: A system to exclude trash from curbside drains during periods of no or slow water flow, but opening to permit full entry during heavier flow such as during heavy rains. The system may have a linkage preventing opening by force on its barrier, and to assure that it will remain open should downstream drainage systems become flooded.
Abstract: A painter's belt-mounted paint and brush holder especially adapted for stability relative to the painter. It includes an open topped bucket with a rim that drains into the bucket cavity, and a stabilizer integral with the wall of the bucket that rises above the bucket with a substantial area that is drawn against the body of the painter.
Abstract: Separation and extraction of gas from a liquid, utilizing centrifugal forces. The area of the lateral spacing between an inner circular centrifugal surface and the outer wall of an internal extractor diminishes toward an outlet. The wall of the extractor is pierced by slots whose walls calm the inward flow of gas into the interior of the extractor.
Abstract: A trap for a curbside drain opening to exclude solids of excessive size from the drain and trap them for analysis and recovery. The trap has a face which will open at high rates of water flow to avert flooding that might be or caused by plugging the drain opening. A filter is optionally provided to remove selected pollutants from the water stream for recovery and analysis.
Abstract: A barrier to exclude trash and debris from storm drains wich includes a pivoted gate moved by a vane-type rotor. The rotor is actuated to open an entry to the storm drain by flow of water at a rate above and agreeable minimum, and to maintain it closed at no or low flow rates.
