  • Patent number: 5965691
Abstract: A process for aligning liquid crystals adjacent to a surface of an optical alignment layer comprising: exposing at least one optical alignment layer, comprising anisotropically absorbing molecules, to polarized light; the polarized light having a wavelength within the absorption band of said anisotropically absorbing molecules; wherein the exposed anisotropically absorbing molecules induce alignment of a liquid crystal medium at an angle + and - with respect to the direction of the polarization of the incident light beam and along the surface of the optical alignment layer; and applying a liquid crystal medium to said optical alignment layer; wherein said anisotropically absorbing molecules consist essentially of diaryl ketones, is described.

  • Patent number: 5955680
Abstract: A device for measuring the natural bending strength of a sheet material, and for measuring the bending strength of a creased or scored portion of the sheet material, and for dynamically analyzing such test results. The device has a rotatable clamp, a load sensor, a data processing unit, and a data displaying unit. The load sensor is positioned to directly contact the sheet material being held by the clamp. The clamp and sheet material can be rotated so that the sheet material presses against the load sensor, and the data processing unit will then determine the resistance force detected by the load sensor and will determine the amount of rotation associated with that force, and the resulting data are then processed, stored, and can be displayed as output data in a predetermined form.

  • Patent number: 5910367
Abstract: A loose-fill cellulose insulation having improved density can be achieved by intermingling the cellulose fibers with natural textile fibers. The textile fibers tend to maintain the spacing between the cellulose fibers, which decreases the density and minimizes settling, of the resulting insulation.

  • Patent number: 5616388
Abstract: A process for formation of a water repellent coating which comprises applying a topcoat coating composition of a fluorine containing thermosetting resin and granular compound of 5 microns or less in mean particle size to a substrate bearing a thermosetting undercoat coating film which is semi crosslinked, and then co-curing both films by heating. The resulting cured coating has a water repellent surface, excellent adhesion to a substrate, excellent corrosion resistance, no staying of water as droplets on the surface and no foul odor.
