  • Patent number: 5096396
Abstract: Improvements are disclosed in a rotary, lobar, positive-displacement pump and in a rotary, centrifugal pump, whereby all product-contacting areas of the pumps can be effectively cleaned without disassembly, i.e., cleaned in place. Non-rotating seals seal the impellers and isolate the pump shafts from the product zone. Each seal has an elastomeric member molded integrally thereto. The seal is biased by the elastomeric member so as to be slidably pressed against an impeller. In the lobar pump, certain passageways can be selectively closed and opened, so as to adapt the pump for being used to pump a pumpable material when closed and for being cleaned by a cleaning solution flowing therethrough when opened. Valves may be alternatively provided for analogous purposes.

  • Patent number: 5092949
Abstract: A method of making a laminated, thermally imageable tag, such as a baggage tag, as made from a top sheet. The top sheet is precoated on one surface with a thermally sensitive material. A hot-melt adhesive is applied to the bottom sheet. The top sheet, the reinforcing fibers, and the bottom sheet are pressed together, as by two pressing rolls defining a nip. A laminate thus is formed with the reinforcing fibers between the top and bottom sheets. The hot-melt adhesive is applied and the top sheet, the reinforcing fibers, and the bottom sheet are pressed together under conditions insuring that the thermally sensitive material is not heated to its activation temperature by heat transfer from the hot-melt adhesive, through the top sheet, to the thermally sensitive material.

  • Patent number: 5093923
Abstract: A method for optimizing antenna orientation in a cellular radio telephone system with respect to a predetermined criterion of signal level includes the steps of orienting the antenna in a selected direction, sensing a selected received signal in a predetermined frequency range, mixing the selected received signal with the control signal so as to generate a corresponding intermediate frequency signal in an intermediate frequency transmission path, measuring a selected parameter of the intermediate frequency signal and then altering the orientation of the antenna while subsequently repeating the required steps. The preferred antenna orientation can be determined by examining the results of the various measurements and selecting an antenna orientation which maximizes the signal level of the desired received signal.

  • Patent number: 5090184
Abstract: A system for controlling the elevation of a harvesting unit of a cotton harvester relative to a ground surface. The control system includes a valve assembly whose position controls operation of a lift mechanism connected to the harvesting unit and which is operated by a ground contour sensor assembly carried by the harvesting unit. Harvesting unit elevation is correlated with the extent that the ground contour sensor assembly moves relative to the harvesting unit. The ground contour sensor assembly includes a shoe with a ground engaging surface wherein such surface is movable vertically relative to the harvesting unit and also is pivotable sideways about a fore-and-aft extending axis thereby enhancing ground contact of the sensor assembly with the ground contour.

  • Patent number: 5085616
Abstract: A cleaning system for a combine including a fan and reciprocal sieves mounted within a housing of the combine. The sieves include a series of transversely extending slats which are selectively adjustable to allow clean grain to pass therethrough. A plurality of transversely adjacent baffles extend in a fore-and-aft direction along substantially the entire length of and for a relatively short distance above an upper distance of the sieves. The baffles have a cumulative effect of inhibiting a disproportionate granular accumulation of granular material adjacent the downhill side of the sieves when the harvesting apparatus is tilted during slope harvesting. Each of the baffles are movable conjointly with and in response to adjustment of the slats of the sieves.
