  • Patent number: 4189300
Abstract: A burner and associated rotating drum dryer for drying loose material, such as aggregates, is provided in which the burner directs a flame into the middle of the dryer drum, which has flights therein which lift the loose material in the rotating drum and drop it to either side of the center of the flame while preventing its falling through the center. A plurality of flights are mounted around the drum and each captures loose material as it passes through the loose material on the bottom of the drum and drops the material in a pattern in the drum for more rapid drying of the material. The material is spread through the open space of the drum except for that portion in the middle of the flame so as not to interfere with complete combustion.

  • Patent number: 4188295
Abstract: A chlorinator and filter for treating water during the filling of a swimming pool includes a hollow cylindrical tube and a first cap member over one end of the tube, with an opening therein. A nozzle cooperates with the cap member and extends through the opening for directing a stream of water axially through the tube. A second cap member is included over the other end of the tube, with an outlet extending substantially transverse to the access of the tube. A generally cylindrical stick of chlorine is positioned in the tube, the stick being supported by the second cap member against the flow of water from the nozzle. The stick has an outer diameter slightly smaller than the inner diameter of the tube, such that a substantial surface area of the stick is present for erosion at a relatively high rate, caused by a relatively high water pressure with respect to the pressure of the nozzle.

  • Patent number: 4179867
Abstract: A packaging machine for fabricating individual bag-like containers from a continuous web of polyethylene or like material comprising a frame having a substantially elongated configuration on which is mounted a plurality of work stations at least partially defining a flow path along which the web travels as it is being fabricated. A web carrier means in the form of one or more carrier belts supportingly engages said web by finger means to penetrate a predetermined portion of the web by virtue of the finger means being oriented to extend outwardly relative to the interior of the web. A drive assembly is interconnected in driving relation to the carrier means and serves to feed the web along said flow path and to a fill assembly whereby the web material passes into and out of said fill assembly in a predetermined manner to allow for an open orientation or configuration at the fill station to permit filling.

  • Patent number: 4177542
Abstract: A handhold for a twisted strand rope comprising an elongated body of a length sufficiently long to span the palm of the hand of a user and of a circumference sufficient to be firmly grasped by the user's hand when the hand is closed. The outer surface of the body has a plurality of notches or grooves uniformly spaced therearound and at least equal in number to the number of strands in the rope, these notches or grooves being disposed at both ends and/or longitudinally of the body for individually holding a strand of the rope. A length of a rope equal to the length of the body is untwisted to separate the strands thereof so that the body can be inserted between the strands and each strand inserted or nested in a longitudinal groove or a corresponding pair of notches at opposite ends of the body. The body is retained within the rope by the natural tendency of the rope strands to assume their twisted orientation.

  • Patent number: 4178548
Abstract: This invention relates to a method and apparatus for operating a mobile communications transmitter/receiver type radio from a motorcycle or in another high ambient noise environment. A contact vibration transducer is provided for being coupled to the throat area of the communicator for generating a transmit audio signal responsive to the vibrations of the vocal cords talking. The transmit audio signal is then coupled to a modulator section of the communications transmitter for modulating the transmitter output. A voice operated relay is provided for switching the transmitter/receiver into and out of the transmit mode responsive to receiving the transmit audio signal from the contact vibration transducer. In this manner the transmit audio signal and the transmit/receive switching will be relatively impervious to the high ambient noise levels surrounding the communicator.

  • Patent number: 4173929
Abstract: An anti-fold apparatus for high speed printers to prevent the folding or creasing of a printer ribbon riding over rollers. The rollers each have spiral angular serrations thereon, and are mounted in two pairs with each roller in a pair having one end abutting the end of the other, and each being mounted at an angle to the elongated center axis of the other, so that a printer ribbon rolling thereon is directed away from the abutting ends of each pair of rollers to prevent creasing therein. A linkage connects the two pairs of rollers at their abutting ends for shifting the angular position of each pair simultaneously between first slanted positions, when the ribbon is moving in one direction, and second slanted positions, when the ribbon is moving in the reverse direction. The linkage is actuated by solenoids, actuated by the reversing of the ribbon.

  • Patent number: 4169602
Abstract: A prefabricated bowling lane is fabricated in modules at a manufacturing facility. Each lane module includes a base, a panel formed from a plurality of laminated hardwood strips joined side to side and securing means for attaching the lane module to the existing lane support structure of a bowling alley. The panel formed from laminated hardwood strips is bonded to the upper surface of the base. The width of each panel is greater than the width of its base in order to form a female notch along each side of the lane section for securing one side of each adjacent gutter to the lane section. The approach modules of the present invention are constructed in a manner very similar to the lane modules except that the sides of each approach module include both first and second female notches for receiving specially configured approach fill means which span the approach area between adjacent bowling lanes. The approach fill means includes premanufactured wooden subassemblies which are readily installed.
