Abstract: Soft jaws in a powered rotary chuck of a lathe are fixedly secured in position, during shaping of the jaws to fit a piece of work, by an annular boring fixture. The fixture is located concentric with the center of rotation of the chuck. The fixture has three sets of multiple spaced threaded openings. Each set is oriented in a like spiral relative to the center of rotation. Three bolts with threaded shanks are engaged in three of the openings. The bolts have heads fitting in counterbores in the jaws. The jaws are tightened on the heads of the bolts so that the jaws can then be shaped to the pertinent dimensions of the piece of work, then the fixture can be removed, then the piece of work can be put in the jaws, and then operations can be performed on the piece of work as it is being rotated by the chuck. Bolts of different diameter heads can be used to help orient the bolts to the locations of the counterbores.
Abstract: A swimming pool is treated by a mixture of sodium carbonate and cyanuric acid or sodium carbonate alone added in the form of a compacted tablet. The tablet is placed in a leaf skimmer or in a bypass cartridge connected to a swimming pool recirculation pump parallel to a pool filter. The tablet is formed by depositing a mixture of sodium carbonate and water in a vessel and by applying pressure to the mixture.
Abstract: Method and means to change the sound emitted from a metal "wood" golf club head by providing a first foward chamber in the head opening to the club head face, by providing a resilient face plate covering the first forward chamber and vibrating at a given primary frequency upon impact with a golf ball, and by providing a second rear chamber in the head disposed rearwardly of the first chamber and connected thereto by a throat whereby the second chamber and the throat have the function of a Helmholtz resonator modifying the sound propagated in the first forward chamber upon impact with a golf ball. The first and second chambers can be filled by a gas (such as air), a liquid, or a solid.
Abstract: A press, in an automotive service facility to extract oil from a used automotive oil filter, mounted by brackets on a waste disposal band over an opening in the top of the barrel. An access door to the press having a cam acting on a press control knob to prevent operation of the press when the door is open. A hydraulic cylinder in the press and a plate under the cylinder and oil filters being deposited on the plate and being pressed to extract oil by the hydraulic cylinder lifting the plate against the bottom of the cylinder. The press being powered by low pressure air in the service facility which is converted to high pressure hydraulic pressure by a multiple stroke pumping system that includes a larger diameter air piston, in an air cylinder, attached to a smaller diameter hydraulic piston. An on-off control shaft manually shifted by manual operation of the press control knob.
Abstract: A grease pressurizing hubcap for a wheel hub including a barrel press fit in the hub. A plastic piston disposed in the barrel and movable between inner and outer annular abutments in the barrel, the outer abutment being formed by an inward turned, reverse bent flange and the inner abutment being formed by a polygon-shaped split ring set in an annular groove in the interior of the barrel. A compression spring acting between the piston and the outer annular abutment normally pressing the piston to an inner position. A lubricating fitting set in the piston to fill the barrel on the inner side of the piston and to act against the compression spring to pressurize grease in the hub. A colored annular outer flange on the piston withdrawn into the barrel in the absence of pressurized grease and extending outwardly from the barrel in the presence of pressurized grease to visually indicate the grease pressure level conditions in the hub.
Abstract: An actuator/coupler having concealed rollers between forward coupler attaching to the towing vehicle and rear housing connected to trailer. Forward rollers bear on the underside of the top wall of the rear housing. The rear rollers bear on the underside of the top wall of the coupler. A hydraulic cylinder block is counterbored and the rear rollers have annular extensions fitting into the counterbores for roller support during assembly. Rests are provided under front rollers for roller support during assembly. A piston rod in the hydraulic cylinder extending forwardly through a pivotal latching wall having a clutching opening normally only letting the piston rod move rearwardly and locking against forward movement and a spring pressing the latching wall to locking position.
Abstract: End plastic connectors on the ends of two construction members like concrete forms. Each connector has a pair of bosses on opposite corners and a pair of openings in opposite corners so that the bosses on one connector mate with the openings in the other connector. Each boss has an annular rib sized to press through the associated opening, which is circular with a pair of flats, to latch the connectors together. Each rib is spaced from the remainder of the associated connector a greater distance than the thickness of the material of the connectors around the openings thereby permitting limited angular adjustment in orientation between connectors. Each construction member is a piece of dimensional lumber in one form of the invention, to which the end connectors are attached by nailing. In the other form of the invention, each construction member is a plastic extrusion and the end connectors have protrusions interfitting into the plastic extrusion.
