  • Patent number: 5305087
Abstract: A sensor is to measure a physical quantity which causes a non-reciprocal effect, such as the Sagnac-effect, in an optical ring resonator. This effect provides a difference of clockwise and counter-clockwise optical path lengths in the ring resonator. The difference is proportional to the physical quantity, such as rotation rate in the case of the Sagnac-effect. A semiconductor laser is coupled to the ring resonator and generates clockwise and counter-clockwise beams therein. The laser frequency is modulated by directly energizing the semiconductor laser such that sidebands of the frequency-modulated laser beams are in resonance with the ring resonator. A detector device responds to the difference of the clockwise and counter-clockwise light beams and generates a signal indicative of the measured physical quantity.

  • Patent number: 5286561
Abstract: The present invention provides: (a) a method for producing a poly(arylene sulfide)(PAS) resin composition: (b) a PAS resin composition produced by the inventive resin composition production method; (c) a method which utilizes the inventive PAS resin composition in the production of a continuous fiber-reinforced composite; and (d) a PAS composite produced by the inventive composite production method. The PAS resin composition produced by the inventive resin composition production method comprises a crystallizable arylene sulfide polymer and a nucleating agent. The nucleating agent is admixed with the crystallizable arylene sulfide polymer by adding said nucleating agent to the polymerization reaction system. The inventive PAS resin composition solidifies to a fine-grained crystalline morphology and is well suited for use in the production of continuous fiber-reinforced composites, molded articles, and other products.

  • Patent number: 5284298
Abstract: A fluid-conducting swivel includes an upstream conduit, downstream conduit, and support assembly for holding the upstream and downstream conduit with their flow passageways aligned, allowing rotation of one of the upstream and downstream conduit, and maintaining a space between the adjacent ends of the conduit. The upstream conduit includes an acceleration nozzle for accelerating the velocity of the fluid flow to such a velocity that the fluid creates a substantially self-contained fluid jet. The downstream conduit includes a deceleration nozzle for decelerating the velocity of the fluid flow and a downstream throat extending between the deceleration nozzle and the end of the downstream conduit adjacent the upstream conduit. The downstream throat receives the accelerated fluid from the upstream conduit and is sized to substantially prevent expansion of the accelerated fluid and thereby prevent fluid leakage and pressure loss between the upstream and downstream conduit.

  • Patent number: 5282652
Abstract: A lined pipe joint with an improved collar seal and pipe lining end therefor. The pipe lining end is disposed at the end of the liner in the pipe. The lining end is adapted to shoulder against grouting material which holds the liner in place such that longitudinal contraction of the liner is prevented. The lining end also has a tapered bore therein which compensates for any inward deflection of the pipe section when threadingly engaged with a pipe fitting. The collar seal fits within the end of a pipe section which is to be connected to a pipe fitting. A sealing check valve on the collar seal provides sealing between the collar seal and the pipe section when pressure within the pipe section is greater than pressure outside the collar seal. The sealing check valve allows relief of pressure outside the collar seal into the pipe section when the pipe section is depressurized, so that damaging inward deflection of the pipe liner is prevented. A method of assembling the pipe joint is also disclosed.

Abstract: A base pad for supporting heavy, vibrating machinery with minimal environmental pollution, the pad including a peripheral frame of rigid beams, a grid of reenforcing rods extending across the interior of the peripheral frame between the beams, and a cementitious filler within the peripheral frame. Flanged channel beams extend across the peripheral frame in spaced pairs and form a series of spaced anchor slots opening upwardly through the cementitious material, and also form liquid drains beneath the slots. The drains communicate through openings through the beams with aligned discharge spouts secured to the beams. A plurality of intercommunicating, peripheral, upwardly opening V-gutters are disposed in the cementitious filler adjacent the peripheral frame beams, and are connected to drain liquid into the liquid drains.
