  • Patent number: 6238121
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for forming a friction-welded joint between a first (10) and a second (50) metallic component, in particular a friction-welded joint between a function-welding stud and a metal plate, wherein a guide element (1) of the first component (10) is introduced into a positioning bore (53) extending substantially perpendicularly to a surface (55) of the second component (50) until a welding face (2) of the first component (10) comes into contact with the surface (55) round the positioning bore (53) and wherein the two components (10; 50) are rotated relative to one another round an axis of rotation in the longitudinal direction of the guide element (1) such that an annular joint region is produced between the two components (10; 50). The invention also relates to a metallic fastening member (10) for forming such a friction-welded joint. The positioning bore (53) and the guide element (1) allow a friction-welded joint to be formed exactly at a predetermined point.

  • Patent number: 6238503
Abstract: To provide an ultrasonic welding apparatus of a simple structure which allows a plastic fastener to be automatically loaded into an ultrasonic horn, and to provide an ultrasonic welding method of high operational efficiency. An ultrasonic welding apparatus 1 includes an ultrasonic horn 3 holding a plastic stud 7 having a flange 5 and an engagement shank 6, and a body 2 to bring the flange of the stud 7 held by the ultrasonic horn into contact with a workpiece, so that the flange 5 is ultrasonic-welded onto the workpiece. The ultrasonic welding apparatus further includes a stud receiving member 10 to receive the plastic stud 7 in the manner that the flange is advanced ahead from a feeding tube 9; and a moving mechanism (a first arm 19, a first arm cylinder 21, a second arm 23, a second arm cylinder 25, and the like) to move the stud receiving member 10 to a position below the ultrasonic horn 3.

  • Patent number: 6233792
Abstract: A bumper holding clip for fastening an attachment member onto a workpiece, in which the clip includes a base, a holding portion and a fixing portion. The holding portion is formed on one of the surfaces of the base for receiving and holding a supporting portion of the attachment member, such as a bumper. The holding portion has a receiving portion for receiving the supporting portion of the attachment member. The receiving portion is formed on one side of a wall, on which the opposite side has affixed thereto a centrally located resilient holding member that engages the supporting portion of the attachment member from slipping out of the holding portion. The wall is rigid at its opposite corners to immovably support the supporting portion of the attachment member within the receiving portion. The receiving portion is a bag-like insertion groove that has an elongated cross section to receive a plate-like supporting portion of the attachment member.

  • Patent number: 6224310
Abstract: A self-plugging blind rivet for securing together apertured members comprises a tubular shell (11) having a tail end fact (16) at one end, a pre-formed radially enlarged head (13) at the other end, and a stem which extends through the shell and has a stem head (22) adjacent the tail end fact (16) of the shell. The region adjacent the stem head (22) is of increased diameter relative to the rest of the stem shank and has a plurality of axial depressions (26) formed therein, the corresponding region of the shell being arranged to fill the axial depressions (16) in the stem and being harder than the material of the shell (11) in a region adjacent the radially enlarged head (13). In use and under axial compression leading of the shell (11), the shell (11) buckles in the region adjacent the member remote from the performed head to form a blind head in contact with said member so as to clamp together the apertured members.

  • Patent number: 6215085
Abstract: Stud welding device with an axially displaceable adjusting element (3, 17) for displacement from a front position into a rear position and back, in which a magnetic field and a coil (15) interact in such a way that, when the coil (15) is connected to a controllable current source (41) an axial force is produced in order to displace the adjusting element (3, 17), the movement of which is transmitted to a stud holder (2), characterized in that the coil (15) is rigidly arranged on a hollow body (14) which is connected to the adjusting element (3, 17) and is arranged axially movably in an air gap (13) between a magnetizable core (8) and a magnetizable sheath (10), the magnetic field being conveyed via at least one yoke (9) connecting the core (8) and the sheath (10) while passing radially through the coil (15), the coil exerting on the adjusting element (3, 17) an axial force acting only in one direction as a function of the direction of current during current control.

  • Patent number: 6205625
Abstract: A weld stud comprises a leg portion having a root that is adapted to be welded to a workpiece and a resilient engagement pawl portion integrally formed at least on one side of the leg portion. The resilient engagement pawl portion extends diagonally outwardly from the end of the leg portion toward the root and is capable of bending radially inwardly with respect to the leg portion. On the outside of a lower end portion of the leg portion, an engagement step which is an inward recess formed like a step is provided. Although it is not always necessary to make the weld stud from synthetic resin, it is preferable that the entire weld stud is made of synthetic resin and is molded as a one-piece article since its use is predominantly for synthetic resin members.
