  • Patent number: 5187086
Abstract: An antibody molecule or molecule containing antibody combining site portions (catalytic molecule) that catalytically hydrolyzes a preselected carboxylic acid amide or ester bond of a reactant ligand, methods of making and using the catalytic molecule, and cells that produce those molecules are disclosed. The catalytic molecules bind to a reactant ligand containing the bond to be hydrolyzed and also to a haptenic ligand. The haptenic ligand is structurally analogous to the reactant ligand and contains a tetrahedral carbon atom that is bonded to a hydroxyl group and to a saturated carbon atom at a position in the haptenic ligand that corresponds to position of the carbonyl group and its bonded heteroatom of the reactant ligand. The haptenic ligand also contains a group that bears an ionic charge in aqueous solution at physiological pH values that is not present at a corresponding position of the reactant ligand. The ionic charge-bearing group is located in the hapten within 7 .ANG.

  • Patent number: 5184448
Abstract: A machine and related method for clipping a succession of generally planar sheets according to U.S. Pat. No. 4,974,726 onto a succession of rectangular arrays of cans of a type having an end with a chime. Each sheet has two lines of can-stabilizing strips defined by generally parallel slits and two longitudinal edge portions defined thereby. Successive arrays of cans are registered in such manner that successive cans are spaced regularly and are conveyed with one such sheet overlying the cans of each array. After transversely spaced wheels engage successive edge portions of successive sheets to clip such edge portions beneath the chimes of adjacent cans being conveyed, successive lobes of transversely spaced, lobar wheels engage of successive strips of successive sheets as successive arrays are conveyed. The arrays of cans are registered relative to the lobes of the lobar wheels.

  • Patent number: 5179610
Abstract: A coupling system for coupling a beam of radiant energy from a laser to a fiber optic cable includes a secondary transmission path which surrounds the input end of the fiber optic cable and provides an optical path for energy which is not transmitted by the fiber optic core but is lost. Displaced from an output end of the secondary transmission path is a multi-faceted reflector. The reflector is displaced sufficiently from the output end of the secondary transmission path so that the power density of the radiation incident thereon is reduced sufficiently so as to not damage the facets thereof. The coupling system is contained within a heat sink which receives the reflected and lost radiant energy harmlessly converting same to heat.

  • Patent number: 5177344
Abstract: A randomly varying modulated current is generated and used to drive a magnetic write head in an apparatus for enhancing a randomly varying magnetic security characteristic of a medium. The write head can be positioned adjacent a fluid magnetic slurry for the purpose of altering the location of the various magnetic particles therein in a random fashion. The slurry can then be hardened thermally or using ultraviolet dryers. A circuit which can generate the randomly variable current for the read head includes a modulator which receives a first randomly variable signal and a second, different randomly varying signal which modulates the first signal.

  • Patent number: 5176293
Abstract: A douche or enema dispenser is provided as a unitary hermetically sealed container and a cooperating overcap. The container has a cap structure which is removable by torsion applied through the overcap positioned over the cap structure, engageable with the adjacent container neck portion, and simultaneously rotatable as well as axially movable relative thereto. As the overcap is rotated relative to the neck portion, ribs in the overcap engage tip portions of a wing member associated with the cap structure. Since the cap structure is mounted over and sealed about a frangible web located around the container mouth that is located at the distal end of the neck portion, when sufficient torsion develops, the web is fractured, the cap is removed, and the container is opened. In opening the container, force upon walls of the liquid-filled body portion of the container is minimized.

A swing tower is connected about a lower pivot axis to a lower end of the boom and allows for lateral swinging movement of the boom. The swing tower allows for overcenter movement of the boom to opposite sides of an upper pivot axis on the swing tower whereat one end of the boom actuator is secured. The boom structure has a curved configuration at its lower end to accommodate nesting of the boom actuator while maintaining torsional rigidity for the boom.

  • Patent number: 5176574
Abstract: A combine cleaning system including a fan and a cleaning sieve which coact with each other to separate chaff and unthreshed tailings from grain. The sieve defines a grain cleaning area comprised of an air foil section extending rearwardly from a forward edge of the sieve and a slat or louvered section downstream of the air foil section. The air foil section provides a first level of cleaning to the threshed materials deposited on the grain cleaning area while the slat section provides a second level of cleaning to the material received thereon. Preferably, the air foil section comprises about 60% to about 85% of the grain cleaning area.

  • Patent number: 5171053
Abstract: There is disclosed a lifting device particularly suited for lifting plastic drums or barrels while maintaining the same vertically upright and transporting the same to another location. The lifting device is unique in that it employs a locking bar which is capable of locking the device in both the open position preparatory for securing the barrel, and the grasping/lifting position. It maintains either of these locked positions regardless of whether an upward force is exerted upon the pair of pivotal tongs. Unlike other pivoted lifting devices or tongs, the present invention uses a minimal amount of friction force to lift a barrel, such that the fragile resilient sides of a plastic barrel are not damaged.

  • Patent number: 5172096
Abstract: A system and method for establishing an alarm threshold for each member of a plurality of detectors or sensors includes storing a value returned from each detector indicative of a clear air condition. A second value returned from each detector indicative of a test condition is stored. The stored values are combined with a common detector characteristic value to produce a unique alarm theshold for each detector. The determined alarm thresholds can be stored for subsequent use. Subsequently, a value returned from a detector indicating a current ambient condition can be compared to that detector's previously determined alarm threshold. If the currently returned value from the detector exceeds the predetermined alarm threshold, an alarm condition can be indicated.

  • Patent number: 5171237
Abstract: An absorbent mixture, as made from fibers formed into a fibrous web and a polymerizable, cross-linkable material, in a liquid carrier. The material, when polymerized and cross-linked, results in a superabsorbent polymer. The material, in the liquid carrier, is dispersed within the fibrous web, as dispersed inclusions, and is polymerized and cross-linked in situ, within the fibrous web, so as to form a composite web comprising the fibrous web and the superabsorbent polymer, as dispersed particles, at least some of which are bound to fibers from the fibrous web. The composite web is ground, so as to cause some of the superabsorbent polymers to become particulate while fragments of the superabsorbent polymer remain bound to fibers from the fibrous web. Before the composite web is ground, it may be provided with a fibrous layer or fibrous layers in intimate contact therewith, and also compressed.
