  • Patent number: 6032677
Abstract: A technique to enhance the stability of dental and orthopedic implants (including artificial joints and fractures) by inducing implant micromotion via a permanent magnet coupled to the implant which is vibrated using a cyclic magnetic force to enhance growth and apposition of the surrounding bone. In the preferred embodiment the implant temporarily holds a rigidly fixed, permanent magnet that is oscillated by an externally applied, time varying moving magnetic field of controlled frequency and intensity. Movement of the internal magnet transmits movement to the implant and effects stimulation of the implant-bone interface.

  • Patent number: 5977729
Abstract: An electrochemical radial cell engine comprising an engine block, a motor supported by the engine block, at least one electrochemical reaction cell including a rotatable enclosure containing a source of anode material, preferably in the form of a multiplicity of anode particles, a fluid electrolyte, a cathode surrounding and radially spaced from the rotatable enclosure and means for rotating the rotatable enclosure in response to rotation of the motor. The enclosure should preferably be represented by a perforated cage having a mesh size large enough to pass fluid electrolyte. Rotation of the cage causes the anode particles to be compressed by centripetal forces which act upon the particles as the cage spins. This maximizes the operating efficiency of the electrochemical reaction cell(s) providing enhanced power for driving the engine.

  • Patent number: 5757273
Abstract: The multifunctional personal alert safety system of the present invention includes a portable safety monitoring device which is removably coupled for independent operation to an external self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) containing a source of pressurized air. The portable safety monitoring device comprises a motion sensor unit, an alarm and a control having an activated position and a deactivated position. In addition the system includes a pressure switch which is responsive to the flow of pressurized air from said self contained breathing apparatus above a predetermined minimum level for causing the control to activate putting the motion sensor unit and alarm in an operational mode. Once in an operational mode the motion sensor and alarm remain operational independent of further operation of the pressure switch. A manual switch is also included for operating the portable monitoring safety device independent of the self contained breathing apparatus when the control is deactivated.

  • Patent number: 5593305
Abstract: A moldable dental composition including high-fusing temperature metal particles and a binder comprising wax preferably in a concentration of above at least twenty percent (20%) of the composition. The high-fusing temperature metal particles should have an irregular nonspherical geometry and a thin cross-sectional average thickness. The moldable dental composition may also contain low fusing temperature metal particles for enhanced wetting of the high fusing metal particles during heat treatment at a heat treatment temperature which will substantially melt the low fusing metal particles. However it is not essential to the subject invention for the composition to contain low fusing metal particles.

  • Patent number: 5562002
Abstract: A piston flow meter for measuring the flow of a gaseous fluid, such as ambient air, through the flow meter by timing the displacement of a piston in a hollow precision bore flowtube over a fixed distance. The piston is reciprocated from opposite ends of the flowtube by a poppet valve which controls the direction of movement of the piston in the flowtube. Ambient air is drawn into the flow tube from the atmosphere by an external pump connected to an inlet at one end of the flowtube. The flow meter includes a damping assembly for damping pulsations in gas flow through said flowtube with the damping assembly preferably located adjacent the pump inlet to the external pump. The damping assembly comprises damping means which includes a porous member and at least one elastic diaphragm contiguous thereto with the porous member having a multiplicity of voids and a plurality of open channels extending through the porous member to the elastic diaphragm.
