Abstract: A process for aligning liquid crystals adjacent to a surface of an optical alignment layer comprising: exposing at least one optical alignment layer, comprising anisotropically absorbing molecules, to polarized light; the polarized light having a wavelength within the absorption band of said anisotropically absorbing molecules; wherein the exposed anisotropically absorbing molecules induce alignment of a liquid crystal medium at an angle + and - with respect to the direction of the polarization of the incident light beam and along the surface of the optical alignment layer; and applying a liquid crystal medium to said optical alignment layer; wherein said anisotropically absorbing molecules consist essentially of diaryl ketones, is described.

Abstract: A device for measuring the natural bending strength of a sheet material, and for measuring the bending strength of a creased or scored portion of the sheet material, and for dynamically analyzing such test results. The device has a rotatable clamp, a load sensor, a data processing unit, and a data displaying unit. The load sensor is positioned to directly contact the sheet material being held by the clamp. The clamp and sheet material can be rotated so that the sheet material presses against the load sensor, and the data processing unit will then determine the resistance force detected by the load sensor and will determine the amount of rotation associated with that force, and the resulting data are then processed, stored, and can be displayed as output data in a predetermined form.
Abstract: The present invention relates to amine compositions and the preparation of polyimides. The polyimides can be used for inducing alignment of a liquid crystal medium with polarized light and liquid crystal display elements.

Abstract: A loose-fill cellulose insulation having improved density can be achieved by intermingling the cellulose fibers with natural textile fibers. The textile fibers tend to maintain the spacing between the cellulose fibers, which decreases the density and minimizes settling, of the resulting insulation.

Abstract: An aqueous coating composition comprising an acrylic resin-modified epoxy resin (D), which is obtained by the reaction between a mixture of a bisphenol F based epoxy resin (A) and a bisphenol F based phenoxy resin (B) and an acrylic resin having carboxyl functionality (C), said acrylic resin-modified epoxy resin (D) being dispersed into water, preferably by using ammonia or amine, provides a composition with low viscosity, excellent storage stability and excellent application workability. In addition, the coating of the present invention can be applied to an interior surface and the resulting film has a smooth surface, excellent processability, excellent retorting resistant properties, excellent adhesion properties, and excellent corrosion resistant properties.
Abstract: An in-line muzzle-loading firearm in which the firing pin is cocked by a bolt action permits the use of a stronger firing pin spring, a firing pin of reduced mass, and reduced firing pin travel, resulting in reduced lock times.
Abstract: Lightweight hyperbaric chamber capable of maintaining pressures of up to 22 psi greater than ambient through the use of at least two zippers, at least one of which is a sealing zipper, and preferably with heavy fabric and a reinforcing outer layer.
Abstract: A reclosable container for containing a liquid or powder product and for dispensing the product as desired is provided. The container includes a bag made of flexible material, at one end of which is a retractable neck portion. A dispensing cap having a biased slider arm slidably mounted on the dispensing cap is provided on the neck portion. The slider arm allows the product to be dispensed from the container as desired.
Abstract: A composition having major concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium; trace quantities of aluminum and other metals; and chelating agent provides excellent protection against frost and stimulates growth of plants.
Abstract: A process for formation of a water repellent coating which comprises applying a topcoat coating composition of a fluorine containing thermosetting resin and granular compound of 5 microns or less in mean particle size to a substrate bearing a thermosetting undercoat coating film which is semi crosslinked, and then co-curing both films by heating. The resulting cured coating has a water repellent surface, excellent adhesion to a substrate, excellent corrosion resistance, no staying of water as droplets on the surface and no foul odor. The coating is especially suitable for applying to aluminum fins of a heat exchanger.
