  • Patent number: 5642824
Abstract: A closure is provided for a container opening. The closure includes a base for mounting to the container and a lid movable between a closed position and an open position. The lid and base are connected by a bistable, snap-action hinge structure of the type that includes a web having a central portion between two wider ends wherein an arcuate film hinge connects the base to the web along one side of the web between the ends and wherein an arcuate film hinge connects the lid to the web along another side of the web between the ends. The hinge structure includes an abutment surface located so that when the lid is in a closed position, the abutment surface extends adjacent the web's central portion from an elevation adjacent one of the film hinges to an elevation that is preferably adjacent or higher than the other film hinge. The abutment surface is contacted by the web's central portion as the lid is closed or opened whereby the position of the web is controlled.

  • Patent number: 5623806
Abstract: Apparatus for rapid interchanging of different ramping mechanisms for capping equipment. When capping equipment is to be changed from providing roll-on closures to glass bottles to providing threaded plastic closures to plastic bottles, the positions of the bottles relative to the capping turret mechanism must be altered by changing the ramping mechanisms guiding the bottles. The ramping mechanism is maintained in position by a locking plate engaging a resilient connection connected to the ramping mechanism. The apparatus is designed so that when the locking plate is slightly rotated, the ramping mechanism can be readily removed and a different one inserted. Rotation of the locking plate in the other direction locks the new ramping mechanism in place.

  • Patent number: 5595820
Abstract: This invention provides an improved coating composition for glass substrates that comprises a poly(siloxane). The introduction of a poly(siloxane) in a coating composition for a glass substrate, and in particular an optical fiber, acts to delay the rate of deterioration of the glass or optical fiber due to moisture, and improves adhesion between the glass substrate and the coating composition. The introduction of a poly(siloxane) into a polymeric coating composition also improves the interlayer adhesion when more than one coating is applied to a glass substrate. This invention also provides an improved coated glass substrate having a decreased rate of deterioration due to moisture, improved adhesion between the glass substrate and the coating composition and between the various coatings, wherein the coating composition comprises a poly(siloxane).

  • Patent number: 5596251
Abstract: A system for cutting molten plastic material for compression molding includes a rotary-driven cutter mounted in operative association with an extruder which supplies molten plastic. The cutter is driven by a servo motor, the operation of which is coordinated with an associated rotary carousel on which cavities are successively presented to the cutter apparatus. In order to effect separation of each cut discrete quantity of plastic material from the cutting blade of the cutter apparatus, the servo motor is operated to create a period of distinct deceleration during each rotary cutting cycle, thereby effecting separation of the molten plastic from the surface of the cutting blade. The electronic controls of the apparatus further operate to permit the speed at which plastic cutting takes place to be controlled independently of the speed of the associated rotary carousel, while coordinating each cutting cycle with successive presentation of the cavities by the rotary carousel.

  • Patent number: 5593574
Abstract: The invention relates to a water treatment system and more particularly to a fish tank and biofilter for use in a fish aquaculture. The fish tank has a double outlet system whereby solid waste particles are drawn continually into a central well by a trickle of water flowing through the well and out stand-pipe apparatus exterior of the tank. Clarified water is withdrawn from the center of the fish tank through a manifold having an outlet above the well and conducted to a spray bar of a separate biofilter apparatus. The biofilter includes a rotating spray bar distributing water over a bed of floating media pellets, the water exiting the spray bar causing momentarily and cyclically dynamic flow loading of the bed of pellets below it whereby the pellets are gently agitated.

  • Patent number: 5564582
Abstract: A tamper-indicating plastic closure includes an annular pilfer band which is partially detachably connected to the skirt portion of the closure, whereby the pilfer band remains connected to the closure after closure removal from an associate container. The pilfer band includes a fracturable region which fractures during closure removal, whereby the pilfer band splits and separates. The fracturable region is defined by a pair of circumferentially and vertically spaced, staggered scores which are configured to facilitate high-speed manufacture, and consistent tamper-indication. In one embodiment, one of the scores extends through one of a plurality of container-engaging projections of the pilfer band.

  • Patent number: 5558264
Abstract: A combustion-powered, fastener-driving tool comprises a structure defining a combustion chamber and defining a driving piston cylinder, which has a wall and defines an axis. A nosepiece is mounted to said structure and communicates with the driving piston cylinder. A driving piston mounting a driving member is arranged to be axially driven within the wall of the driving piston cylinder upon combustion of a fuel in the combustion chamber, so as to drive the driving member from an uppermost position wherein the driving member is retracted from the nosepiece into a lowermost position wherein the driving member is extended into the nosepiece. A combusted gases-actuated mechanism is employed for feeding fasteners from a collated strip of fasteners individually and successively into the nosepiece. Combusted gases are diverted from the driving piston cylinder so as to actuate the feeding mechanism when the driving piston is driven.

  • Patent number: 5557999
Abstract: A method and apparatus for manufacturing a plastic closure particularly to facilitate orientation of the closure so that a manufacturing process, such as vertical scoring, can be effected at one of at least one predetermined portion of the closure. Such orientation is achieved by the provision of an orientation mandrel on to which the closure is moved. The closure is initially rotated relative to the orientation mandrel, with a stop mechanism of the mandrel thereafter engaging the closure and stopping such relative rotation. The stop mechanism of the mandrel is configured in a predetermined orientation with respect to an associated component of the apparatus, which in the illustrated embodiment comprises a vertical scoring mechanism. By this manufacturing technique, a closure having a tamper-indicating pilfer band can be scored and cut at a particular portion of the band, such as between container-engaging projections of the pilfer band.

  • Patent number: 5553505
Abstract: An electronic fluid flowmeter includes an LSI digital device and an LSI analog device. The digital device drives a pair of acoustic transducers to transmit acoustic waves within a fluid, the flow of which is being measured. The acoustic waves are received within the analogue device, the moment of arrival being determined by envelope detection associated with the phase of the received signal. The reception of a signal stops a counter within the digital device, the value in the counter representing the time of flight of the acoustic signals within the fluid. Fluid flow data can be stored on an EEPROM from which meter data can be read using a liquid crystal display or via an interface port to an external device.
